“Thank you so much for fitting us in for the night - we just wish we had discovered this place earlier and spent more time here. After more than ten years working in the travel industry and traveling all over the world, staying in many types of accommodations - this property has to be one of the coolest, funkiest, most fun places we have stayed. We absolutely LOVED IT!!
Congratulations Bob on creating a fabulous eclectic environment. My four year old son just asked if we could stay here forever.

Your Host 'Bob' has worked a decade overseas assisting people in nations ravaged by wars to rebuild their lives and nation. During the time overseas 'Bob' was called the 'movie man' not because he knew much about movies but because Bob would share a movie with everyone: Sharing a move led to sharing popcorn and sometimes teaching people of other nations how to make popcorn in a theater popcorn machine: Bob left many popcorn machines around the world and many friendly popcorn lovers. During those 10 years, Bob had little time to visit the wonderful home and retreat he wants to share with you. For Bob, relaxation was no longer than 21 days home at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - 'Music Cave of Refuge' and making Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua a special place of refuge to relax, reflect and share. Darlene our co-host would put back in order the projects Bob did not finish. Darlene lived during my long time overseas at my home in the downstairs living area: I am happy to say Darlene still lives in the downstairs unit of the home and can be your best guide to the islands or she can be invisible: Your Choice. Darlene managed a Hostel for more than 3 years that specialized in eco-tourism and hiking (a favorite stop for world travelers). Darlene has been an island resident for 26 years. Now that Darlene is retired it is wonderful to have her around as a friend and resource. I encourage you to consider the advantages of a home with such a great friend and resource: We hope you can relax as we do at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - with our Hawaii and World knowledge - We truly believe there is no finer place in Hawaii or the World.
Aloha and Mahalo from Darlene and Bob!
Bob purchased this house in 2004
The area and home have some of the cleanest air in the World. Home location is approximately 1 mile from a weather point used as a baseline reference for World clean air data. There is sunshine almost every day usually when it rains during the day (not very common) the sun will always return. It is very common for late night and early morning showers allowing for a lush green environment during the very sunny days and it makes for very moderate temperatures never (almost never) temperatures exceeding the 80's. With the mild but steady winds, humidity is generally not an issue. The home offers Seclusion, Seclusion, Seclusion with beautiful surrounding areas. Just outside your doorstep are wonderful walking areas and scenic roads: When you return home the home environment and outstanding entertainment option offer almost a vacation in a vacation.
View the steam rising from the lava ocean entry and from the front lot view the lava flowing down the mountainside when surface lava is present. SECLUSION! CHANGING VISTA VIEWS! MORNING AND EVENING WALKS! Almost no one knows anyone lives here! Two isolated uncrowded beaches one a 5 minute walk and the other a 15 minute walk. Must be one of the best kept secrets and places on the globe.
We enjoyed every moment at this Musical Cave of Refuge. The home was spotless when we arrived, with fresh flowers on the table, and Darlene gave us a very warm welcome with open arms. Every amenity you can think of was provided, and the home is beautifully decorated, providing a nostalgic atmosphere in a tropical paradise. Darlene gave us very useful information, and tended to our every need with promptness and genuine care. Bikes were provided, complete with good lights and helmets, and we rode them to the lava flow, a very fun and awesome experience. This hale was an amazing place to return to after a day of adventure on the island, and after a relaxing supper you can listen to wonderful tunes on the Rock-Ola bubbler jukebox or watch movies or TV on one of the many screens, complete with theatre popcorn. We have stayed at several other properties before, but this place is "hands down" the best home we have ever rented.
We spent 11 nights in this house enjoying it and the surrounding area. The area is very quiet in a cul de sac of only a few houses. You can see the ocean over the lava fields and no road noise. At night you only hear the coqui frogs and there are fans in every room to create white noise if the sounds of nature bother you. The house is exactly as you described--beautiful kitchen with everything you need plus. Funny eclectic collection of vintage radios, old album covers, vintage juke box with hundreds of different albums. Lots of DVDs and unlimited Netflix on big screens--one screen in each room, even the bedrooms and kitchen. You can play darts, make ice cream and popcorn with a professional popcorn maker--just like the movie theaters!! Rice cooker, bread maker, etc...There are snorkel masks (try them on first so you know they fit), binoculars to view the volcano, flashlights, FIVE bikes for guest use (with helmets and lights), a washer and dryer...and and and. Darlene is the caretaker and she will take care of anything you need. I call her Queen of Kalapana because she's VERY updated about everything to do in the near and far area. If you want to do a day trip/road trip, ask her about all the options. We mentioned that binoculars would be nice for guest to watch the lava falling into the sea and she ordered some. We didn't have a flashlight, so she went out next day and bought two headlamps and two high power flashlights. Believe me, she's very responsive to customer needs. Great to experience that Aloha spirit up close....Some of our adventures:
-Wednesday evening Uncle Roberts market with food, band, all kinds of items to buy....A real experience with a lot of local flavor. Walk there and back over the lava.
