Two separate little houses with full bedroom and full bath.
About Daniel Potaracke
Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.
Daniel Potaracke purchased this House in 2012
Why Daniel Potaracke chose Laupāhoehoe
We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property. Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself. What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do. The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.
What makes this House unique
From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting. Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.

Loved it here
Mango House exceeded our expectations. There were several days we didn't even leave the place; we just enjoyed the tropical gardens, the ocean view from the lanai (the photos don't do it justice) and made our own meals in the well-stocked kitchen and on the Weber charcoal grill. The place was clean and airy, the wifi and tv worked fine, Daniel was pleasant and responsive. For part of our stay another couple joined us, and the second bed and bath was very nice and clean and it worked out well. We would love to come back, the sooner the better.
Thank you very much for your great review Doug! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay enough so that you didn't even leave some days. Having the separate building with a bedroom and bathroom makes for their own privacy and yours in the main building. You are always welcome to come back for sure.
Perfect for two couples, with the privacy of a separate bedroom.
Absolutely wonderful with great art work, comfortable beds and linens, well furnished lanai for morning coffee with ocean views.
Lush gardens invite such peace and calm. This is a definite winner and we will be back.
The Mango House, a magnificent little hideaway is truly a beautiful gem to spend a most relaxing vacation. The location was perfect for enjoying the local Papaaloa Country Store with all its amenities to exploring Hilo side. During our stay, Mango House felt like home, which we appreciated. Thank you Daniel for the honor to stay in your perfect home!!
Thank you for your kind review! I really appreciate your great review and am very happy that you enjoyed your time and stay at the Mango House. You are more than welcome to come back and stay!
Mango house was everything I hoped for. Quiet and peaceful and surrounded by beauty that took my breath away. It's ~30-45 minutes drive to Hilo where we snorkeled and saw sea turtles and had a lovely time shopping at the Farmer's Market. There's a great little shop and restaurant just down the road (Papaaloa Country Store and Cafe, ~5 minutes drive) and a beautiful beach park that's a bit too rough for swimming but perfect for watching the waves crash.
I spent a lot of time in the living room gazing out the many windows at the view -- jungly plants and fruit trees and a train of geckos. At one point a mongoose wandered by. Despite being on the rainy side of the island the weather was spectacular, with occasional showers but also entire days of sun and blue skies. It was hot, and the air conditioning really came in handy.
Daniel lives next door and keeps the garden trim. He was friendly, as were other neighbors we met. There are lovely walks through the neighborhood up to the forest of tall trees or visiting local cows. The sheer variety of fruit trees amazed me.
Thank you Sarah for your great review! I truly enjoyed hosting you and your friend, Natasha. I think I'll be seeing her again as she said this was the first time she has had air conditioning at a vacation rental. I'm glad you enjoyed the secluded location but easy drive to most everywhere else. I know you enjoyed having the fresh fruits available such as the star fruit I gave you. Limes and lemons are ripe now as is rambutan; I really enjoy sharing with my guests. I've even had guests help with harvesting bananas ...I get a kick out that as it gives them a memory of staying at the Mango House. Thanks again Sarah. Hope to see you in the future.
The mango house
This house is like paradise. The house is very beautiful and the garden is fabulous. Daniel is very kind and considerate. We really enjoyed our stay there. The house is close enough to everything but feels secluded and very private.
Thank you Linda for your kind review. It's always a pleasure to host guests like you and your sister. I'm glad you liked the house(s) and the garden area as it is always something to improve on and glad when guests point out anything like a coffee maker that isn't working or burned out light bulbs etc. You are most welcome to come back anytime to my secluded guest house.
Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.
Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.
One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.
We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.
This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.
This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.
This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.
We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.
The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.
The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.
The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.
A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.
We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
