About the property

4 Bedrooms, 4 Full Bathrooms, 2 Half Bathrooms

This relaxing, custom home was built in 1987 and is well equipped with a unique design and amazing ocean view. The house sits on the 6th hole of the Makai Golf Course and yet it is in the heart of the rain forest!

We have seen whales in the late winter through spring on the lanai! The Kilauea Light House (a short drive away) has whale watching as well as incredible bird watching stations!

It is difficult to describe the tranquil beauty and incredible flowers that grace this home! The mountain view from the house is the site of the 'rainiest place on earth' and the rainbows are incredible.

The upstairs king bedroom with sitting area, lanai and soaking tub has views of the mountain, the golf course and the ocean. The next level down features a 'California King' bedroom with a double shower and a lanai.

The living room, dinning room, kitchen and lanai to the outside (where the ocean view is amazing) and 'California King' bedroom are on the main level.

The lower level features two bedrooms, one with a full bed and a bathroom/shower and the other bedroom has two twin beds with a bathroom/tub/shower. This level also has an entertainment area with a flat screen TV, pool table and game table. There are also 2 new double Euro Lounge sleeper/sofas, and 2 twin futons.

The outside hot tub sits on the deck among the tall tree's across from the basement twin bedroom.

**This home has recently been painted (inside and out) with new appliances (including new refrigerator, oven/stove, microwave, washer and dryer and coffee maker) outside furniture, fixtures, screens, landscape improvements and some nice updates. There are two new "Pack and Plays", (one with a "changing table"), highchair, 2 kid booster seats and 2 safety gates as well.**

About Susan Oakley/Property Administrator

This photo is of our '60th' Wedding Anniversary surprise party in Boulder Colorado at a CU football game! We are pictured in the center.

When we built our home in 1986 our grandchildren, Chris (7) and Brianne (5) 'helped' us, and we are now proud great- grandparents! Gary is a retired manufacturer and twin engine Cessna pilot and JoAnn is an artist and dietitian. 'The growing number of great-grand children 'keep us young' and always amazed.'

Susan Oakley/Property Administrator purchased this house in 1987

Why Susan Oakley/Property Administrator chose Princeville

We had the opportunity to purchase the land that overlooks the ocean, has amazing mountain views as well as the fact that the home is located on the 6th hole of the Makai golf course! It is within walking distance of the Princeville Center, and just down the street from the St. Regis Princeville Hotel and beaches. Also the infamous 'Queen's Bath' is right around the corner in this quiet and peaceful neighborhood.

Our home is older, yet very unique with some nice "updates". There are incredible flowers and lush vegetation being in the rain forest. We are next to the golf course, have the ocean view and are in a cozy neighborhood just a few houses from Queen's Bath. We have recently given our home a "new " look with a fresh coat of paint inside and out, new appliances, outdoor furniture, fixtures, screens, and more!

We have noticed that everyone arriving on the island are completely different upon leaving Kauai. When they leave they all have the 'shuffle' and are so relaxed. This is a family friendly home.

What makes this house unique

The design of the house is unique, open and spacious, and the stars at night are amazing! Sitting on the lanai is the best place to watch the amazing and always unique sunsets!

Nice getaway - comfortable with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with a group of 10 ranging from 3 to 63 and we all loved it. Everyone found it to be roomy and comfortable... in fact, nobody wanted to leave! The views were lovely and we found we were right next door to a nice hike down to a pretty cool site - Queen's Bath. Some of us also walked about a mile down to the beach at the St Regis and loved it. It was nice to find some of the essentials in place already - things like toilet paper, spices, sunscreen, towels, etc were all there for us to enjoy so we didn't have to worry about shopping for some of the basics. Ditto for board games and some beach gear (eg, buckets, boogie boards, etc). The kitchen was very nice, with a new fridge and pots/pans/utensils all in good shape. Furniture and beds were all clean and comfortable. The house was clean by everyone's standards - even my mother in law's!

Every place has its downsides. Some of the belongings in the home are quite old (encyclopedias and books from the 1960's, bathroom/shower fixtures are dated, pool table and balls are old, there are a ton of VCR tapes there but the VCR isn't plugged in, etc.) Some people will be turned off by this. For me, this added to the homey feel of the house and reminded me of some of the things from my own home growing up. Also, while there was space for the 10 of us, we had young kids who were 6 and 3. If everyone was an adult, I think it would hold 8 or 9 comfortably... others would need to sleep on a futon or couch.

We did find a few issues upon arrival that were inconvenient. The internet wasn't working and given that we arrived pretty late, we couldn't call anyone to fix it. We spent several hours trying to troubleshoot it ourselves and eventually figured out that the breaker had tripped and that a cord was unplugged in one of the other bedrooms, which were both causing the problem. Seems like something that should have been checked prior to arrival. There was a lot of excitement about using the hot tub, but when we opened it, we found a shrimp floating around in it. Clearly it hadn't been cleaned, which was disappointing. Nobody wanted to get in the hot tub after that, so we wound up not using it at all. I'm sure the property manager would have taken care of it if we had asked, but there were so many other things to do that we didn't bother.

