Romantic, Restored 1945, Bass Lake Cottage amid Flowering Gardens and Fountain

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Small cottage for 2 adults only. 1 mile to Bass Lake & 23 miles to Yosemite.

Stay in a restored, 1945, cottage that sits on 9 acres of forest. Sleep in a luxurious, king-size bed and wake to sounds of birds singing in a bubbling fountain. Sip coffee and view distant, granite peaks from a deck surrounded by flowering gardens. See deer and wild turkey stroll by. Spend your days exploring Yosemite & Bass Lake. Post pictures or stream movies with dedicated Wifi and Apple TV. Feel comfy with a new Fujitsu, HVAC unit. Share stories and plan tomorrow's adventures. Make life-long memories here. Here in my beloved, childhood home.

Cottage interior: This 800-square-foot cottage was hand-built in 1945 by the previous owner who worked at the North Fork Mill. My parents spent many years upgrading it. Interior walls were removed so the sleeping area, sitting area, and kitchenette are in one, large open space. French doors open to a small deck with Woodard patio furniture. It feels especially cozy on winter nights when the woods fill with snow. There is a newly, installed Fujitsu unit that provides heating and air-conditioning, so you'll feel comfortable. Kitchenette has a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven. It is designed to prepare light meals only --like you would in a hotel suite. I love the box windows and polished, copper sink from Mexico. A carved, teak armoire houses the Apple TV and Blu-Ray, DVD player. There are all kinds of small touches that make this feel like a place that is well-cared for and loved. The king-size bed is very supportive and has nice linens. The second room in the cottage is large. It contains a full-size bed, laundry area, and bathroom. The bathroom is unusual as the shower is small and the toilet sits in a large closet --think of an indoor, outhouse, in light, yellow paint :-)! Both are super tidy as the toilet is new and the shower is freshly tiled.

Interaction with Guests: I sincerely wish I could greet you and thank you for choosing my family home for your trip. I could never keep this place without your kindness and support. However, I live in Southern California, so my onsite hosts (who live 1/4 mile away) are available if you need anything!

Forest Setting: Nine-acre property backs to open forest and has no neighbors. Cottage feels secluded and is located with another, larger cabin. That larger cabin may be rented by another guest during your stay. You are looking at the cottage.

Location: The cottage is one mile from the Bass Lake Boat Launch; 1.5 miles from Miller's Landing Resort; and 23 miles from the entrance to Yosemite National Park and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

About Leah

I am a mother of eight-year-old twins and an economics professor. I enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. I love hiking in the Sierras with my friends and family. Just looking at maps of Bass Lake, Yosemite, and the Eastern Sierra makes me smile. My favorite poet is Robert Frost. I listen to alternative and classic rock. Watching Vikings is my guilty pleasure.

I went to school at UC Santa Cruz and UW Madison. I work at Cal State Northridge and live near Agoura Hills in Southern California.

Leah purchased this cottage in 1966

Why Leah chose Wishon

This is my childhood home. It has been in my family for the past 50 years. The property has only been sold once. The original owner worked at the North Fork Mill and hand-built these two houses in the 1940s. He lived in the cottage while building the cabin. My parents spent many years upgrading the cabins and landscaping the property. I miss them and wish they could see how much their grandchildren enjoy this place. I love the home and this area. It has been an incredible blessing to take my children to the same places where I played, hiked, and swam as a child! I owe a debt of gratitude to my guests as they help me keep this place.

What makes this cottage unique

The cabins really have their own personality. The wood walls are so warm and inviting. Sitting on the deck is a perfect way to start or end your day. I love to watch birds singing and bathing in the fountain; to look at the Peckinpah Mountain range at sunset; and to see the Milky Way framed by towering ponderosa pines at night. The property is so quiet and peaceful --allowing you to really relax and sleep soundly at night.

Wonderful little cottage in the Sierra foothills. Visited in March and had some unexpected llcold snowy weather. When we first arrived it was so cold inside it was a couple of hours before we could take our coats off once we turned on the heat. But once the place warmed up it was very cozy and comfy. There were warm down throw blankets and bedding. A tile floor with lots of throw rugs and charming fixtures and amenities. Everything we needed to have a lovely romantic weekend. We walked to the lake, (Bass Lake) and had fun exploring the area since it was too snowy to go up into Yellowstone, we were not prepared to do much mountain winter driving. The caretakers were helpful and concerned for our welfare, but not at all intrusive. All in all a wonderful weekend and wonderful place to stay. Now we’d like to come back in a warmer month to experience the parts we missed in the cold.

Great Romantic Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I booked this cottage for my husbands birthday trip, and it turned out great. It did rain and snow, but the view was gorgeous. The place was exactly like the pictures and very clean. We did bring a couple extra blankets which was good due to the cold (March). The heater works great in the cottage! Alot of netflix movie choices for when we stayed inside. The whole look and feel of the place was just as we had imagined. Not sure why some reviews complained of the small kitchen, it was perfect for what we needed. Bring your own creamer (non provided). Might need more coffee if staying more than 2 days. Great restaurants only 20 or 30 min away. Try Smokehouse 41. Water runs really cold at first, but gets hot after a while. Only thing is bathroom (Toliet seat) tends to get really cold especially waking in middle of night to pee. Kinda cool though, reminded us of an outhouse. The 2 recliners in the living room were awesome! Very comfortable and the king size bed had us sleeping like babies. Overall great place to stay. My husband met the neighbor as he checked in to make sure we were okay. Other than that, complete privacy! Having a washer and dryer in the cottage is so convienent! I put our blankets in the dryer for about 10 minutes, took them out and we used them on the recliners at night while watching movies. Be nice to have a little bigger tv, but worked perfect. I would highly recommend staying here for anyone wanting peace and relaxation away from city.

Lovely little cottage

  • 4 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a blast last weekend in Yosemite for the first time. The location was as expected, pretty close to the edge of the park. The cabin was in great shape, everything was clean and ready for us as we arrived. The only thing I would mention is that the bugs came out during the day and at night like crazy, we tried to sit outside on the porch and couldn't really do so comfortably. Not sure if it was the location, time of year or the water close by. Not having a full kitchen ended up being OK because we planned ahead! Otherwise we had a great time and would definitely refer this to friends if they wanted to get away for a quick weekend! Thanks again for having us Leah!

Cute Little Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a few nights for a dirt bike trip and it was a nice little place to stay in. The only complaint we had was the lack of ability to cook. It would have been convenient to have a BBQ or a plugin stove top. Especially since Oakhurst is a good 30-minute drive. There also wasn't a smoke alarm in the cottage which wasn't great. The AC unit was great and worked really well with both AC and Heat (the wood burning stove is locked up and not available for use). But we found the washer and dryer to be a great addition and very useful. Frank was the closeby host and he was very friendly and nice enough to stop by and check on us. Leah was helpful with her recommendations and had prompt replies and was friendly. We probably wouldn't stay here again just because of the cooking situation but she does have a microwave and microwave oven if that is enough for you.

Owner's Response: The cottage has a kitchenette with a microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker. It does not have an oven, BBQ, or dishwasher. Thus, the cottage is best suited for guests who plan to prepare light meals, like you would in a hotel suite. The wood-burning stove is locked during our dry season (March through October) because of the extreme fire risk in California. There is a smoke alarm above the cabinets in the kitchenette.

Very Nice!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little cabin in a lovely setting. We were quite busy running around while in the area, but the location was very quiet and peaceful with lots of trees and nice views... a nice place to start and end our day. The cabin was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Leah was very responsive to our questions and issues. We really enjoyed staying there, and definitely will again.
