Step back in time... to the early 1900's and explore Maui from the homestead of the first manager of Haleakala Ranch! This is a very unique vacation rental in Upcountry Maui. Kilohana was designed and built in 1916-1917 by the Haleakala Cattle Ranch as a retirement home for its first Ranch Manager, Louis von Tempski.
In the Kama'aina tradition, we continue to make every effort to make Kilohana a welcoming, comfortable, safe and healthy home for our family and others. Kilohana retains its kama’aina flavor with a large ranch kitchen, living room and dining room (with koa wood dining table & furniture).
The master bedroom enjoys a large koa wood bed from the missionary era. An 85 foot screened lanai provides a beautiful view of West Maui and “down-county.” Kilohana boasts a variety of more than 50 trees, shrubs and plants many of which were planted by von Tempski, his daughters, and our family. In keeping with Kilohana’s agricultural heritage, it is surrounded by pasture land and friendly animals can be seen just beyond the fence. The property is planted with more than 48 fruit trees; primarily citrus, but avocados and bananas will be found. They are there to be enjoyed by our family, friends and “guests.”
Kilohana is located in Makawao, the closest thing to an urban center in Upcountry. Today Makawao is a lively community of cowboys and hippies, with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. In the renovated stores, you'll find everything from a general store and an old-fashioned barbershop to health food, holistic medicine, and designer fashions. You can buy feed for your horse or gourmet olive oil for your kitchen, a bowl of saimin or fettuccini with porcini mushrooms. The town is a paradox of old paniolo and new age, pickup trucks and BMW's. That's what makes Makawao special - the old welcoming the new in the true Upcountry spirit.
And all of this is just a mile down the hill from Kilohana. Forgot the bottle of wine for dinner? No problem... run down to Rodeo General Store in Makawao. Looking for fresh Local pastries.... nothing better than Komoda's Store, a local tradition!
And a few miles down the hill: Haliimaile General Store, one of the best restaurants on Maui!
We are happy to share our piece of Maui’s history with you and look forward to welcoming you to Kilohana!

I hope you received the e-mail I sent you before we left the beautiful Kilohana. We enjoyed our stay very much and it made our return home very sad. It was the best month we spent in Maui! We hope to return to Kilohana again.
Just a note to express how perfect the ‘Kilohana’ house was for our vacation. We were a family of 7 people including grown children, their partners and a 7 yr. old girl.
The house provided ample space for all to have lots of privacy but at the same time communal areas such as the kitchen, dining room and living room which were set up beautifully for everyone to gather, cook and visit. The grounds, too, were both peaceful and breathtaking and there was more than enough room for play, walking and even meditation. If ever in the future we travel to Maui with family or a large group of friends, we would most definitely stay here again.
We had a really great time and loved the house. In particular, I really liked the huge dining room table and how the house had so many amenities available! The location was truly perfect too.
Our family has visited Maui and stayed at Kilohana three times. We have never been disappointed in the surroundings or the accommodations. The home is in a unique location that allows you to watch the sun rise in the morning and then watch the sun set on the other side of the island in the evening. The home is well cared for and in a beautiful location next to the working ranch. The kids loved watching the animals and at times feeding them. There are nice places to visit close by and being part way up Haleakala provides excellent cooling in the evening. Staying at Kilohana gives you a real feel for the way Hawaii was before all the big hotels.
Our vacation at Kilohana was one of the best ever. Love the house and beautiful grounds.
My wife and I are truly fortunate to have the ambition, time and resources be to travel all over the world. Antarctica, Kilimanjaro, Amazon, Rome, London, Prague… you get the idea, but I can say without any hesitation that the best place of all is at Kilohana!!
On our first 4 trips to Maui, we stayed at the traditional hotels on the water, but as we explored the island and specifically the Upcountry, we knew that the Makawao area was where we wanted to stay next visit, perfect spring like weather every day. Luckily, no make that, VERY luckily, we were able to make arrangements to stay at Kilohana. The view of West Maui is spectacular and the sunsets are a treat every evening. The house has 3 large bedrooms, each with full baths. The living and dining rooms together are easily over 1,000 sq. ft. The dining room has full glass floor to ceiling windows on 2 sides.
There are lime and orange trees out the back door. What fun to have a fresh lime for your beverage! You have several acres of space between you and your neighbors on 3 sides, so you have lots of privacy. The home is at the edge of Makawao and the neighborhood is very quiet…except for the occasional rooster around 5AM.
The kitchen is very large with its own breakfast table. It was the center of activity on most evenings. There are many nice restaurants in the immediate area, but to stay “home” and enjoy a leisurely beverage with that fresh lime is so much more relaxing.
We have had 2 other couples stay with us on different occasions and we never felt cramped or in each other’s way. No matter where you may stay on Maui, you need to drive to see it all. Kilohana is centrally located and just 5 minutes from the supermarket and 15 minutes from Costco.
We have been lucky to stay at Kilohana at least 5 times, sometimes for several weeks at a stretch. As long as this home is available, we will always stay there. Nothing else comes close for location, views, privacy, accommodations and value. Honestly, it feels like home to us.
