HIBISCUS HOUSE is a beautiful, garden paradise in sunny Kapoho!
There is a lovely, relaxing tidal pond in the front yard to cool you on those warm Hawaiian days! The 3/4 acre grounds include towering coconut palms, bananas, African Tulip Trees, mangoes, Cook Pines, and plumeria.
This roomy home (upper unit) boasts a spacious wrap-around covered lanai from which to enjoy the garden views and new Weber grill. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a dining area and large living room with vaulted ceilings. The master bedroom has a King-sized bed with tiled bathroom. The other 2 bedrooms have queen size beds. A second bath is off the hall. The bathrooms were remodeled in 2012 and are fully tiled. With ample sized common areas and all the amenities for gourmet cooking, the home is suited either for entertaining or for a quiet romantic getaway. Watch the large screen HD satellite TV, or DVDs or Netflix movies. Fall asleep to the sound of the ocean waves or relax on the lanai after a day of snorkeling, swimming with turtles or dolphins, or hiking or lava viewing.
The home is a 3 minute walk from the Kapoho Tidepools: a beautiful, protected coral reef which has the best snorkeling, skin diving, and swimming in the area. The reef protects swimmers from big waves and creates safe swimming even for young children and holds beautiful schools of tropical fish and colorful coral. A snorkeler's paradise!
Sunny Kapoho retains the ambience of 'Old Hawaii'. Situated on the eastern coast of the Big Island, away from major tourist development, Kapoho still holds the serenity and unmarred beauty of an island paradise.
There are numerous day-trip adventures to the Hot Ponds, Kileaua Volcano, Hilo town, Akaka Falls, botanical gardens, farmer's markets and delightful restaurants. Or you can just kick back and escape to the paradise and tranquility that is Hawaii.
For a family reunion or large group, you can rent the downstairs as well for a total of six bedrooms and four bathrooms. As us about discounted rates for the whole house. And KIDS 17 and under STAY FREE!

In December 2002, my family stayed in this house for vacation. The land is magical and the sound of the waves, the incredible tide pools, the volcano, and hanging out all night on the lanai listening to music and playing games made it the most relaxing vacation we have ever known. The kids couldn't get enough of jumping in the pond, bringing coconuts to us from the yard to crack open and swimming in the tide pools. When I learned the house was for sale, I got a couple of friends together and we jumped in.
Convenient access to wonderful snorkeling at the tide pools is top of the list. The Hot Pond, lava viewing, & swimming at Richardson's Ocean Beach in Hilo are both fun and relaxing. I love the Farmers Markets for fresh fruit,
We return once or twice a year and always use the time to upgrade the amenities to make the experience more relaxing and luxurious for our guests. The linens are completely changed out every year. All the beds are new, lighting and ceiling fans are new as are ALL the appliances.
We hope you stay with us and we'll share the secrets of magical East Hawaii. We are adding more fruit trees this year and plan to tile both bathrooms and refinish the lanai.
Just a quick note to say we got in last night and all is well in your beautiful
vacation paradise. Haven't left the house yet but will check out the tide pools
this afternoon. Thanks for everything!
We are just back from 12 days at Hibiscus House. It was our 4th visit and we keep on returning because, having tried a number of houses in Kapoho and elsewhere on the island, this is the place we enjoy most. The landscaping is very beautiful with an abundance of flowering trees and shrubs, the yard is large and the tide pool warm and very relaxing. We liked the new rock wall around it. The house itself is comfortable, spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen comes with everything you need for food prep.We spend all our time out on the huge lanai. There's enough space that, with a number of family members visiting, you can still find a quiet place to read.
This time we were all adults but we have visited with children and the place works very well for all them too.
We so appreciate our holidays at this special home and hope to return
Hibiscus house is a WONDERFUL vacation rental and an excellent value that a wide variety of people would really enjoy! It is clean, very well appointed, and super comfortable. We loved coming back to this special home after our day trips exploring beautiful east Hawaii. We have so many great memories.... the pond and tropical flowers in the yard, walking to the famous Kapoho tide pools, and falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle and the warm tropical night time showers. This home has so much to offer, we can't wait to come back. This one is a keeper!
