Le Beau Balcon is ideally situated in the charming Old Town of Villefranche: a less than 5 minute walk to the waterfront and beach, steps from the shops and restaurants, and a short distance to the world-renowned French language institute, Institut Français. The apartment was completely renovated- down to the 600 year-old stone walls- in 2009. It would have been the ‘bourgeois apartment’ of its day, as it is on the first floor (one flight up from the street). It has high ceilings and beautiful hand-made plaster molding (which we painstakingly preserved). The balcony faces the sea and has a wonderful view that fills the space with light and sun. The décor is old world French, filled with antiques and chandeliers, but the apartment has all of the modern conveniences.

About the area: Villefranche-sur-Mer is a traditional Niçoise fishing village dating back to 1295 and anchored by two cosmopolitan cities on either side: Nice to the west and Monaco to the east. One could not speak about Villefranche without exclaiming its physical beauty. Surrounding its large, natural (and world famous) bay are cliffs and steep hillsides, brimming with olive and citrus trees, Mediterranean pines, and bougainvillea flowering plants. This lush vegetation meets the water’s edge, where the shades of blue are as dazzling as a sapphire necklace. The bay of Villefranche is surrounded by two of the most beautiful Caps in the Mediterranean: Cap Ferrat and Cap de Nice. These stunning limestone peninsulas- sprinkled with luxurious villas and lavish gardens- protect and embrace our bay. Amidst all of this is the charming village, hugging the coastline with colorful buildings. During a stroll through the maze-like streets of the Old Town, you will see beautiful balconies decorated with potted plants, fresh laundry flapping in the sea breeze, and hear the sounds of church bells and music wafting through the corridors. And of course, what description of Villefranche would be complete without mentioning the boating scene! Watching the comings and goings- from cruise ships to yachts to fishing boats- could be a full time occupation!

There is no shortage of things to do during your stay! And we are always happy to make recommendations. That said, part of the pleasure of being here is taking in the lifestyle of the village and the area: getting up and going for a walk or swim at the beach, shopping at the fresh markets (on Wednesdays and Saturdays), sitting on your balcony and admiring the beautiful scenery, exploring the village and all of its little quarters... Guests frequently come with a long list of all the things they will do, and then a couple of days into the trip, they decide to reduce the list and just enjoy the lifestyle.

  • The main bath is very spacious and has a window opening on to the pedestrian street of rue Volti. There is a large soaking tub with a shower, a toilet, and a large sink with lots of counter space, excellent lights, and lots of storage. The washing machine is also in the bathroom. Clothes lines are just outside the window for easy hanging of your laundry and it smells wonderful after a few hours in the sun. In addition, there is a second bathroom with a toilet, sink, and storage. Both toilets are equipped with douchettes (a spray nozzle instead of a bidet). The bathroom counter is marble and the large mirror cabinets open for storage inside. There is a chandelier in the bathroom for romantic mood lighting plus bright halogen lights over the mirror. The window has a linen curtain and shutters for privacy.

  • The bedroom has an excellent queen sized bed from Lit de France, and both sides of the bed have tables and reading lights. There is a lot of closet space (hanging and drawer) and storage for suitcases. Original art from local artists adorn the walls and an antique chandelier provides romantic lighting. There are black-out curtains, tastefully done, plus linen curtains and shutters. The bedroom window opens onto a quiet pedestrian street. There is also a sofa bed in the living room. It is intended for two people traveling independently, or for a young or grown child. It is not intended for two couples or for a couple with two children.

Le Beau Balcon is ideally located in the heart of the Old Town. We do want you to be aware that there are church bells- quite lovely, but if you don't like them, we want you to know you are close by! They ring from 7 a.m to 9 p.m. each day. The apartment is the first floor of the building that you enter on rue Volti. We own all three of the apartments in this building, and each one is unique from the others (although all are one bedroom and one or one and a half bath). The street door ensures complete privacy and security for these apartments.

We had a wonderful stay at Le Beau Balcon this summer.

Villefranche is an idyllic location, and the apartment couldn't have been better situated or more beautifully appointed.

Shelley and her team gave us a truly warm welcome.

We hope to return to this magical spot on the Riviera again.

A slice of village life

We stayed here for two months in winter; very comfortable flat (excellent heating system) with outstanding balcony where we could sit and read and watch the world go by. Staying here gave us a wonderful glimpse into the old town community and culture; we could even pretend to belong here. The flat has the best kitchen (sharp knives, good quality cookware) we've ever rented. Shelley thinks of the little things that really make the place comfortable - good reading lamps, light throw blankets to keep you warm when reading, nice artwork, basic office supplies. We will be back!

