Tucked into a gentle hillside, the Little Round House offers a snug nest with full privacy from which to enjoy a magical countryside in the center of 100s of acres of pastoral beauty, in a permanently protected preservation easement, teeming with wildlife, surrounded by peaceful farmlands.
Features include extraordinary hand-crafted floors, walls, ceilings, doors and furnishings of elegant hardwoods and re-cycled chestnut beams from a 19th century barn.
With the Little Round House as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.
A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'
From here you have easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.
After a day of sightseeing, GOLF, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at your Little Round House.
Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under your private gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming fields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.
Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.
Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the deluxe country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.
The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.
For a quiet evening at your Hobbit Hideaway, enjoy a movie or documentary from a collection of Civil War DVDs on an HD TV, which also includes broadcast TV viewing options.
For a quieter evening, curl up next to the toasty Avalon stove with one of the many books of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.
Enjoy WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

We invite you to be our guest for an experience of comfort and learning that you will cherish and will want to share with close friends and family!
The Little Round House was designed and built by Chris Batten, one of Maryland's finest Registered Landscape Architects, on beautiful farmland that has been home and lovingly cared for by his family for 6 generations. He also designed and landscaped the gorgeous and highly rated Vista Country Home, a second vacation rental on the same 100-acre property across the creek, and numerous parks, developments, and residential properties in the area during a 30+ year career in Maryland.
Chris Batten purchased this cottage in 2013
The Little Round House offers a unique experience of romance, privacy, and natural surroudings in a really cool little house you'd expect to see inhabited by hobbits! While private, it is close to towns with all the modern conveniences--restauants, supermarkets, drug stores, pubs... and it is a short drive to some of America's most important historic sites, including Gettysburg, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Antietam, and more. It also offers recreation from great golf courses, wineries, and even a paint ball park for yougsters of all ages!
I'm not usually lost for words, but the Little Round House stole my heart and left me speechless! The owners are amazing, nothing is too much trouble, in fact it felt as though we were visiting with friends. The Little Round House is fully equipped with everything you could possibly want, but for us the stars of the show were the peace and tranquility, spending hours watching the birds feed, relaxing in the evening in 'our' cozy little house, and the lovely owners! It's no surprise that many people return to the Little Round House, and recommend it to friends and family - I know I will certainly be passing forward my good fortune in finding this Little Piece of Heaven! Thank you so much, Chris and Melissa!
The home owners have put in an enormous amount of love, pride and hard work into The Little Round House. The house was above and beyond the listing description. From the fully equipped kitchen, to the comfortable queen bed, to the lovely flower garden, this is the perfect place for an R&R vacation and/or weekend. One of the home owners, Melissa, even went out of her way to bring us a gift of fresh cut flowers from her garden! My husband and I can't say enough good things about it or their owners Chris and Melissa. I highly recommend The Little Round House.
Third year in a row, never disappoints. (Well, it rained this year, but Chris has no control over that.)
We love this place and are almost hesitant to let others in on the great secret of the Catoctin Mountains.
My wife and I cannot praise The Little Round House and its owners highly enough. From start to finish our time there was relaxing, entertaining, and, simply put, perfect. I was fascinated with the architecture of the house and the history held within its walls. Chris made every effort to provide us with a delightful getaway and I will not only be looking forward to my next visit, but emphatically recommending this place to one and all. Chris--thank you so much for sharing this place and creating such a great trip for us!
I can not say enough about The Little Round House or Chris and Melissa. From the time we decided to inquire about renting this house for our trip to checking out they were very attentive. We picked LRH because of the seclusion it had to offer. The description was not off one bit. We rented the house for a week while we were in the area to do some sight seeing. We found it was so centrally located between everywhere we wanted to go. Gettysburg, Washington DC, Antietam, Baltimore, Catoctin Mountain Park and all the little towns we found to explore. The house was well stocked with what we needed which made coming home in the evenings to relax even more enjoyable. We had a choice of grocery stores in town to shop from and Westminster was not far away for a bigger selection. Did I mention the wild life? The bird feeders were continually busy with all types of birds. We also happened to see deer down towards the creek. And of course Indiana (the family dog) stopped by to visit with us a few times. Chris and Melissa made us feel right at home from the beginning. They offered great directions to the places we were looking to visit and a map just in case. We even had a golf cart tour of the property. This property is truly a hidden gem. Thank you Chris and Melissa for your hospitality!!
What a lovely little cabin for a relaxing getaway. The firepit was great! The sunlight pouring in from the windows in the morning and watching the birds made for a relaxing way to start the day. Oh and the bed was soooo comfy! We had a wonderful experience!
