About Daniel Potaracke

Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012

Why Daniel Potaracke chose Hamakua Coast

We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.

Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.

What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.

The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

What makes this house unique

From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.

Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

Beautiful, Romantic Getaway at the Mango House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Mango House for 3 wonderful weeks. It is the perfect place to venture out to the rest of the island from and a welcome retreat at the end of the day. We enjoyed talking with Daniel as he spent his days working to beautify the surrounding landscape and was a good source of information on the islands activities and points of interest. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you Joy for your kind words, I really appreciate them. Hearing them makes it worthwhile for the work I put into keeping the grounds nice for the guests. Trying to help my guests with information and things that are going on, is just part of trying to keep my guests happy. ...and if they are happy, I'm happy. I'm glad you liked the orchids that grow around the property as well as all the other flowering plants. It isn't always like that as they go through cycles but, I try to make up for that with interesting nonflowering plants. Mahalo and hope to see you again!

A Perfect Retreat in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th stay here! Our first stay was with our son and daughter-in-law and our last stay was with our teenage granddaughter. They stayed in the nice cottage behind the main house. It has a large bedroom and bathroom that is so inviting with the tropical décor, and hardwood floors. We stay in the Main house that is always neat and clean with the tropical vibe, too! We love to sit on the lanai that wraps around the house in the mornings, drink our coffee, and eat the fruit grown right there! It is so private! You don't see any neighbors, but enjoy the lovely, landscaped yard, and Hawaiian wildlife as well as the gorgeous view of the ocean! Daniel has everything there you need: washer and dryer, barbeque, beach gear, and more!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for a great review. I very much enjoy hearing that my guests have such a great time especially when they are repeat guests like yourself. Providing fresh fruits that are in season for guests gives me lots of joy myself. Having oranges, limes and bananas growing on the property is great for myself and especially guests. It is a great way to say ALOHA and WELCOME to people and I appreciate that myself. I'm glad that you like the full size washer and dryer that is new this past year. The old apartment size combo just didn't work out. Buying a new refrigerator and stove was a something that we needed to do to upgrade the Mango House, as well. Hardly worth mentioning but, we put a slow cooker in the Mango House for guests who want to "run all day" and come back to a cooked dinner waiting for them. Again, thank you very much for the great review. It makes it all seem worthwhile when I see them....and you again. Mahalo Daniel

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We were so happy we were able to spend 2 weeks at Mango House. The setting was amazing, I felt like we were in our own little botanical garden. I know it requires a lot of work, so thank you Daniel! The house has everything you need and more, very comfortable. Having a washer and dryer is a real bonus. We loved the privacy and quiet. Of course having fresh fruit everyday from the property was great. We were able to explore the whole island so thought the location was perfect.

Can't thank our hosts enough for their hospitality!

Hope to come back someday to this little bit of paradise!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for another great review. I'm happy that you enjoyed the grounds and plantings around the Mango House and yes, it is some work for sure. I enjoy keeping the grounds as beautiful as possible with the palms, ti, gardenia, orange/lime trees, orchids and all the flowers that make up the property. Providing guests what fruit is available and in season from the property is something I enjoy doing to make guests feel welcome and happy. After all, that is what VRBO is all about.

Amazed by the beauty and charm of the whole area! The Mango house was a wonderful slice of Hawaii and it had every comfort any traveler would ever need. The views were breath taking and we were located in such a great area for seeing everything we wanted! May I suggest sunset on the point as an evening treat! Proprietors of the Mango house are warm and gracious .Great experience!

Owner's Response: Thank You for your nice review; I do appreciate it very much. I do try to make sure the Mango House is supplied with whatever my guests need by putting myself in their place and what they may need with new or newer appliances and enough dinnerware etc that they need. I will be replacing the microwave soon with an over the stove type and adding slow cooker and a few other things at the Mango House for guests. Again, my thanks.

Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.

Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.

One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.

We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.

This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.

We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.

The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.

The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.

A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.

Notes:
The covered lanai is a great place to sit at the outdoor furniture while grilling or having morning coffee or that glass of wine later on. Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. This is place you can stay at all day/week or use as a base for sightseeing, swimming, biking, golfing or many other things to do on the Big Island.