A beautiful apartment in great location

We spent a lovely week at the Beau Balcon apartment right in the heart of old town Villefranche. The view from the balcony is beautiful and the mood changes with the light from early morning to late at night. The church bells gently reminding you of the passing time.

Accommodation is clean and comfortable and reflects Shelley's keen eye for quality and taste. A very French experience.

Villefranche is ideally positioned for visiting all the highlights of the region. Shelley provides a great personalised guide to the area with insider tips for the best things to do.

We used the local buses and trains that are remarkably good value and spent time walking around the beautiful coastal paths and famous Caps.

Many good quality restaurants in the village and down by the harbour.

Our tips for walking, all explained in detail by Shelley's guide:

Around Cap Ferrat taking in the Port of St Jean Cap Ferrat. We also walked the coastal path into Nice and had lunch in Le Local near the Port.

We also walked up to EZE village from the train station. Very hard work in the heat but well worth the effort. Had lunch in Nid D'Aigile. Also cocktails on the terrace of Chateau Eza. Breathtaking views. Then walked all the way down again.

Got exceptional shots of Villefranche bay from the Moyenne Corniche after getting the bus to Col Villefranche then walking to the panorama for about 1Km. Walked down the 600 steps back to Villefranche.

To end our stay we spent the day on Cap Ferrat and visited the fabulous Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild. So beautiful.

We have been very pleased with our stay and this is a great property. Nice to watch the tourists taking photos up and down the Rue de May whilst sipping cocktails on the balcony. We must be in many people's holiday snaps.

Superb Apartment in a Superb French Village

We travel all over and prefer to rent apartments instead of staying in hotels. Over the years we learned what to expect and accept from rentals as a visitor in a foreign country. That did not apply to Le Beau Balcon...stay in one of Shelley's apartments and you will think you have died and gone to heaven. We stayed here for 2 weeks in March. We had big, sparkling clean, windows and french doors for views and lots of natural light in addition to the lovely light fixtures and chandeliers providing so much light after dark. Bathroom was huge with super water pressure and a washing machine. Bed was so comfortable and linens so soft, it was hard to get up and leave it in the mornings.

Kitchen was equipped with everything, dishwasher, microwave, full size refrigerator, great stove, plenty of pots, pans, cooking utensils and even sharp knives for meal preparations. Very french and beautiful yet comfortable and functional furnishings and real art on the walls. TV with great reception, excellent WiFi, stereo for music, cell phone with skype. Balcony with flowers, plants, table and chairs. Guide books, maps, bus schedules, restaurant and shopping and hiking info are all in the apartment.

Loved location in Villefranche because a car was not necessary. Short walk to inexpensive, reliable buses and trains to anywhere in France or Italy. 30 minute walk to Nice or 5 minute bus ride. Many beautiful walks and hikes from the apt. Wonderful restaurants, grocers, patisseries in Villefranche, We liked being in this lovely village, but having Nice and all it has to offer so close.

As others have said below, Shelley is the best. Always available on her cell, she will help with problems, directions, information, anything. She is the Rick Steves of this part of France knowing all the places and restaurants you would have missed if she didn't tell you about them...ask for and take her advice on everything. Also, if you can find something missing in this apt that you need, which I doubt, but if you do, you only have to call Shelley.

All Shelley's apartments are special, but without her, they would just be really nice apartments. Suffice it to say, we have already booked again for next year.

Le Beau Balcon : What a wonderful place to stay !

My Husband and I stayed at this lovely apartment in July 2011.

I read all the reviews before booking and now I want to write my own review,because we had such a super time whilst we were there, however I,m finding it very difficult to mention something that hasnt already been said about Beau Balcon and Shelley, the owner.

So read the other reviews, they,re all true and I recommend you book it now especially if your looking for somewhere romantic to stay !

Best memory for me is sitting on the balcony looking over the rooftops to the sea, with the boats bobbing up and down and watching people going about their day.

As it was July when we stayed here my husband was concerned that there was no air con. Dont worry about that, there were 3 fans in the apartment, we only used one of them and we didnt need that all the time. The apartment has two beautiful long french windows and is not stuffy at all.

I love to sunbathe and the beach is a 10 min walk from the apartment. On route you can pick up some beach chairs that Shelley has provided, they,re behind one of her other apartments,Shelley will tell you where to go and there you are set for the day !

