We have been visiting the Hawaiian islands together since 2001 and fell in love with the Big Island on our first visit! We are grateful to have this little retreat and to be able to share it with others. We hope you enjoy the island as much as we do!
Elizabeth & Jim purchased this condo in 2013
We love this condo for its proximity to so many lovely places. It is within a very short distance to Banyans (surfing), White Sands (boogie boarding), and Kahalu'u (snorkeling) beaches. We can also walk into Kona and have a meal, listen to music or just watch the passers-by. We like to go to the farmers market in town to get fresh produce and flowers. The Kona Pier is a wonderful place to swim, or rent paddle boards and kayaks.
We have included everything we need for a comfortable stay when we are on the island. We hope you find everything you need, too!
We really enjoyed our stay at Kona Bali Kai. The location was perfect. We used the common area BBQ across the street right on the beach and enjoyed watching the sunset over Banyan's surf area as we ate. It is easy to get out of town from this location without having to go through the busy rush of the main tourist centre. The apartment is well appointed with a great island in the kitchen for eating at and just hanging out around. There were beach chairs and boogie boards and a cooler. The in-suite laundry was great and I was so thankful to be able to do my laundry while I was on holidays. The pool area is very well maintained and we spent a lot of time reading in the sunshine. I definitely miss that pool area! We would definitely stay here again on a return trip. I would recommend that an AC unit be placed in the bedroom as we found it too hot to sleep in there and moved onto the pull out in the living room. There is AC in the main area, but it is on a one hour timer, which is a little short when you need the AC overnight. I recommend that the timer be changed so that the AC can be left on for longer stints. But all in all, we loved the apartment and it felt like home. On the day we left we had a late flight and we were worried about our chocolate covered mac nuts melting in our car. Jim was kind enough to let us leave our luggage in the unit until we had to go to the airport as they did not have someone checking in the day of our departure. That was such a relief to us and was very much appreciated. This apartment is really your best value for the price point that I think you will find anywhere in Hawaii. Mahalo:)
The property itself was in a good location and the owners are fabulous, honest people. The pool across the road was nice. Out of the owners control, the property was crawling with cockroaches. It was obviously an issue with the building as someone had left roach traps at our door and the owners had a guy come in and spray. We stayed there seven of our fifteen nights until we could find other accommodations. If you have any mobility issues there is no elevator and the unit is top floor so lots of stairs. Sorry for being negative. Just giving honest feedback. The owners did give us a refund of the remainder of days not used.
Overall we were happy with the Bali Kai, but we probably wouldn't stay there again.
*Great location! Like really great, perfect area to access the most frequently visited parts of Kona. Easy drive south to the volcano, east to Hilo, and north to Waimea.
*Well stocked kitchen. We cooked a lot and the pantry was well stocked to accommodate our needs.
*Da Poke Shack--right next door!
*Beaches--several great spots in walking distance
*Awesome having a washer and dryer
*AC only works on single hour timer. The room stays mostly cool at nights, but it was 85-87 degrees ever day--we needed the AC to be more active.
*AC is on the other side of the apartment as the bedroom. We are used to sleeping in a cool bedroom 65-75 degrees. The bedroom would not get to 75 degrees until around 1-2 AM (even with the AC constantly running).
*Cockroaches--they are a reality of HI, but no traps and they were EVERYWHERE all over the silverware and cookware.
*Cleanliness--apartment was mostly clean, but the shower curtain was disgusting and we had to wash it before we used the shower.
*Expectations--the apartment photographs like a 4-star accommodation, but it is closer to a 3-star accommodation
Long story short
Great budget option, if you aren't bothered by heat and bugs you will probably be fine.
My husband and I rented this condo for 16 nights and used it as our home base to explore the entire island. It is located right on Ali'i Drive, across the street from the ocean. While there is no direct view of the water from the unit, we would simply walk across the street to watch the amazing nightly sunsets or to lounge by the ocean during the day. The heart of Kona Town is located a little over 2 1/2 miles away. The surf spots, Banyans and Lymans are a close walking distance, great if you are a surfer like my husband.
The kitchen has the basics needed to cook most meals. The refrigerator is small and appears old. It leaks water quite a bit, but it was sufficient for our needs.
The queen bed was very comfortable and clean. There were plenty of sheets available if you stay as long as we did and wish to have a clean set of sheets. There were also plenty of bath towels and beach towels available too. There is an air conditioning unit located in the living room on a timer. It was perfect to set when we got home in the evenings to help cool the unit down. Also there are fans available in the bedroom. There is a small cooler there for your use, which was great for short beach trips. Having a washer and dryer in the unit came in very handy. Be aware, when we were there, it only washed in HOT water, regardless of the water temp you chose on the machine. (Which we found out the hard way). But we were still grateful to have one in the house. We just did cold water items in the sink. The unit is located on the top floor, while the stairs were not an issue for either of us, it is something to keep in mind as there are 30 + stairs. We found the complex nice and the neighbors very friendly. Parking is easy, just remember to put the parking pass from the front desk on your dash each night, or you will find a warning note on your car the next day. (Security does regular visits around the property). The poke shack is across the street , while pricey, very tasty! Our favorite dinner was at Umeke on Kaiwi St.
We would gladly come back and rent this place again. The price and location were perfect for us and allowed us to have a long vacation on the island we love.
Thank you to owners Jim and Elizabeth, your condo was wonderful and we appreciated your quick responses to our inquiries.
My husband and I spent a week in the condo in early March. It was exactly what we were hoping for and the property met or exceeded our expectations. We felt so at home. We found the property to be very clean and conveniently located to both beaches and downtown. We had complete access to the beach via the larger part of the complex across the street and found the staff there to be more than helpful.
The property is located on Ali'i Drive, which is a main route through town (it's the touristy road). There was quiet a bit of road noise on the front side of the building as to be expected between 8-5 during the week. There was a lot of foot traffic too as while there is a lot of auto traffic, its still a very accessible road for joggers and walkers. But hey - you are in Hawaii - if you are sitting in your room all day, you are missing out on too much!
Easy access to the freeway once you figure out the streets. Great beach for easy snorkeling about 2 miles south of the unit, all the downtown shops and restaurants about 2 miles north.
Pluses: Decor was great, washer/dryer in unit, location, helpful staff (if you need anything)
Minuses: Road noise during the day, 3rd floor unit so be prepared to climb the stairs : )
We would stay here again in a heart beat!
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay. We rented a car so getting around was not an issue. Liked the north west beaches rather that the ones by the condo less rocks. The temperatures were great as we came from North Pole, Alaska. The condo was clean and well kept. We enjoyed our stay immensely.
We rented a moped where the girl said to go out to the refuge. This was not a good idea, we turned around at the big hill and took the car which we were glad we did. I played tennis at the Royal Kona resort $30 for the month. They have a mixer 3 times a week and drills once a week. Took an extra lesson with pro Terry which I enjoyed but schedule early if not used to the heat. We drove around the island which was great. Visited the volcano, saw whales, dolphins, turtles and of course went swimming every day. Loved the happy hour at the lava lava beach club but the beach not so much for swimming as it has a row of sharp rocks that cut us up. 5 minutes north Hapuna beach was a lot nicer for swimming although rip tides come up quickly so don't want to go past the swells or the lifeguards will call you in. People are all very friendly, very relaxing vacation.
We would stay again a very affordable vacation rental. Thank you very much :)
