About the property

2 Bedroom, 2.5 Bath Private Mountainside Home Located Close To Everything!

Casa Colibri de Atenas is conveniently located 25 minutes from Juan Santamaria Int'l Airport (SJO), 35 minutes from San Jose, 45 minutes from beaches, 1.5hrs from Poas Volcano, 2 hrs from Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs, 2 hrs from Manuel Antonio, and 2.5 hrs from Monteverde Cloud Forest. We are centrally located to nearly all the best sights and activities in Costa Rica.

Our home is nestled on the Pica Flora ridge above Atenas. At our altitude of 2,800', we have very few insects. The undisrupted balance of nature allows natural predators (gekkos, iguanas, oppossums, etc) to dispatch most of the few pests that live at this altitude, including most mosquitoes.

*ZIKA Update*:

We have amazing weather year round. The rainy season is especially enjoyable with brilliant, blue sunrises and then the occasional afternoon tropical downpour. Conde Nast and National Geographic have dubbed our town as having the 'best climate in the world'.

Casa Colibri is equipped with all the amenities you'll need to make it your home away from home. WiFi, Cable TV, fully stocked kitchen with all your cooking needs. Bedroom 1 on the first floor has a king size bed, large closet space, en suite shower/toilet, and direct access to the outdoor jacuzzi. Bedroom 2 on the second floor has a queen size bed plus a single bed, large work desk, walk-in closet, luxurious en suite bathroom with double sinks, shower, and jacuzzi and a luxurious balcony overlooking the central valley and our large swimming pool.

Costa Rica has one of the lowest crime rates in Central America (equal to Boston, USA); and Atenas has one of the lowest crime rates in Costa Rica. Still, there is a security gate and friendly neighbors nearby for added security.

We have an excellent management team to provide you with tourist tips as well as handle any problems that might arise. The owners live year round 400 meters away from Casa Colibri.

Beautiful home, Very centrally located

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I along with another couple spent 8 days in Casa Colibri. For a long overdue retreat from our hectic work lives, this place was perfect for us. It proved very suited for two couples as we each had our own bedrooms and bath. The house turned out to be as beautiful as the pictures on the website. The views were breathtaking by day and at night we could actually see the stars in the sky and also enjoyed the twinkling city lights down in the valley below. The sound of the birds in the morning were so therapeutic that my wife posted them online for her friends to hear. The high altitude really made the weather ideal and comfortable. I for one do not like summer heat and even during the warmest time of day the ceiling fans made me feel cool and very comfortable. No AC was necessary.

We took day trips to Monteverde Cloud Forest and Jaco beach (only an hour drive away) where we ziplined and rode ATV’s. We were very pleased with the central location of the property. It was our first time in CR so we had many questions leading up to our stay. Charlie, the owner was extremely helpful in answering every question we had in detail. Whenever my wife and I travel, I get appointed as the designated trip coordinator and Charlie made my job much easier with all the info he provided. He even explained how to obtain a Costa Rican phone no at the airport that would work on our US iPhones. During the taxi ride to the house, he was in contact with us by phone to be sure our driver got us to our destination and to be sure he was present to greet us timely when we arrived.

This was our first experience renting a VRBO house in another country outside the US. We found it to be very clean and well-kept and stocked with all the basic kitchen utensils and other essentials throughout the house. We were particularly thankful for the blender in the kitchen since we use that to make our breakfast drinks and it saved us from having to pack that item which we always need to when staying in a hotel. During our stay, Charlie was attentive and quick to respond with any question or need that came up.

We have also been researching future retirement locations and heard that Atenas CR had been rated at the top of AARP’s list as Best Places to Retire abroad. I would say it lived up to expectations for all the reasons they mentioned. We found the local residents truly welcoming and friendly.

We would definitely choose to stay at this property again in the future.

Owner's Response: Brian, Thanks for the nice words. The people of Atenas really are amazing in that they don't try to be friendly and welcoming; it's just in their DNA! We hope to see you again soon. Maybe as a resident! Happy travels, Charlie and Gloria

The view, location, proximity to town all combined with the property to make a great vacation. The hosts were great. Provided us with as much useful information as we asked for.

Safe location and good communication through booking. Property wasn't clean upon arrival.

