About Elizabeth & Jim

We have been visiting the Hawaiian islands together since 2001 and fell in love with the Big Island on our first visit! We are grateful to have this little retreat and to be able to share it with others. We hope you enjoy the island as much as we do!

Elizabeth & Jim purchased this condo in 2013

Why Elizabeth & Jim chose Kona Coast

We love this condo for its proximity to so many lovely places. It is within a very short distance to Banyans (surfing), White Sands (boogie boarding), and Kahalu'u (snorkeling) beaches. We can also walk into Kona and have a meal, listen to music or just watch the passers-by. We like to go to the farmers market in town to get fresh produce and flowers. The Kona Pier is a wonderful place to swim, or rent paddle boards and kayaks.

What makes this condo unique

We have included everything we need for a comfortable stay when we are on the island. We hope you find everything you need, too!

First time visitor to Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful experience at the Kona Bali Kai condo on this, my first trip to Hawaii. The condo is conveniently located near beaches and downtown Kona yet quiet, with easy parking. I loved walking across the street to watch surfers, and even saw sea turtles there. Lawn chairs, Barbecue, pool and Jacuzzi are available at the main facility.

The condo is clean, tastefully furnished with Hawaiian theme art and very welcoming. Both sofa bed and mattress in bedroom were most comfortable. Kitchen cookware, knives and dishes are first rate. It was great to make morning tea or coffee, cut up fruit (daily papaya!) and eat on the lanai, watching the joggers and walkers go by on Ali’i Drive below. Snorkeling equipment, sling foldout chairs, even sunscreen and aloe vera were available and washer and dryer in the condo made for easy cleanup after the beach.

The guest book contains tips on local beaches, favorite restaurants and cards of local vendors. I especially enjoyed massages from Aloha Massage students – good practitioners at reasonable rates - and shave ice from One Aloha Shave Ice Co.

I would heartily recommend this condo and intend to return there my very next visit to the Big Island, which I hope will be soon. Thank you, Jim for the excellent care you provide your guests.

Thanks for my amazing Hawaiian holiday!

  • 5 of 5

The condo at Kona Bali Kai was just the right place for my holiday. We cooked in most nights, and I really liked the high quality cookware they had (nothing flimsy or cheap, and the knives were sharp), which made the preparation easy - there was even a blender for my culinary experiment with breadfruit!

Da Poki Shack - right across the street- was amazing for lunch too, long lines, but well worth it and so convenient. We also took advantage of the 2 BBQ grills (out on the grass by the water) to grill dinner, sit in lawn chairs and watch the sunset. So rejuvenating!

This condo was clean, quiet (no loud parties), and convenient. We loved the location, because we had access to swimming in either direction - White Sands Beach to the south, and "downtown" Kona to the north. Being so close to town was nice; we enjoyed spending time at Daylight Mind, enjoying an iced tea and free WiFi over the ocean. We also took advantage of the WiFi in the condo to stream movies to the TV in the evening, or to surf the web with my morning coffee on the little lanai out front.

Kona Bali Kai is convenient to everything; it's an easy drive up to the highway, whether we were headed to the Southern tip, over to Hilo, or North to the harbor. We had a wonderful trip, thanks Jim and Elizabeth for making it so easy!

Great escape!

  • 5 of 5

This clean, cute, and cozy one-bedroom condo is perfect for a get-away to Kona. The pull-out couch is very comfy, too. Just a short hop to "downtown" Kona and many beaches, it's the perfect base camp. The kitchen is well-equipped, and there is a beautiful wooden counter top. Also, it was very convenient to have a washer/dryer right in the condo unit. I would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend it!

Perfect home base away from the crowds, close to the sea, easy access to the whole island

  • 3 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Kona Bali Kai. The location was perfect. We used the common area BBQ across the street right on the beach and enjoyed watching the sunset over Banyan's surf area as we ate. It is easy to get out of town from this location without having to go through the busy rush of the main tourist centre. The apartment is well appointed with a great island in the kitchen for eating at and just hanging out around. There were beach chairs and boogie boards and a cooler. The in-suite laundry was great and I was so thankful to be able to do my laundry while I was on holidays. The pool area is very well maintained and we spent a lot of time reading in the sunshine. I definitely miss that pool area! We would definitely stay here again on a return trip. I would recommend that an AC unit be placed in the bedroom as we found it too hot to sleep in there and moved onto the pull out in the living room. There is AC in the main area, but it is on a one hour timer, which is a little short when you need the AC overnight. I recommend that the timer be changed so that the AC can be left on for longer stints. But all in all, we loved the apartment and it felt like home. On the day we left we had a late flight and we were worried about our chocolate covered mac nuts melting in our car. Jim was kind enough to let us leave our luggage in the unit until we had to go to the airport as they did not have someone checking in the day of our departure. That was such a relief to us and was very much appreciated. This apartment is really your best value for the price point that I think you will find anywhere in Hawaii. Mahalo:)

Great location

  • 1 of 5

The property itself was in a good location and the owners are fabulous, honest people. The pool across the road was nice. Out of the owners control, the property was crawling with cockroaches. It was obviously an issue with the building as someone had left roach traps at our door and the owners had a guy come in and spray. We stayed there seven of our fifteen nights until we could find other accommodations. If you have any mobility issues there is no elevator and the unit is top floor so lots of stairs. Sorry for being negative. Just giving honest feedback. The owners did give us a refund of the remainder of days not used.

Owner's Response: We are deeply concerned about the report of roaches in the building and our unit. In our 3+ years of owning the unit we have not seen any signs or heard any complaints of roaches until this spring. We are working with the site manager and doing our best to resolve this. We truly regret the inconvenience that this intolerable issue has caused.

Really 3.5 Stars

  • 3 of 5

Overall we were happy with the Bali Kai, but we probably wouldn't stay there again.

*Great location! Like really great, perfect area to access the most frequently visited parts of Kona. Easy drive south to the volcano, east to Hilo, and north to Waimea.

*Well stocked kitchen. We cooked a lot and the pantry was well stocked to accommodate our needs.

*Da Poke Shack--right next door!

*Beaches--several great spots in walking distance

*Great value

*Awesome having a washer and dryer

*AC only works on single hour timer. The room stays mostly cool at nights, but it was 85-87 degrees ever day--we needed the AC to be more active.

*AC is on the other side of the apartment as the bedroom. We are used to sleeping in a cool bedroom 65-75 degrees. The bedroom would not get to 75 degrees until around 1-2 AM (even with the AC constantly running).

*Cockroaches--they are a reality of HI, but no traps and they were EVERYWHERE all over the silverware and cookware.

*Cleanliness--apartment was mostly clean, but the shower curtain was disgusting and we had to wash it before we used the shower.

*Expectations--the apartment photographs like a 4-star accommodation, but it is closer to a 3-star accommodation

Long story short

Great budget option, if you aren't bothered by heat and bugs you will probably be fine.