We stayed at the Hibiscus House March 11-15, 2015 with my husband and two sons who are 6 and 8. The house was exactly what we were looking for. The recent renovations of the kitchen and flooring were beautifully done. There was tonnes of room for the four of us and loved the kitchen and living room along with the large wrap around deck. The tide pools down the block were amazing, our boys loved them and started out sticking close to us when snorkelling and soon were exploring on their own. Rebecca provided some great insight into things to do and see, we did as many as we could in 5 days but also took the time to relax. Bill was also an excellent host from down the road who provided us with some additional ideas and insight for our adventures. Every night our boys ended the day in the tide pool in the yard. They loved the warmth and chasing the fish and lobsters (type of crayfish I think but they thought they were lobsters who were missing their claws). The weather was cloudy all 5 days but was the same on other side of the island as well and never stopped us. Not having AC was never an issue, we left the big patio doors open during the day and the house was cool and comfortable. I loved the noises at night though one of my sons said he slept the first night with his eye open (??) but they never mentioned a thing again and they slept soundly each night. We had so much fun and would definitely stay again. There were two binders with suggestions for things to do and see, one was more up to date than the other and the older one must have been left outside or had a drink spilled on a few pages as they were hard to read. Would recommend updating the second binder as it was a great guide for us. Thank you for sharing your house with us.
4.5 stars. We enjoyed staying at Hibiscus House. If you go to the Big Island, you are missing out if you only stay near Kona. The location was perfect for exploring Volcano National Park, the tide pools right down the street and the natural beauty of the rainforest. Can't say enough about the beautiful and easy snorkeling 5 minutes away on foot. Be ready for an adventure, this part of the island is amazing, but not touristy-no resorts here! We rented the top floor of the house, and it was as shown in the pictures. There is no a/c but the house cools off when all the windows and doors are open. This lets in the natural breezes and also the sound of tiny coquis frogs loudly chirping at night. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The sleeping arrangements worked for six of us, the kitchen was stocked with what you need to cook, and the huge lanai was my favorite part of the house. We utilized the large table on the lanai for every meal and coffee early in the morning. The kids spent time picking tropical fruits and playing in the warm tide pool in the yard. The house is carpeted (not the kitchen) and I wish it had tile instead. I don't think it was damp because we were careful to remove shoes and rain gear outside, but with the humidity, it just felt like it. That is a small suggestion for future updates, but it did not hinder our enjoyment or fun! We would stay here again.
My teen boys, husband and myself all enjoyed our time at Hibiscus House. It was wonderful being surrounded by the beautiful foliage on the property, being able to have breakfast out on the wrap around porch, and being greeted by sun fun and cheery green geckos every time we went outside. The tide pools just a few minutes walk had the best coral that we saw during the week on the island. Would highly recommend though, for best snorkeling, be sure to check the tides and go when it's mid or high tide. We went at low tide one time and scrapped our knees and hands quite a bit. Just google "tide chart for kapoho" and choose the surf-forcast.com option and it will give you exactly where the tide is right then.
We ended up going to the Kona side of the island when a storm came and stayed for a few days and stayed in a hotel...and we all realized how much we really had it good at Hibiscus House. Each of us made a comment or two about how we wish we could have brought Hibiscus House with us instead of cramming us in the hotel. And when we got back a few days later, my youngest headed off to bed saying "I'm so glad I'm going to get to sleep in my bed again".
It was a lifesaver (to our savings) to be able to cook a lot of our meals "at home" instead of eating out all the time. My 16 yr old even thanked us for not having to waste money on eating greasy food a lot of the time, and saving us from having to spend time trying to agree on where to eat every meal (makes a mother proud that he actually feels this way!)
We took this trip because my oldest is going to be a senior next year and we wanted to take a "big" trip before he goes off to college, somewhere that we could make some life memories with our boys, and to allow them to maybe bond (they usually fight or ignore each other). By staying at Hibiscus House they were able to have their own space (rooms) which allowed for them to spend their time snorkeling at the local tide pools, and at other sight seeing trips actually having fun together. That in it's own was worth staying here.
We loved having extra snorkeling gear when the water shoes I brought fell apart, having all the towels we needed already at the house (saved room in luggage), binoculars to use to see the birds and scenery during our trip, and great info/maps on things to do while there.
I would HIGHLY recommend this house! Oh, and it was much cheaper to fly into Hilo Airport than into Kona, by A LOT (at least when we went).
We saw many many fish at the nearby Wai'Opae tide pools. The house was very comfortable for 6 people. The owner has thought of everything to keep her guests healthy and happy. We also drove to Kilueia volcano, had fun in Hilo, and went to swim with the dolphins, who weren't there, but we loved the beach anyway. And the tide pool in the yard was warmish and clean. What a great New Year celebration for us! Mahalo!
Beautiful hot ponds (geothermal) in State Park 1-1/2 miles! Historic and still active Kilauea volcano is just a short drive away. Visit ancient crater and watch molten lava pouring into the Pacific Ocean (when Pele allows). The house has 3/4 acres of landscaped grounds to explore. The tidal pond in the yard is a serene oasis & is a perfect way to cool down in the late afternoon. We have Farmer's markets that are not to be missed! You can buy tropical flowers, fruits & vegetables, local honey and beautiful jewelry, batiks, crystals, wood carvings, and basketry of the Islands. Orchid nurseries close by, museums in HIlo. Waterfalls 1/2 hour away.
