An adorable apartment

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect right from the beginning. The directions were emailed to us and easily explained. When we arrived, we thought it looked like an adorable house. The neighborhood is very charming. The apartment was extremely clean and the air conditioner was already on as it was a hot day. Loved that. There were extras like coffee in the cupboard and make-up remover in the bathroom. It was a pleasant and homey place to come to after a long day. If we had neighbors upstairs, we certainly couldn't hear them.

Good Location

  • 4 of 5

We really liked the location of the Plum Street property. The apartment was very clean inside and had a good supply of high quality towels in the bathroom, which was good. The kitchen and bathroom have been nicely remodeled. A couple of things to be aware of - this apartment is on the first floor, so you can hear people in the apartment above walking around. It was nice to be able to do laundry while we were there, but to get to the laundry room you have to go out the front door, around the back of the house and down some stairs to a room with a dirt floor under the house. It was a bit inconvenient. Also, the two bedrooms share a closet and share a bathroom, and the bathroom is a little awkward to get to if you are in the front bedroom (you have to go through the kitchen). The outside of the house and the yard are a little run down and look like they could use some TLC. Overall it was a good value and great location very close to the CSU campus and Old Town.

Owner's Response: thanks for your comments, we welcome feedback! I guess since we are advertised as a vintage apartment, I am somewhat surprised when folks comment that it wasn't something possibly newer. It seems if one wants to rent a 'newish' property, they wouldn't be looking at vintage apartments. I also can't remember when I haven't stayed somewhere myself and not heard ambient noise from somewhere else in the building. We strive to have a very nice vintage apartment furnished in comfortable current looking furniture. We haven't redone the back yard, which may be why there was a comment on the exterior, but the rest is very nice, nice front yard, large covered porch, brick exterior with fresh trim paint. We strive to have really nice vintage properties and I feel this one is quite nice.

Charming condo

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect weekend get away for four adults! Great location on campus and downtown Fort Collins is only a few miles away. Very clean. Our favorite part was having our morning coffee on the large front porch! Thank you Janet.

Just Right

  • 5 of 5

The property was very clean and had all the essentials we needed. There were only two of us for this stay, but the property could comfortably handle four people, maybe more if young children. The kitchen is spacious and has just enough stuff to prepare meals at home if you like. The bedrooms were good sized and the shared closet is huge. The bathroom has plenty of room and the shower/tub was great.

Unlike some VRBO rentals where you take over the owner's home, this rental seems to be a dedicated rental property. That's not a knock on this property, just an observation that it has the minimal essentials anyone needs. Not that it's bare bones or anything, just not a stay in a property stuffed to the gills with the owner's personal items. It's a remodeled older home. Like any similar remodel not everything was perfect like in new construction. That didn't bother us, sort of adds to the charm.

The location was great with the campus, coffee shops, and restaurants in easy walking distance. You have to park on the street, but the house is on a corner, we never had an issue parking adjacent to the house. We never noticed any street noise, once inside the house things were fairly quiet. It seems the house has three floors. This rental occupies the ground floor, with another unit upstairs, and another unit in the basement. Being on the ground floor was nice with no stairs to deal with, and there is a fenced back yard right off the kitchen if kids need to stretch out. We heard the occasional floor creaking from the upstairs unit, but it certainly wasn't loud or annoying.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments on our vintage rental. We really try to make it a nice experience for someone who wants to stay in Old Town and experience that life style. And you are right, it is not new, so a little quirkiness here and there :). Hope to see you again!

Stay Elsewhere

  • 1 of 5

This is the first negative review I have written after many stays at VRBO properties. First, I question if the property is actually owner operated based on property brochures in the unit. I would say the property is run by a property management owner-operated company that makes minor cosmetic updates to units for quick turnover at minimal upkeep cost. For example, rather than fixing large gaps in the floor boards where utility holes where cut or where the board was too short, they have been left conspicuously unattended which increases the noise transfer and allowed for cold air to rise up from what is likely the basement or crawl space. Concerning noise, we are not talking music or noise from a TV; we could actually hear every daily activity including the microwave oven!

The building is an older structure which would not have been an issue had it not been for the lack of attention to detail. While on the surface the unit seems clean, I was horrified to see the amount of dust and dirt in the shower vent and on the living area overhead light fixture. My husband had to go up and clean the vent before I could even turn it on to take a shower.

The lack of attention to detail extended to things like extra linens, pillows and even towels. How silly of me upon not finding any extras to make a call to the property owner. Her comment back to me was that the 6 towels should be enough as they dry quickly in CO, and they would have too many to wash if they left more. Keep in mind, there are notes left for renters in the unit with somewhat rude comments about taking care of the linens/towels with threats of withholding deposit funds should they be damaged. I've never seen anything like that before at a VRBO property, and it wasn't like the towels were high end quality either.

My last issue is with the management of the financial transaction. The posted policy states it could take up to 30 days for the deposit to be refunded. I have never had anyone hold my deposit until day 30 before now. We arrived on the 15th of the month, today is the 17th of the following month and my deposit has still not been returned.

In summary, we've stayed at 4 other properties in the area all of which have been great. My recommendation is to pass on this property and stay elsewhere.

Owner's Response: Lorene, thanks for your candid review of your stay at our vintage apartment in Old Town. Your feedback is important to us as we strive to make each stay an wonderful one. We are sorry for your experience. To address some of the comments, we are an owner operated apartment. We recently spent a large sum upgrading all of the electrical, adding new panels so we could provide better amenities. We hired an interior designer when we originally prepared the apartment and she made some wonderful color selections, and we did an entire new bathroom at that time which she also designed. We feel we spend more than most upkeeping the property. It is a vintage property, built in the early 1900's, not a brand new facility. We provide a typical amount of towels, l will make more towels available for sure. As for the deposit, it was returned within a day of the rental agreement terms. As an owner, I was sick with the flu for a few days, I do not have a staff, it is just me. We do have quite a few repeat guests and a lot of guests who leave very nice comments in the guest book. I have posted some of them under Owner info. Staying in a vintage property gives one the sense of being back in time, it may not be perfect, but it gives one an experience of being in Old Town.