Overall, these issues were pretty minor. The house was great! We would be happy staying here again.

Owner's Response: Aloha, This family home is perfect for large groups and special family gatherings. The views, walking trails and natural attractions are all within walking distance from the house. We love the fact that it is an older home with a unique design and character that was ahead of its time. We especially love the spaciousness and cozy feel and over time we have been updating and will continue to do so as time permits. Our new management team has been excellent so far but sometimes there are occasional oversights. Thank you for your input. These observations from guests like you help us to continue to improve the property. We will work hard to make sure that these issues are corrected and don't happen again. So glad that overall you enjoyed the house and your vacation. We hope to see you back again in the near future.

New Years in Kauai

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 had a wonderful time staying at the Oakley residence. It was a perfect set up for us. The house was super clean when we arrived as we got in late in the evening! The kitchen has everything necessary to cook for our family which made it easy to plan and then take excursions around the island. We loved the view of the ocean and saw whales which was very exciting for our grandchildren! We loved the quiet neighborhood and the walking path that is around the golf course. Thank you for a very memorable vacation that our family will remember forever!

There are so many nice walking paths throughout this quiet neighborhood and Queen's Bath is only a few houses away! We are very pleased with our property management team. They keep the home really clean and well maintained after updating the house along with many projects. This is the perfect home for families and people of all ages love the design, open spaces and privacy. Thank you for your nice comment and come back to the garden isle!

Christmas in Kauai!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful Christmas this year at the Oakley residence in Princeville. The accommodations were perfect for our large group, 8 adults and 3 kids. The house had everything we needed to make our vacation relaxing and fun. We took a treacherous hike ( due to the slippery conditions of the trail ) to Queen's Bath and saw 3 giant sea turtles. Hanging out on the lanai for hours afforded us the opportunity to see whales! The views are absolutely breathtaking. I was especially proud of the design my Dad incorporated with frameless corner windows so even from inside the view is uninterrupted. Had beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The property manager was very helpful and even went above and beyond to supply a small Christmas Tree. Santa managed to find the Oakley house no problem! Thank you for the opportunity to stay in your lovely home that my Dad designed. I hope to come back!

Our first family Christmas vacation at the Oakley House in Kauai

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the Oakley House in Princeville, Kauai just two days before Christmas. We all were very elated with the accommodation and the spectacular views of the ocean, mountains, and golf course. The design of the home is remarkable with the three levels, multiple doorways, and privacy.

The property manager was very accommodating and even brought us his personal small Christmas tree so we could put our grand children's gifts under the tree for Christmas morning. We were so thankful for the personal touch. Celebrating Christmas at the Oakley House was very special for us.

We spent so much time on the lanai overlooking the ocean, enjoying the tropical breeze, listening to and watching the birds, enjoying the Hawaiian geese, and occasionally managed to see a few whales as they made their appearance while migrating. What a relaxing and enjoyable vacation it was for the entire family. Thank you!

Paradise Found on the North Shore of Kauai

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time visiting and staying at this island home( the last was 14 years ago)! WE found this to be the most relaxing part of our vacation!! ( first part spent on Big Island of Hawaii)

The home is very spacious( sleeps 14 on beds easily) and the great room is so inviting with the high pavilion type ceiling and ceiling fans to capture the cool trades winds blowing off the 6th hole of the golf course literally overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The sunsets were incredible each night! Other guests at the Makai( Princeville Golf Course) would make the trek to the 6th hole just to see what we were literally on our deck with dinner and drinks observing!! Bonus: 4 pairs of nesting Albatrosses had baby chicks hidden on the 6th hole which we would visit daily!

The Hot tub was a nice feature and we used the garage outdoor shower and hoses to rinse off our beach gear and selves before entering the home. The washer /dryer and plethora of towels and beach accoutrements were well used and appreciated!

Our rooms had everything you needed: private baths, fans, towels, fresh Tropical flowers and stunning views!

The kitchen is a well appointed gourmet kitchen for a crowd. (This is the perfect family reunion spot because you are not on top of each other!) Even as i write this, I am looking for the holiday season for the rest of us to come....

North shore beaches with snorkeling, Bali Hai cliffs, hiking, water sports and NaPali coast so close. This is THE ISLAND(Hawaii in its natural, non touristy state) with so many things to do, you need to plan another vacation to fit it all in. Nevertheless, just hanging out at the house, walking down the short trek to the tide pools and swimming in the ocean makes a wonderfully relaxing day.. Easy to get on Island time on this property. Runs and walks around the Princeville golf course daily are absolutely tropical paradise!!!

Recommend a rental car here to do and see everything. And only other recommendation is to provide 2 beach chairs to take to the beach!

Owner's Response: This comment sums up our "newly" remodeled home (with new appliances) perfectly! It is a unique design allowing privacy and relaxation on every level. What a bonus to see the new Albatross chicks this time of year! Good suggestions as well. It's not too early to start making holiday plans and this is the perfect "family reunion" home. Mahalo!
