Great Bang for the buck

  • 4 of 5

After reading the only review on this site, I was a little concerned. However, having rented several beach cottages in the past, we looked at it as an adventure. The house is an older beach cottage, and was immaculately clean. Lots of videos, wifi, etc for rainy days. Close to everything in Pacific beach. Bathrooms completely renovated, extremely useful kitchen. However I would bring some plastic utensils, as they are in short supply. When we first walked in, we noticed the uneven floors, however they are not a safety hazard. Also after about the third glass of Washington wine, they pretty much evened out, haaa... We (Me, Spouse, Mother in Law, and Pup) had a great time and the home was perfect for the cost. I have stayed in a LOT worse for a LOT more $ in the past (Including the military resort in Pac Beach), and we intend to continue to come here in the future. Great bang for the buck....

Not worth the money!

  • 1 of 5

This place is disgusting and unsafe to say the least! When we arrived the first thing we noticed is the secondary door will not close and therefore will not lock. We starting unpacking in the bedrooms and discovered dirty underwear in one of the bedrooms and candy and toys in another bedroom. Later in the day we dropped something on the main room floor and discovered that the carpets were filthy. We found a vacuum and started to try and clean the floors but the belt in the vacuum burned up and now the place smelled like burning rubber. We went back to the rental office to inquire about getting a vacuum, broom.. anything to clean the floors with but when we got to the office, the man at the desk was partaking in an adult beverage. We brought up our issues and he really didn't seem to care one way or the other. He told us that he would have the owner contact us and have someone come out and "vacuum". We still have not talked to the owner, only phone tag nor did the floor ever get vacuumed.

In the kitchen we found knives and straight blades and other sharp objects in various drawers and locations. This was not a safe environment for a family with children. We found 1/2 stick old butter on one of the shelves as well. I was aware that the listing stated that the floors were uneven.... but there is a difference between uneven and walking on rolling hills. If you have any kind of a balance issue or vertigo be careful of this house. Maybe if you had planned on camping and sleeping on the ground but the campgrounds were full...then maybe you'd be ok renting this place.

Owner's Response: Initially I did not know how to respond to this review, as I was taken quite aback by it. Salty Dog is exactly as described, but I will assume that this guest was surprised that it was an older (but clean) home. I will say this home has a tremendous following of guests that return year after year, and some several times a year. If you are looking for an affordable home with great proximity to the beach, this is it! A GREAT place for clam digging! I am not certain what they found "Unsafe" perhaps the fact that the interior door to the entry way did not lock? How many locking front doors do you need? It does however close. (when you enter the home there is initially a small vestibule, a mud room of sorts. In winter it serves to keep the cold and rain out of the living room. It was the door from this mud room into the living room that they were referencing) I also believe they were surprised by the wavy floors (although we do mention them in the description) Perhaps they did not fully read the description until after they were in the home? It is more noticeable in the West bedroom than any other room in the home. Management does inspect each home prior to every arrival. This is to insure everything is clean and in working order. It is unfortunate that the vacuum belt broke during their stay. When these guests came to the office, they were told someone would be by shortly. They also received a telephone message from me with a half hour window in which they could expect someone (which was within an hour of their complaint) However, when management arrived with the vacuum, the group staying at the home could be seen leaving. (we don't enter the home when no one is there, for obvious reasons) I later learned that the gentleman at the desk was informed by a man from this group that they had already vacuumed, and there was no need for us to vacuum again. Oh, and that "Adult Beverage"? Was one of those energy drinks that everyone drinks these days. This reservation was placed less than 24 hours prior to their arrival. It was a busy weekend (we were completely booked in all of the 20+ homes we manage) I believe they reserved this home in haste, only seeing the price and proximity to the beach, and were in fact disappointed with their purchase. If you ever have ANY questions about the properties we manage, please call prior to reserving. We take pride in answering your questions with complete honesty.
