This is a real beauty and a secret on the oceanside!

A top floor Kona Makai unit, one bedroom, one bath plus loft. The 2 lanais are perfect for kicking back and enjoying the ocean view with your meals or just playing on the computer or reading a good book! The complex offers tennis, a pool and spa, fitness center and bbq areas and is within walkable distance to Kona Town. Treat yourself to a week or two at Kona Makai and discover all of the coastline when you walk along Alii Drive! Do call right away to book for winter, as we fill up very fast. This is a new listing so do it now when there is space available!

Lovely Condo

My four stars indicate a VERY GOOD overall rating. This recently upgraded condo is fresh, clean, and very nice. It is tastefully decorated and most of the furnishings are new. I loved having the hardwood floor. The size is perfect for a family of 4 with one king on the main level and 2 twins in the loft. I like being on the top floor. I really appreciated the details like good quality bedspreads, linens, towels, beach towels and gear in great condition (if not brand new), and lots of supplies like shampoo and conditioner, a first aid kit, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc. We enjoyed eating breakfast on the main lanai where there is a decent ocean view, partially obstructed.

Mary and Jay were great to deal with throughout the booking process and were very responsive to small issues that arose while we were there, as issues always do.

The complex is very nice and very well maintained. I like that it is near town, but not too close to town. It was quiet. My kids loved the ping pong table near the pool and the pool itself. We loved bringing our dinner down to the grill/table area and eating while we watched the sunset. We met nice people doing the same. Be advised that the hot tub is officially off limits to kids under 14, but we worked around it. Some of the residents are a little fussy about visitors following the rules, but I believe that makes for a nicer place to stay overall.

I highly recommend this condo and complex to families as well as couples. I would absolutely stay here again.

Perfectly fine

We stayed here for 5 days in Feb. We had no problems with reservations, directions or keys, received our $200. deposit 10 days after leaving. The apartment was clean, bed was comfortable.

Our dealings with the agent were fine, she got back to me quickly and was helpful and pleasant.

Wifi (apparently complex wide) was very slow and often didn't work. The "gym" was barely adequate.

The complex was well maintained but there were workmen noises -- an apartment near by was being renovated, carpets in our stairwell were being replaced during our stay -- , I know this happens, but...

The complex is on a very busy road, often the road is backed up for long stretches. There is condo complex after condo complex and you have to get in the car to get a quart of milk or most things.

Owner's Response: Yes, February is an especially busy time for vacationing with snowbirds and The Big Island is very popular. We do not have freeways or wide 4 lane highways, as the oceanfront drive is just 2 lanes and not going to get any wider. It does get congested at times. This is a lovely and very clean and remodeled condo with view of ocean, pool, spa, ping pong table and small work out area. Thank you for your review.

Lovely grounds, right by the ocean

This Kona Makai property provides a great base for watching ocean sunsets, walking Ali'i Drive to downtown, and going to nearby Kahalu'u Park for snorkeling. The grounds of the property are impeccably maintained, with beautiful plants and flora. The condo is clean and spacious. Mary was exceptionally helpful in arranging our stay.

The condo unit was a DUMP. The complex property was beautiful.

Our rental agreement and welcome letter were deceptive, misleading, and full of inconsistencies. The VRBO listing and welcome letter stated the pool hours were 9am-10pm, but the property manager, Mary Christ, failed to do her homework. Pool hours were not what was promised, and according to the complex manager the pool hours have always been 9am-8pm for children. The welcome letter stated there was "high speed internet" and according to the complex manager the complex has never had "high speed internet". Upon arrival we were locked out of the complex for 45 minutes because the property manager, Mary Christ, gave us the wrong gate code and she would not answer her phone. The units fridge wasn't in proper working order and we lost $450 worth of groceries. The property manager, Mary Christ, was notified and it took multiple calls for her to respond. She lied and said there was repair people schedule and we caught her in that lie. Rather then making every attempt to get the fridge back in working order her solution was two cheap coolers and a "mini-fridge", and we were responsible to purchase the ice for the coolers. It took multiple phone calls to get her to respond and Ms. Christ wanted to evict us, so we had to file a police report for fear of eviction.

