1 bedroom cottage that can accommodate up to 4 in a traditional Azorean village
Casa da Fonte is a cottage located in the village of Algarvia in the heart of the Nordeste district, São Miguel island, Azores, Portugal. This rural stone house, which is equipped for guests with reduced mobility, has a double bedroom, a living room with a wood burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen, including a traditional wood-oven, and a bathroom. This beautiful cottage also provides a covered veranda with a barbecue grill and a large garden.
The accommodation is all fenced and includes a parking with automatic door.
From the terrace, and from the outside, in general, you can have a beautiful sea view, in contrast with green mountain views.
For the entertainment of its guests, Casa da Fonte provides, at no additional cost, satellite TV, DVD, HI-FI, Internet Wifi, a small library, indoor games, two bicycles and a croquet court.
THE HOUSE RECOVERY: As the house, located at Nordeste district, Sao Miguel island, Azores, was being rebuilt, we actively tried to maintain its architecture, restoring the original structure by using traditional materials and techniques. In addition, some new elements were added aiming to improve the living conditions. These new elements are characterized by aesthetically contemporary options.
Some of the surrounding plots of land have been turned into gardens, where the peace and quiet of the countryside can be enjoyed. In the gardens, a wide range of ornamental plants can be observed. Some of these plants are endemic and some are fruit trees commonly seen in the backyards of Azorean rural stone houses.
For the interior decoration we used restored traditional Azorean antique furniture together with contemporary objects, in order to obtain high levels of authenticity and comfort.
Our cottage offers you a range of leisure equipment that you can use inside or outside at no additional cost
AZORES Islands and the NORDESTE district: Like pearls lost in the ocean, the Islands of the Azores, are located in the North Atlantic, about 1,500 km west of Lisbon. The archipelago is formed by nine volcanic islands and has a total area of approximately 2,333 km2.
On these islands you will find places of extraordinary tranquility and beauty, where the blue of the sea and of the hydrangeas and the green of the fields and mountains range in hue from one island to another. The crater lakes have a unique beauty and mystical charm, associated with ancient legends. Their museums, churches and palaces house artistic and historical treasures and their traditions, popular festivities, handicrafts and gastronomy are still very much alive, comprising a five hundred year old heritage.
The Nordeste district, in particular, is the best kept secret on São Miguel Island. Its untouched nature, with a large area of laurel forest, inhabited by the Azores bullfinch, a unique species, and its breathtaking landscapes, with the deep blue sea view.
ACTIVITIES TO EXPERIENCE: As a holiday destination, Sao Miguel island, Azores, Portugal, definitely suit all tastes. Here you will find golf courses surrounded by flowers and lush vegetation, walking trails, where you can observe nature, birds, endemic plants and volcanic phenomena; cetacean and marine life observation; grey sandy beaches inviting you to spend hours of fun in the sea, which is sometimes calm, and where the waves are often ideal for surfing. Tennis, horseback riding, sailing and big-game fishing are among the many activities that you can choose for an unforgettable holiday.

Tranquil Garden by the Sea
We are wanderers and prefer to stay places where we learn something about the people and places we visit. Casa de Fonte is just such a place. Cozy and clean, the renovated stone house is perfect for two and can easily accommodate one or two small children. The casa is stocked with everything you need for a fun holiday along with some basic foodstuffs - including delicious handmade bread and homemade jam. We stayed here during the off season and experienced some chilly temperatures but managed quite nicely with the wood stove. We used the casa as a starting point to explore the spectacular island of Sao Miguel. Our host, Ricardo, was very helpful with recommendations on restaurants, shopping, hiking, and sightseeing. He was also responsive to any query or concern we had during our visit. The village of Algarvia is charming - hard-working farmers, tidy homes, horses for pulling the milk carts, goats, and, of course, cows. The local people were reserved and almost shy but ready to return your "bom dia" with a broad smile and a kind response. Make sure to visit Algarvia's Miradouro and bring a picnic. We spent our last evening there watching the gulls soar past the beautiful cliffs as the sun set to the west. A very memorable vacation - a place we want to return to.
Very friendly host and many additional information about this part of the island!
Casa do Fonte - wunderbar!

Although referred in old documents since the 16th century, Algarvia population was scarce or non-existent before the 17th century. The settlement was named “Algarvia” due to one of its inhabitants, a woman whose origin was the Algarve. Algarvia has strong rural characteristics. Originally a 17th century chapel, the church was rebuilt in the 19th century. It is small and plain with a single tower and one aisle. The high altar is humble but beautiful. The main trail to Pico da Vara, the highest mountain of the island, starts here. The former lookout place for whales has a wonderful view of the ocean and of Pico da Vara.
