About Jim Massey

My name is Jim Massey. I am a Civil Engineer, General Contractor, and Real Estate Broker, born in Winston-Salem. I came to Roaring Gap in 1965 where I met and married my wife, Nancy. She is a registered nurse with a specialty in surgery in Elkin and my partner in the real estate and construction business. WE ARE NEW TO THE RENTAL BUSINESS AND WILL NEGOITATE OUR RATES BASED ON NUMBER OF NIGHTS AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE STAYING. WE WILL ALSO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR BRINGING A PET.

Jim Massey purchased this chalet in 1998

Why Jim Massey chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

My company designed and built this house at about half its present size in 1966 for a couple from Winston-Salem. Years later we built them a bigger home two houses up the street, and sold this house to a couple from Florida. When it became available again in 1998, Nancy and I bought it because all the really good view lots had been built on and we had always dreamed of living on one of the spectacular view properties on Ridge Road. We gutted it down to the bare framing, doubled its size and built it all over again, finishing in 2000. We lived here for 10 years and then moved into a new home across the street in Olde Beau. Ultravista is presently for sale, but will not be shown when there is a guest in the house. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR HOME BY VIEWING OUR MORE THAN 30 FIVE STAR REVIEWS!

What makes this chalet unique

Having designed and built almost all the view homes on Ridge Road, Nancy and I knew that the view was good, but didn't know it was spectacular until we lived there. I didn't know that sunrises sometimes are as beautiful as the best sunset. Also, I had no idea that a full moon could be so brilliantly exciting. Watching lightning storms in the valley from up here is really special. So are fireworks in valley communities on July 4th. When the fog is lying in the valley, the mountain tops look like islands in a cotton sea. And every night when the lights come on down below, called 'valley stars' by locals, it looks like a large city. The view is different every day.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jim,Thank you again for your gracious hospitality. We truly enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful time. Everyone had nothing but good comments about the house, location and of course the beautiful view. I think we spent as much time on the deck as we could regardless of the weather!!! It was a perfect place for us!It was a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to seeing you again in the not to distant future.Kind regards,Bobby

Million dollar view!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our Thanksgiving Holiday stay at this spacious mountain home. Pictures do not do the home justice. Amazing! The pantry and kitchen were very well stocked. Plenty of room for our family of 14. Located in a neighborhood but looking out all the windows across the back of the house you have the feeling of being secluded in the mountains. Beautiful views of sunrise and sunset. Mr. Massey was wonderful to work with.

Weekend with Friends

  • 5 of 5

We're a group of lifelong friends. Each year we get together for a long weekend of fun, conversation, visiting local sights and catching up on everyone's family. We stayed in Jim's house last year in the Spring. This year, we got together in late Fall. Jim's house is a great place with a million dollar view, plenty of bedrooms and baths, a large den and dining large enough for eight comfortably. It's located near Mount Airy, home of Andy Griffith, and several nice wineries. The house feels like home. If is the perfect place for a group of friends or a large family. The neighborhood is great and it is located near interstates and several neat towns. We highly recommend visiting here soon and often.

We have lots of guests that visit nearby Mount Airy, our many North Carolina wineries, as well as Stone Mountain State Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are glad that you feel at home here, and feel that is our best compliment. We look forward to having you back.......Jim and Nancy

Great views in a home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

We're always looking for a house that accommodates our family of 8 adults and 6 children aged 2-10. We hit a home run with this find. Beautiful, south-facing views of the NC Foothills in a well-stocked home with everything you need and then some. Proximity to Stone Mountain State Park and local offerings make it even better for quick, daytime excursions (always interesting with this many people).

This house feels like a home from the moment you walk in, making the ease into vacation mode that much easier. The owners have a "use what you need" and pay it forward approach to renting, which means common household items are on hand.

As with any rental I always recommend bringing a quality kitchen knife or two and your own pillows. Although plenty of knives and pillows, nothing really comes close to those items from home for prepping and sleeping...two high points on my list for any trip.

To close I'll say this...in our comprehensive search for homes in the NC mountains,

this house is a find when it comes to value and accommodations, occupying a sweet spot I've only found with a few other properties.

Superb Family Lodging!

  • 5 of 5

I was bringing family and friends together for my son's wedding and needed a venue that could host three families with small children plus adults- a place that could offer some privacy yet entertain all ages. This was THE right place. From the family suites to the ping pong table to the relaxing deck, it could not have been better. When my four year old grandson discovered the tile garage with a kid's size basketball hoop, he was in heaven. We had a terrific time and much was due to the superb lodging that is designed to facilitate comfort and fun for all ages.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Kelly, for choosing our house atop Roaring Gap Mountain to celebrate your son's wedding and bringing a large group of all ages. Our large family lived there in a house I designed and built many years ago, and to see other families enjoy it the way we did does my heart good. The tile floor in the 3 car garage with kid's size basketball hoop and other games, the "kid safe" 80 foot long view deck, little people's loft with "secret room" , and other stuff seems to make children of all ages at home. Hope to see you again soon, Jim

Wedding festivities

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a long weekend to enjoy the beautiful wedding of our youngest son, which was held at the Raffaldini Winery. My, now daughter in law, wanted the rehearsal dinner on the back deck of the house and it was a beautiful event. The food was amazing, which was catered by Public 2 from Elkin. We had approximately 25 lovely people to enjoy the love of two families coming together from opposite location of the US.

Thank you very much for making our stay enjoyable to all.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Jane, for your thoughtful review of your trip to our area of the mountains. We get quite a few wedding groups, and are fortunate to have a house with large decks and open spaces to handle portions of the overall event. I enjoyed meeting some of the wedding party, and especially the photographs you sent for our "thank you" bulletin board. I wish you all the best!..........Jim

This cusom designed and built home, ULTRAVISTA, is located in High Meadows Development, home of the private High Meadows Golf and Country Club. Because the owner is a member, house guests can play golf most weekdays. The course is a meticulously maintained layout designed by the well known architect George Cobb. For more golf, guests may play across the street at Olde Beau Golf Club, which Curtis Strange called 'one of the greatest mountain golf courses ever built'. There are 2 more 18 hole courses within a 20 minute drive.

3 miles from High Meadows is the center of the famous 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway provides sightseeing, hiking, bicycling, restaurants, and pleasurable driving to many points of interests.

4 miles from High Meadows is the entry to the 14,000 acre Stone Mountain State Park. Bring your camera, because there is a lot to see and do - scenic walking trails, flora & fauna, waterfalls, horse trails, camping, trout fishing, picknicking, rock climbing and much more. Here in Alleghany County is the developing New River State Park (New River is the second oldest river in the world) for camping, tubing, hiking, picknicking, etc.

11 miles north is Sparta, NC, our county seat and a great small town to visit. Nestled between the local mountains, you will find our Court House, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Farmer's Hardware, many restaurants, delis, and coffee shops, museum, arts and craft stores, wonderful local pottery, artists, campgrounds, fitness center, antiques & collectibles, grocery stores, pet care, river recreation, sporting goods, winery, etc.

Vineyards and wine making comprise a huge industry in our area. Many wineries are within a 30 minute drive from ULTRAVISTA with tours, tasting, restaurants, and award winning wines.