There were multiple other issues with the unit, the stove top had a broken burner, the bathroom sink was slow to drain, and the a/c unit in the bedroom was so loud you couldn't sleep.

Never once did Ms. Christ offer to replace our lost groceries or lost vacation time due to dealing with the fridge issues.

Owner's Response: While the guests reserved for a party of four, we were not informed that a party of 5 would arrive for the very busy New’s Years holiday. Upon being notified of water pooling in the main compartment and alleged inadequate cooling, we made over100 phone calls to repair or replace during a time when many service people are on Holiday putting a greater strain on the few remaining operating service companies. .. We are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean; and we do not always have appliances at our disposal. They often have to be ordered and it is not unusual to wait a week to ten days for delivery. Though we called every service company in the book, no one was able to schedule a trouble call until the following week. did our level best to deliver a new refrigerator. A can of beer that was handed me to test for coldness was as cold as drinks in my refrigerator but the guest said that ‘it was not as cold as in Alaska.’ We offered more ice as needed or reimburse for what they purchased. We also asked that they unpack some of the overloaded refrigerator to the coolers. In some desperation, a refrigerator was purchased; delivered to the foot of the stairs, only to be told by delivery that the refir would not fit around the turns on the staircase and we would have to locate a hoist. The refir was not delivered, no hoist available. An unhappy guest told us that this was how it was going to go: that we were to pay them $350 per day to dine out until we provided them with a new refrigerator. not only unreasonable, but virtually impossible, we offered to refund their money in full, though they had been there several days.. This was rejected. But agreed to our offer to purchase a smaller refrigerator that could be delivered by an individual to add to the perfectly operating freezer and the main compartment which was not as cold as in Alaska. Warm tropical temperatures and continual opening and closing of the overpacked refrigerator door by a family of five (5) may have led to cold air not circulating. A repair person has been out who defrosted the refrigerator and told us the freezer had been turned all the way up, causing the drain line to freeze and impairing the cooling of the refir, repairman stated nothing wrong with the refir, and we have had guests stay before and right after this guest -checked out with no problems or complaints from these guests that checked out on Jan 24. All of this was out of our control. No room on website to complete response.

Property was clean with beautiful ocean front

Although the property was nice and clean, the unit was a bit disappointing. We arrived, to a "tidy" condo, but it was by no means "clean". There were dead bugs and dust around the night stands in the king size bedroom. When I pulled down the sheets to get into bed, there was a dead moth on my pillow. We had to ask for toilet paper, and it was not sufficiently stocked with your traditional kitchen supplies, such as,paper towels, foil, and/or plastic wrap. All... I mean EVERY SINGLE DISH we pulled out of the cupboard to use was dirty!!! Along with every pan we cooked with. The floors were dusty. It was disgusting!!! Needless to say very disappointing! We lost all power in the front of the house, but that was an easy fix. After I contacted the manager, she got back to us, and figured it was a blown fuse in the box. Once we clicked them all off then on again it all worked fine. The view is not as it is pictured in the advertisement. There is a big palm tree blocking the view on the lani!

Very very disappointed with the unit! I will never again rent from this unit. I saw some other units and they were very nice. For almost $200 a night....was not worth it at all!!

Owner's Response: When the guest checked in we had a back to back day, and the cleaners were late in being able to finish in time, but the guest called and wanted to check in early, but I said no. I took rolls of toilet paper and paper towels to her right after she called me,, and it was a very busy Holiday week. The dishes were taken out of the dishwasher and placed in cabinet, and not one has ever said they were dirty. Bugs will appear no matter what is done, we spray on a monthly basis and can only control them not eradicate. They were dead so the spraying is working, and most likely appeared after cleaning. We are sorry that the guest was upset, but we really try our best to keep all clean and supplied, and during the back to back weeks, it is a challenge.