-Sunday farmers market--a big one about 20 minutes away
-Early morning--or any time at the hot pools
-Snorkeling in Kapaho Tide Pools--we went every day. Amazing fish and unique setting
-Bike ride along coastal rode early morning--stop at the resort for a nice coffee and wrap. Fantastic road with beautiful trees and foliage, flowers....Try a side road and check out some informal farm stands for 50 cent avos
-day trip to Waipio Valley--up the coast
--Hilo beach parks for BIG TURTLES and nice swimming
--We went THREE EVENINGS to view the lava and take the bikes--it's only around 35 to 40 minutes and then back. Hike to the lava streams if possible. We did it and it was amazing
--check out Pahoa
There's so much. MAHALO Colleen and Werner
Our stay at Music Cave of Refuge was a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience. The area and people truly became our home away from home. We found so much to do and see that we could've easily enjoyed another week! The home is one of the best values in the entire area and provides the perfect relaxing environment for your stay. Darlene is nearby and provided a wealth of information and suggestions for everything from what to do to where to eat and shop. The Music Cave of Refuge itself is decorated as well as any “Disney” property and made my wife and I feel 20 years younger. Fortunately we had our Son with us to figure out the remotes, and wealth of electronics. The home is very clean, comfortable and secure, easily handling the three adults we had during our stay. The two bedrooms with two full bathrooms served our needs well. The location is away from all of the typically touristy things Hawaii has to offer, but close enough that a day excursion can take you almost anywhere on the island. The local towns and farmers markets provide an insider’s view of what it is really like to live on the Big Island. We found that local restaurant prices were reasonable, and the food was excellent at every place we tried. During the evenings we returned to the cottage and relaxed with drinks on the lanai, enjoying the cool breezes and sounds of the ocean. After cocktails, we gathered in the kitchen and dining facilities to cook and eat at the home. After dinner we could watch a movie on one of the 3 “BIG SCREENS” with a tasty batch of popcorn. It was the perfect ending to the day where together we would plan for the next. If you want to really experience the real Hawaii, and rainforest settings with a view of extraordinary nature (Lava flow) that you may never in your life have a chance to witness again, then I highly recommend staying at the Music Cave of Refuge for your next vacation on the Big Island. Special thanks to Darlene for all your help as a tour guide, restaurant critic, and especially coming to find us when we got lost. You are truly special.
Very well stocked place, more than what is expected. Lots of electronics, we enjoyed the jukebox. Walking distance to Uncle Roberts farmers market, quite the fun evening experience. Caretaker lives downstairs, she's very friendly with lots of helpful info about the area. She's a gem.
If you want to feel the true magic of Hawaii, this is the area to be in, and the Music Cave of Refuge, is the place to stay. Every thought of what a vacationer needs, especially families, is provided at the house. First the location is truly mind blowing. We stayed for 7 nights and could of stayed for another few weeks and still had plenty to see and do. If you want to hike to the lava flow this is the closest location. The parking lot to where you start the hike is a 5 minute drive from the house. Also a huge highlight, especially those who have children, is Ahalanui Park, a natural swimming pool that is sheltered from the waves and a wonderful place for kids to swim. The drive to and from the house to Ahalanui Park is spectacular, with tree lined country roads and priceless ocean views that connect with your soul. The town of Pahoa is a 15 minute drive and there are dining options and even scheduled daily events that are going on. Another highlight is Uncle Roberts farmers market on Wednesday nights, you can walk from the house and only takes 10 minutes. Locals gather at this weekly event with food from different countries and live music going on. Hilo is just a short 30 minute drive, with day trips to the north that you can see wonderful waterfalls. Volcano National Park is a 45 minute drive away, if you happen to have a 4th grader, check out the free pass that you can download on their website. Darlene is a wonderful hostess who makes sure that all your needs are met. The kitchen comes with anything a cook would need and beyond. A huge highlight, in the master bedroom is the view of the ocean beyond the lava. At night, the special treat is the frog orchestra and all the sounds. There are 2 bedrooms and I have 3 kids, so I was able to fit everyone comfortably, with the many comforters and blankets that are provided. The entertainment system in the house is amazing. The many streaming movie channels make for a wonderful relaxation after exploring all day. The house is so clean and kept up so well. Darlene even provided us with snorkel equipment for the whole family. Take it from me, I was a travel agency owner for 20 years, I have sent multitudes of clients to the Hawaiian Islands, and also been many times myself. However, this last trip was the best I ever had because I had never been to this part of the island. A true gem, with everything you need, and an amazing hostess that goes above and beyond your needs.
My family and I only spent one night at Bob's home in Pahoa, but it was really great! Darlene was a gracious and friendly hostess, and the house was clean and comfortable for a family of five. The popcorn maker, jukebox, and multiple big screen projectors with Netflix made the stay fun for everyone. The location was private and out of the way, and we walked out onto the lava field to the ocean, which was very cool. If you want to stay on this part of the Big Island, I highly recommend Bob's house!