  • 3 of 5

Safe location with gated entry in a nice community. Property shows very well in pictures, but was moderately unkept and unclean upon arrival (coffee grounds in the coffee maker, full trash can in kitchen, dirty kitchen, wet laundry in the washer, someone's shirt on dryer, kids pool toys laying about).

Overall Atenas is a nice area and even though Charlie had to leave the country last minute, he had his neighbor fill in and show us around. Charlie was accommodating when we informed him of the broken hottub.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Capacitor went out on jacuzzi jets. Electrician came in and fixed it next day. Sorry I had to leave town for a family crisis and wasn't able to do a walk around inspection before your arrival, as I usually do.

A gorgeous, relaxing getaway in paradise

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this beautiful home. It was everything that was promised and more! It was myself and my husband (we stayed in the upstairs master bedroom with the balcony overlooking the pool and the mountains). And our 13 year old daughter, who stayed downstairs in the other bedroom. We all loved it.

We did a lot of relaxing. We read, we watched movies (netflix came in great on my husband's computer) I swam laps in the refreshing pool every morning, we got to know the neighborhood iquanas, and enjoyed the sun setting each night. We went on little day trips to Sarchi (art colony), to Grecia waterfalls, to the Atenas farmers market on Friday, to the Toledo Coffee Plantation. We spent six wonderful days there. We could have spent more. Thank you so much.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments. Atenas is surprisingly centrally located so I'm glad you got out to explore the nearby areas. But Atenas is also a great place to do just what you did: relax and enjoy the fabulous weather and the friendly wildlife. Hope to see you again. -Charlie & Gloria

We had a great trip, but a couple points were disappointing, particularly since we have young kids

  • 3 of 5

We spent 7 nights here as a part of our Costa Rica trip in early December. We greatly enjoyed our trip overall, and Atenas was in fact a very good launch point to explore from. The house was nice, in a beautiful location, and Charlie was very responsive to questions. That said, a couple points left us disappointed as a family of 4 with kiddos aged 9 and 7:

1) The second bedroom is isolated from the rest of the house. That is, while the bedroom is part of the main house structure, but entry is only available from the outside. The doors to it are keyed where the only way to open the door is to insert and turn a key to unlock and open. Exiting the house to go to the second bedroom is accomplished by turning a key to unlock a sliding door, going outside, then using a key to unlock the bedroom door. That meant that if our kids needed us in the night we would have had to (a) leave doors to the main part of the house and/or their bedroom unlocked, (b) lock the kids in at night and expect them to bang or scream so we could come if necessary or (c) give them keys and expect them to unlock doors in the night to make their way in. For most of our stay the gate to the main road next to the house was not working and remained fully open day and night. We decided to put one kid on the second bed in the master and the other kid on the downstairs couch. For many travelers this is likely not an issue at all, but for a family with younger kids it would have been nice to know.

2) We had hot water issues throughout our trip. We took 1/3 hot showers, 1/3 lukewarm to cool showers and 1/3 cold showers with no heat at all. It is a solar system with a propane backup however obviously something wasn't working right. We tried to make use of the outdoor jacuzzi once with a cool result and took a hot bath one night. Those choices ensured there was no hot water in the house the following 12+ hours. We reported the issue but were not sure how unusual this is during the rainy season. A first world problem to be sure, but a bummer to not enjoy the Jacuzzi and bath tub, as well as start our days with cold showers.

We enjoyed the trip overall. The house was nice and our kids loved using the pool. The layout of the house was also conducive to fun family game nights in the dining/living room. I'm sure our hot water and ant issues were temporary and a result of unfortunate timing on our part. If the layout works for a given family/travelers then we could recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments. To answer your question about how common it is for the sun not to shine enough to supply sufficient hot water during the rainy season, it's rare. Even in the worst month of the rainy season, Atenas gets blue sky sunrises, a 2-3 hour afternoon downpour and then a beautiful sunset. In the week before your stay, Costa Rica experienced its first hurricane in 163 years! That resulted in very unusual 24/7 cloudy skies. As far as the separate entrance for the downstairs bedroom, that provides a welcome measure of additional privacy. But that works best for our typical guests: other couples or adolescent children. Glad you enjoyed the area and the people of Atenas. -Charlie & Gloria
