Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a really lovely time and enjoyed ourselves enormously. You are really lucky to have such a lovely villa in such a wonderful area.

There were too many highlights to mention. Fabulous walks, storks, hoopoes, the restaurant in the village of Santana da Serra where the people were fabulous...

Lovely, characterful hill top escape

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely property with much rustic charm and character. It has been converted from an old farm house with many original features retained but all the necessary modern conveniences added. The thick stone walls and small windows keep the cottage cool on even the hottest days and nights and its hill-top location catches the cooling evening breezes. The large pool terrace gets all day sun and privacy. The pool itself is of the highest quality, modern and clean. The kitchen offers all you need and the built-in barbecue works really well. The property is less than 1km from the village of Santana da Serra where you can buy essential supplies from the village shop or eat hearty food at very little cost from one of the three cafe/bars. The village, like the local terrain, has a rugged charm and as we left was gearing up for a fiesta complete with bull fighting. The is real Portugal and although it is less than an hour by road from here to the beaches of the Algarve it is very different in character. Beyond the village we found two local restaurants serving good, simple local food to local people. You can eat very well for 10-12 euros per person including wine. There is plenty to do locally: cyclists or walkers have much to explore, there are plenty of local markets and the beautiful beaches of the west coast are an hour away by car (and well worth the journey). Slide and Splash (the best of the Algarve waterparks) is 45 mins away. But you could easily hole yourself up at the house, enjoy the pool (private and not overlooked) the well-maintained garden and the peace. The stars at night are spectacular with lots of shooting stars, even with the moon in apogee as it was during our most recent visit. After two visits we have grown quite attached to this place and our four children love it. It is very child friendly. Algarve Getaways were helpful and efficient and Dave and Hilda, the English couple who greet you and take care of cleaning, are very nice indeed. The property was spotlessly clean and is equipped with everything you need. The kitchen is well equipped and there is ample space for up to six adults. Highly recommended and superb value for money, particularly when compared to a comparable property in the Algarve.

Paradise on earth.

If you are truly looking to escape and want pure peace and tranquility with a traditional Portuguese village a mere 10 minute stroll away, then look no further, you will not beat the Monte Nova. We have been taking our annual holiday in Portugal for the past 15 years, always through Algarve Getaways whose customer service is second to none and we thought that we had experienced everything this region had to offer.... until this year. We originally planned a two centre break, a week here and a week by the sea, but this was such an amazing place we ended up extending our stay. My girls decided that they were happier here than in Albufeira by the sea!!!! The pool, scenery and wildlife are amazing by day and yet the sky at night is something else. I have two teenage girls who enjoyed every moment and cannot wait to return. The accommodation is clean, spacious and equipped to the highest standard, Ping Doce supermarket within a 20 minute drive and yet once you are at the property, you would honestly believe you were in the middle of nowhere. If you do feel the need to explore, the couple who maintain the property, Hilda and David are on the other end of the phone and are willing and able to suggest places of interest ,as they live in the area and have done for many years. We took a trip to Milfontes, a beautiful drive and an amazing place, beautiful beach and countryside but very different from the Algarve itself. I cannot recommend this treasure highly enough. As long as you are truly looking to escape, you will not be disappointed. We really believe that we have found heaven on earth and we will definitely be back.

Beautiful and peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

This is our third year in a row staying at Monte Novo in Santana Da Serra and it never fails to disappoint us. It is situated on a hill with breathtaking views of stunning scenery. It has a very lovely swimming pool and two terraces. The Monte itself possesses its original rustic charm but has been sympathetically renovated so that there is everything one needs.

It is remote enough to feel at peace without feeling isolated and the village is just a pleasant walk away with Ourique and a well-stocked supermarket just a 20 minute drive away. The Algarve is an hour's drive so that all the main places can be reached easily. If you feel adventurous there are other beaches on the Western coast such as Milfontes which are well worth the visit.

This year we discovered some beautiful lakes nearby during a short car trip, where we stopped to refresh our feet!

If you are looking for peace and quiet with a degree of self-sufficiency then this is for you. Personally this is like a home from home for us and we look forward to it all year. You are advised to hire a car so that you can get about if needs be. The staff at Algarve Getaways are so helpful and accommodating and make the stay run very smoothly.

We cannot recommend it enough.

Wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Santana day Serra. The house was as beautiful as on the pictures, it was clean and basics were supplied. Our children enjoyed the garden a lot. The pool was nice but the water was cold when we were there. The landscape was beautiful, all was green and a lot of flowers.

Dave and Hilda, and Howard and Barbara at Algarve Getaways were very friendly and helpful.

Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets in paradise

  • 5 of 5

The villa was spotlessly clean on arrival and we received a warm welcoming from Dave and Hilda. The villa was very comfortable and we loved simply relaxing and chilling on some days, whilst exploring on others. There is an excellent supermarket in Ourique and we had a wonderful meal at the Coimbra restaurant on the IC1, and one of the best pepper steaks ever. We also liked going down to the little village of Santana da Serra and sitting at the snack bar, watching the villagers go about their business and buying a few provisions from the local store. We could not have relaxed more if we had tried!

Beautiful sunrises and breathtaking sunsets were the perfect start and end to every day. We had a very enjoyable stay at this lovely old villa and will definitely be back. Excellent communications from Barbara, we were most impressed with the whole experience.

The perfect idyll

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in Monte Novo. It is a beautiful villa with everything you could wish for. The finish and attention to details are great. The leaflets provided were very useful and we explored extensively and thoroughly enjoyed the surrounding areas, such as Santiago do Cacem with all the windmills and Castra do Cola between Santana da Serra and Ourique. We also visited other sites along 'road's that were little more dirt tracks which made it so much fun.

MONTE NOVO is set in a 3 000m² plot, with an abundance of olive and fruit trees, scented flowers, indigenous plants and wonderful bird life.

It is located 1km along a dirt road, from the village of SANTANA DA SERRA which is situated in the south-central Alentejo, just north of the Algarve off the IC1.

OURIQUE is a larger town, 20 minutes’ drive away, with an excellent SUPERMARKET and en route you can visit Castro da Cola, an ancient settlement with a great restaurant, surrounded by lovely walking country.

THE SURROUNDING AREA is hilly and rugged, with narrow valleys and streams, crossed by winding paths, and populated by many birds and wildlife.

The Santa Clara da Velha dam and nature reserve is of breath-taking beauty and has FISHING, BOATING and other WATER-SPORTS on the dam.
