About Sam and Linda Brown
"We look forward to meeting all of our vacationers who will visit the beautiful Black Hills in 2019 and 2020. Again we are reminded of our gratitude for the past wonderful years which we were blessed to enjoy, and for all the new friends we made because they chose to stay with us." —— Owners Sam and Linda Brown live in the residence, separately from your suite. —— We fairly recently remodeled the street-visible Walnut Avenue and East Main Street sides of our business, creating more of a storefront presence (on the East Main Street end), with a log-railed deck for guests and customers to enjoy. These efforts unexpectedly earned us the Community Pride Award from the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce. —— Black Hills Home Cabins is also known to a diversity of travelers as Mountains To Prairies Bed and Breakfast about which over the years many satisfied customers have taken time to write genuinely fond online reviews and/or heart-warming notes in the guest book on the cleanliness, comfort and friendliness of our established hospitality business. We have in the last few years begun renting our guest nests as In-Home Cabins (at lower rates than the bed and breakfast rates), mostly due to the happy expressions of our guests who often referred to their space as their CABIN! Our transitioning tends more and more to Vacation Rental By Owner. So, there you have a little history of the way our business has developed over the years. —— All aspects of this diverse business property are under the auspices of Smiling Bear, LLC
Why Sam and Linda Brown chose Hill City
We love that our property is in the middle of this quaint mountain town, especially since Hill City is so friendly and homey, with easy access to the Mickelson Trail, as well as brimming with history. And we love the central location in the beautiful Black Hills National Forest. Hill City truly is the HEART of the Hills! From our corner we have so many delightful choices for recreational direction that we often park at the stop sign and inquire of each other, 'Which way should we go?' One of our favorite things to do is to take the scenic drive to Sylvan Lake and hike around the lake, soaking in the beauty from granite vantage points along the way. Another favorite is to take the scenic drive along Mount Rushmore Road and park at Horsethief Lake, where we can begin at the boardwalk for a hike around the lake. Serene and beautiful! Often on Sunday afternoons, we will pick a way to go to Custer State Park, where we may begin our adventure with a nap...then view buffalo and other wildlife, and go for a nature walk.

Cozy and centrally located
We had a great stay here. Hill City in in the middle of most things you would come to see (expect a lot of driving however). Sam, the proprietor, was super helpful as a guide to places to see. SD has much more to offer than just Mt. Rushmore! Came home wanting to return!
Cozy place to stay
The studio type apartment was very cozy. Sam spent a lot of time making sure we understood how things functioned and chatting with us.
The hours of the coffee shop were a bit erratic, but being the end of the season, it was understandable
Our favorite thing was the walk ability to local restaurant and stores
Black Hills visit
This cabin is in a great location, central to the sights and walking distance to town. It was a pleasure to stay and our hosts were very welcoming. We would definitely book this cabin again.
Great place to stay, would come back again everythiing was as expected.
Close to all conveniences in town, Sam and Linda are wonderful hosts.
Sam and Linda are excellent hosts. They met us late on the first day and took the time to give us suggestions for hiking while we were in Hill City. Will definitely stay with them again the next time we are in the Black Hills.
Great little cabin
This was a great little cabin for my family of 5 to stay. This place is perfect if your looking for a good place to stay at night. It’s not large but it was perfect for us as we planned to be out exploring the Black Hills during the day. The cabin was very clean and well kept. Sam and Linda were great hosts and even made sure we knew where all the good points of interest were to visit. Beds were comfy and slept well. I would recommend this place and stay again if in the area.