Shelley has lots of suggestions for thing to do. We did a walk up the hillside to Eze village, took almost an hour, but worth it for the views.

We used public transport a lot of the time when we were in Villefranche, its very cheap and reliable no need for a car. The tourist information centre is only about 5 mins walk away , they speak good english and are very helpful with timetables and pointing you in the right direction !

Dont bother with a taxi from the airport (Nice) as long as you are happy to lift your case on and off the bus a couple of times its worth it for the euros you will save. Shelley will tell you which stops to get on and off at . She arranged to meet us in Villefranche when we arrived on the Saturday morning and guided us to Beau Balcon which is less than 10mins walk from the bus stop.

Beau Balcon is comfortable, its spacious its clean, it has two loos, english sky tv, a phone that you can call landlines on for free and wi fi, so take your laptop go on Shelleys website : and see if you can locate her other properties while you are there. I,m sure you will want to stay in all of them !

The charisma of the Old Town and Beau Balcon is a lovely feeling, it truly is a riviera experience, go there !

Le Beau Balcon exceeds all expectations

Le Beau Balcon and Villefranche-sur-Mer were everything we could have wished for to make our one month stay in France a success. We have a business that we run via computer, skype and telephone and we decided to transplant our business to the south of France for the month of March.

Shelley's properties immediately stood out in our search for the perfect place and we selected Le Beau Balcon because of its superb location in the old town and because it had all the services necessary to conduct our business, not to mention that it is a fabulous well-appointed apartment in a 600 year old building that is completely renovated.

It goes without saying that the apartment is absolutely beautiful. Shelley has a flair for interior design and it was beautifully decorated, cozy, had an excellent bed and lots of storage space creatively designed. I think what we loved the most was getting up in the morning to buy a fresh baguette from the boulangerie just steps away and then enjoying this with a cup of coffee on the lovely wrought iron balcony overlooking the old town and the Mediterranean.

The location is absolutely ideal - everything that we needed was within walking distance. Half the fun was just walking around the old town and exploring the cobblestoned streets, the cafes, the scenic waterfront and sipping wine and eating olives in the quaint wine bar. The French people were very welcoming and we loved practicing our French.

The bus and train were each just a short walk away and we took many wonderful excursions to Nice, Monaco, Menton and into the mountains. Shelley warned us before we came that there would be so much to do and see just in Villefranche that we might not want to spend a lot of time away from the town - and she was right! We felt completely at home here and felt like it was our second home for the month!

What made our stay most special was Shelley herself. She provides exemplary service to her guests and ensures that no detail is overlooked. From the welcome flowers, wine and groceries upon arrival to the evening soiree she hosted for her guests, Shelley is always available to look after every need - even travel arrangements!

If you are looking for a wonderful, romantic destination in a fabulous apartment in a great location - look no further than one of Shelley's beautiful properties in Villefranche-sur-Mer. She'll make your stay so special that you will not want to leave! See you next year Shelley! Bob & Caron

Le Beau Balcon is located in the heart of the Old Town. Villefranche is nestled between Nice and Monaco (10 minutes from Vieux Nice, 20-25 minutes from Monaco). Although surrounded by a diverse, exciting cosmopolitan environment, it is still an authentic Niçoise village. I know, I live here, and it's hard to believe it is still that way-- wonderful! Within close and easy access are Antibes, Cannes, St. Paul de Vence, Grasse, Mougins, and just a bit further, St. Tropez, Ramatuelle, Bormes les Mimosas, or Aix, Arles, Avignon and all the villages of Provence. Take a ferry from Nice Port to Corsica (3 hours on the fast ferry), or head to Italy and visit Ventimiglia, San Remo, the Vallee de Roya, Portofino, Cinque Terre... But if you stay in Villefranche and the neighboring towns of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, St. Jean Cap Ferrat, Eze, and La Turbie, you'll exhaust a week or more just exploring and enjoying these lovely villages. Most of these sites are easy to access without a car. And if you are here to attend the French language institute, Institut Français, it is a 10 minute walk away.

We require a 40% deposit of the total booking price by wire or check, and the balance is due 2 months prior to arrival. A security deposit equivalent to 500€ will be collected upon arrival in euros, dollars, or pounds and returned prior to departure. A cleaning fee of 90€ will be collected upon arrival in cash. If you stay multiple weeks, there is a mandatory weekly cleaning fee of 80€.
