I moved to the Southern California desert directly from Manhattan, New York City, where I resided for 28 years.
I've owned a floral and event production company for 37 years, bringing it to Palm Springs in late 1999. My instant love of the desert compelled me to create my own oasis in the heart of the historic Movie Colony. I've spent the last 13 years acquiring and cultivating exotic flora to complete the illusion, and brought to this property all the antique treasures I've found in my travels. The overall effect is that of a comfortable, elegant home, that certainly doesn't look like a hotel.
David Madison purchased this cottage in 2000
Location, location, location everyone says. This place has charm, privacy, comfort and drop dead mountain views, just minutes from the heart of Palm Springs life. Stay home by the pool, or walk your dog one block away at dog-friendly Ruth Hardy Park which includes public tennis courts and loads of grass and paved walkways. Just a couple of blocks away is the famous Movie Colony where you can walk or drive among some of the most beautiful streets and estates in town.
Palm Springs is all about outdoor living and the large garden with pool, spa, grill, chaises dining table, and landscape lighting will let you enjoy the sun or stars with equal ease. Backyard is VERY private!!
Our host, David, could not have been more warm and welcoming and helpful--he was just great! His home was exceptionally comfortable--the beds and furnishings were super, the kitchen was very well equipped (all the great appliances, cooking gear, plates and glasses, etc. you would ever want), the main master suite was huge and included a very large dressing room and beautiful master bath, the outdoor spa/hot tub and gas grill were excellent, but most of all the enormous and spectacular back patio with it's superb and unobstructed view of the mountains, large table and chairs, chaise lounges by the great kidney-shaped pool, all under the warm sun were the perfect way to experience Palm Springs.
I made the right choice! This is a lovely home, beautifully decorated, warm ‘n inviting, well stocked and ideally located; so you can put your bags down and start your vacation as soon as you walk in! The home has two Master Suites which makes it a great place for two couples. The bedrooms (and whole house) have beautiful pieces of unique furniture, comfortable beds w/ nice linens and are on opposite sides of the house so everyone has a little privacy. The kitchen has everything you would need, very well stocked with nice modern appliances as well as some of those basics one would need in a kitchen like spices/oils etc. The house flows out to a private and beautifully landscaped yard with a lovely view of the mountains, perfect backdrop to a day by the pool, or an evening cocktail. The pool area has several nice lounge chairs and fluffy pool towels as well as a beautiful large glass table and chairs for early morning breakfast or candle light dinner. This home is perfectly located, easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping and it’s just down the street from Ruth Hardy Park. I personally really liked that this home was pet friendly, but other than a small doggy door, you would never know an animal had ever been in the home – the home is very clean. This home does not feel like a rental at all, it feels like you’ve walked into a buddies’ house – this was the nicest rental I have reserved, and priced well especially for what you get. I felt this place checked all the boxes. If you are looking for a beautiful home w/ a private pool, perfect yard, I highly recommend this home! Thank you David for opening your home to me.
This was a great rental! It was perfect for two couples: private, comfortable, clean and easy to get to. The owner was available to answer questions and was very responsive. Great kitchen, great views, gorgeous grounds. Be sure to check about having the pool heated. There might be an extra charge but it's worth it. Highly recommend!
Perfect little house..Clean and with a great pool! Unfortunately Palm Springs had a cold week when we were there so no sun shine by the pool.
The location is great and an easy walk to Ruth Hardy park with the furry ones. David, the owner is charming! His recommendations for restaurants were spot on. We tried to get to them all and were disappointed in none.
I would not consider staying anywhere else when we return to Palm Springs!
I rented David's house for a birthday weekend for my wife and best friend (from out of state) whose birthdays are about 2 months apart; my wife's being one week prior to the trip. With hectic busy lives (two kids, sports, music, dual careers) my singular goal was to "get away from it all" and relax. I wanted us to feel like we had nothing to do, no where to be, and no one demanding our time or attention, or making a bunch of noise. And boy let me tell you, did David deliver!! To start off, David was more than accommodating with a request for an early check-in because we only live an hour away and wanted to get started with vacation time as soon as we dropped the kids at school on Friday. This house is nothing short of unbelievable! David's property is immaculately kept and he obviously spared nothing on attention to detail. From the warming oven in the kitchen, to the tranquility of the hot tub, the privacy and calm of the back yard and swimming pool, and a hint of sexiness with some proactive art work and a master bathroom/closet to die for!! Seriously, David, the rainfall shower with a sliding glass door out to the pool instead of a wall?! Genius! Sexy! Anyway, the three of us had an escape to bliss without a care in the world. We have not stopped talking about how wonderful our experience was, and wondering when we can return. I will definitely be working on figuring out a way to stay at David's again in the near future.
We had one thing that was a matter of personal preference, and not even an issue where any kind of negative comment or remark is necessary. Personally, we prefer softer mattresses. If you prefer more of a firm mattress you'll be in heaven. Again, strictly personal preference, and not at all meant to be taken as a negative remark in any way. Class act, David! Well done.
This is a great house. First, the interior is ideally designed, with two master suites separated by the main living area. It is very nicely furnished, showing David's great eye (he is a florist by trade). Second, it is located very close to town. Many of the North Palm Canyon restaurants are walkable (well, maybe not in dead summer--but close). Everything you want to see in Palm Springs is accessible. You are also almost next door to Ruth Hardy Park. Third, the house and the pool are completely private. Completely. No overhead wires but plenty of hummingbirds. A lovely garden. A great pool. Really, if you are looking for proximity, style, and privacy, you could not do better.
David is also the ideal host. He made arrangements to meet me and show me how things work. He was attentive during my stay without being in anyway obtrusive. And everything worked fine--the kitchen is very well equipped, the house is spotless, and the pool is perfect.
Just minutes from the historic Riviera Hotel and Spa,The Palm Springs Tramway, (where you can see the mountains from a different perspective), the Palm Springs Convention Center, The Aqua Caliente Casino and Spa, North Palm Canyon Drive with great shopping, antiquing, restaurants, and art galleries, but nestled in a quiet area perfect to take advantage of all the activities, or just get away from it all in a secluded, totally walled private oasis.
