About Daniel Potaracke
Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.
Daniel Potaracke purchased this House in 2012
Why Daniel Potaracke chose Laupāhoehoe
We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property. Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself. What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do. The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.
What makes this House unique
From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting. Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.

Beautiful and comfortable home (2 buildings) high above ocean with breathtaking garden. Peaceful and interesting environment with a lovely walk up to a eucalyptus forrest. Great place for exploring the Hamakua Coast. Daniel is a helpful owner who cares meticulously for the house and offers suggestions about the area. We hope to return for a longer stay next year!
Truly a tropical paradise
This is a lovely, secluded property 30 miles north of Hilo, Hawaii. It is best considered a retreat from the bustle and touristy character of Kona. Not close to the beach--however, slightly less than an hour's drive north and you will discover some of the best island beaches, perhaps--the top beaches in the world. Hapuna beach (huge parking facilities) and Mana Kea (get there before 8 a.m. since very limited public parking is available) have always been our go to beaches. The lovely town of Waimea is 30 miles north of the Laupahoehoe property. We really enjoy this town, made popular by the famous Parker Ranch. Recently we visited Tropical Dreams Ice Cream Dairy located in Waimea--what a wonderful find. This was our ninth time to Hawaii and we have stayed at this or adjacent rental properties every time. We love the ability to travel to many island adventure spots and then return for a day of relaxation and respite, cooking ahi tuna on the Weber and eating our dinner with a glass of wine on the beautiful lanai, taking in all of the wonderful scenery and ocean views. Geckos are residents in the house, so don't be surprised to see one peeking out from behind a ceiling beam or speeding up the wall or window. They are really fun! In addition, be warned--the kukio frogs, imported several years ago to counter the mosquito population, are ever present at night. It's a good idea to bring silicone ear plugs; otherwise, your sleep may be seriously hindered. All in all, this is the property we always return to because it offers the best retreat with very comfortable amenities at a very reasonable price! The owner has done a fantastic job!
We spent a week at Mango House during our first visit to Hawaii. We were enchanted with the property and so sad to leave! The grounds were beautifully landscaped and we were able to enjoy fresh fruit picked from the garden every day. The houses are charming and we enjoyed the lanai in the morning while gazing at the ocean and the darkness at night with amazing sounds and stars. The setting is wonderfully private and secluded and still very convenient for exploring the Hamakua coast, Hilo and Volcanoes National Park. Daniel provided lots of information and suggestions for day trips and was available by phone at all times- a perfect host! We'd love to stay there again!
Thank You Barb for your great review! I couldn't have done it better myself! Getting reviews such as yours makes it worthwhile and lets me know that I'm doing a good job with the Mango House and the hospitality that I offer.
I love to be able to offer fresh picked fruits from the property. Having 3 types of oranges for the guests to pick on their own adds to the experience for them. I know how much I like picking and fresh squeezing oranges so I can imagine your doing it as well.
I try to have a hands off approach to my guests although, I will give as much advise as they want depending on what and where they want to go. I do especially like to point out sites like the Botanical Garden or Akaka Falls (especially after a rain) or a local orchid grower, Akatsuka.
The Hamaku Coast is really a great centrally located place to plan your day trips from....either go northerly to Hawi or over to the beach or going southerly to see Volcano National Park and onto South Point.
Thank you for your great review and it was a pleasure meeting you. Having guests like you make it fun for me.
Mango House and its amenities were everything expected and as advertised! The grounds, the fruit, and the owner were exceptional. We most enjoyed meeting our host and his generous supply of fruits. The view is great. Soooo relaxing. You could stay home and just soak in the view and atmosphere. Mahalo
Thank You very much for the kind review! It was great having you as a guest for the week and glad you had a good stay. I know you went places every day and saw so many of the sites on the Big Island and thats a very busy schedule to keep. I'm only too happy to provide the oranges and bananas that are in season. If it makes my guests happy, it makes me happy. Come back anytime!
Incredible property with lush tropical grounds. We were invited to take fruit from the trees - oranges, lemons, mangoes, starfruit, bananas, rambutans, coconuts and avocados - amazing! The house was perfect, extremely clean and well kept. Plenty of nice towels and linens, kitchen had everything we needed, too. Most mornings we sat on the deck and drank coffee and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Because our Dad came along, it was great for him to have his own separate quarters. The sights around Laupahoehoe are easily accessible, waterfalls galore, and Laupahoehoe Point was a favorite. None of us had been to the Big Island, and I would highly recommend it to everyone - so much beauty! We loved staying at Mango House, and would absolutely stay there again. Aloha and mahalo!
Thank you so much for such a great review. ...makes me want to stay too.
I'm more than happy to share whatever fruit is in season with my guests as I know it adds to their experience of Hawaii as well as the Mango House. There's nothing better than picking fresh oranges and having it anytime of the day. It was nice to meet your father and show him around....he was very happy you brought him.
As you pointed out, the Mango House is close to so many sites and things to do but, it's nice to get back and enjoy the quiet of the Mango House. Mahalo for your visit.
My mother and I spent seven days at the Mango House in Laupahoehoe, Hawaii. Mango House was in pristine condition. The view of the ocean was spectacular. The landscaping provided beautiful flowers, and trees. The furnishings were really nice and well maintained. Daniel, the owner, gave us a tour of the property. He explained the native plant life on the property. He also gave ideas of things to see and do on the Island. He provided us with items needed for a fun day at the beach. He brought us fresh fruit from the property for our use. He occasionally checked with us to ensured that our visit was pleasant. We very much enjoyed our stay at the Mango House.
Thank You Sharra for your great review!
I'm glad you were here in season for the oranges, limes, lemons and star fruit...and avocados. ..oh and bananas. I bet you were surprised when you saw the entire stalk of bananas that I had cut close to the Mango House. I really do enjoy being able to provide fresh fruits or have the guest pick the fruit themselves for a better experience.
Glad you liked using the snorkel gear for the beach. I'm only glad to provide them for guests.
Please come back and visit again.
Experience Island living as you never dreamed of. Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths. One house with the kitchen, living and dining area. We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves. This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway. This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant. This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes. We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week. The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches. The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card. The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see. A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask. We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
