Eco Wonderland ~ Sleeps 8 in Kalorama / Adams Morgan!

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Attention ECO lovers! Our stunning Art's and Crafts home is the most wonderful place to discover while visiting the District. Guests will find themselves entering a divine artisanal space, a real retreat nestled in the Kalorama / Adams Morgan neighborhood of our nation's capital!

Like many houses in Washington, this home’s past inhabitants have run the gamut of actors on the national and international scene. In the last quarter of the 20th Century alone, this structure has served as the DC headquarters and safe house for a Marxist Latin American guerrilla movement, as well as the family home of a controversial, conservative scholar on the national scene.

The Space

This beautiful “brownstone” (designed by Hornblower and Marshall - architects of the world-famous Phillips Collection, the iconic Fraser Mansion, and the National Museum of Natural History), is an early incarnation of the Arts and Crafts architectural movement’s arrival from Britain to the USA.

The house has been meticulously renovated to the highest standards -- not only aesthetically, including the exposure of brick on all three floors -- but also using the most environmentally friendly and health-conscious materials available, from bamboo and locally sourced, salvaged pine, to recycled glass counters and  non-toxic finishes on all interior surfaces. Despite the addition of modern elements to the structure and colors of the home, all changes have been made with the utmost respect for the environment, and the original character of the building.

Featured in 'Washington Home and Garden' magazine, the house allows guests to relax while enjoying the abundant, leafy green resting outside the windows and surrounding the porch and balcony, where an airy, cool space, intentionally reminiscent of the lush, interior courtyards of Mexico and Central America, awaits.

Despite your proximity to the hustle and bustle of Adams Morgan, with the back garden windows open and ceiling fans on throughout, guests can awaken to a breeze infused with the scent of pine and other flora growing in the entirely organic garden.

Explore room to room and enjoy the tastefully selected color scheme of rich yellows, eye-catching greens, and serene blues that create a wonderfully unique and soothing living space.

Parking for one vehicle included -- one private space!

We can comfortably sleep eight guests in four bedrooms. With the queen in the master, a queen in the second bedroom, a single bed in the third, a full-sized futon (two guests) in the lounge/TV area, and an air mattress at the ready, large groups, families, and business travelers will have space to spread out!

Outside spaces

Sliding doors in the kitchen open up wide, allowing the kitchen and porch area to become one. Rain or shine, you’ll enjoy overlooking the secret garden (shared with the downstairs tenant) in the mornings and evenings flanked by beautiful Japanese maples, wisteria, and a lush variety of other plants. It really is the perfect place to decompress after a day of sightseeing, making you question if you are even in the city at all!

On the second floor, a balcony is available for use, accessible via an oversized window. Here you can discover another slice of seclusion and greenery in the midst of the hustle and bustle outside your front door!

Getting ready never felt so refined! Guests can pick and choose between the two free-standing soaking tubs (both with showers) to add a touch of sophistication to their morning routine.

Exposed brick in the master bathroom, and pebble “tile” work blend to create  a light and airy, spa-like feel.

The second bathroom boasts combination of a glass block design reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright - an oversized French window and the recycled glass mosaic surrounding the bathing area

beautifully morphs the natural light into a kaleidoscope of blues, greens and whites that will allow guests to have an afternoon soak evocative of a Mediterranean holiday.

Kitchen / Living area

A stunning chef's kitchen awaits those culinarily inclined! Superbly equipped, guests can prepare anything from a small breakfast to a Thanksgiving spread, with plenty of space to move around and entertain.

One can lower the custom-made, shoji screen  to separate the kitchen from the dining space. If  a more interactive, free-flowing space is in order, just flip the screen up and open! For an even more airy atmosphere, just slide open the glass door to the porch to experience a breezy, bright and open floor plan, ideal for enjoying your fellow travelers’ company!

With two living / relaxing spaces -- the first floor rooms and porch, plus the upstairs den and balcony guests can choose where to sit and relax after a day of sightseeing.  And there is always the back garden! With a huge amount of reading material available, and  no shortage of reading nooks, book lovers will be right at home. Great insulation completely blocks off the urban energy in the street, and also keeps the temperature exactly as you like it.

The house also boasts air purification systems; so even the most sensitive asthmatic or allergy sufferer will be able to breathe easy.

Interaction with guests

We are always available for any questions or issues that may arise during your stay. We have an in-depth welcome pack inside the home, chock full of our neighborhood recommendations and "must see's". Also, check out our monthly event calendar to help plan your stay!

The Neighborhood

The house rests in the charming Kalorama neighborhood, immediately adjacent to the uber trendy Adams Morgan. Kalorama  is home to political and business elites, ranging from the Obamas and Kushner Trumps to Jeff Bezos  and many more.  Other notable residents of Kalorama have included Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren Harding, and Herbert Hoover.

Adams Morgan is a rich, multi-cultural neighborhood the architecture of which spans from the 19th Century to the ultra-modern. It is known locally for its great nightlife, and proximity to several parks, as well as the National Zoo! There is no shortage of restaurants and bars down 18th Street, which intersects with  Columbia Road, the western side of which (closer to the house) offers a slower-paced night out, with more ”can’t-miss designer” restaurants.

Getting Around

This home is in a wonderful spot from which to explore the city. The White House is just over 30 minutes away, door to door on foot. The house lies between the Woodley Park, Columbia Heights and Dupont Circle metro stations, and within one block of various handy bus lines. It is surrounded in all directions by bike stations and, in this part of town, rideshares are never more than a few minutes -- or seconds! -- away.

- please make sure and double-check when submitting the code for the lockbox. Ours was not correct and it took a while in the freezing night to get this solved.

- a better/new espresso machine in the kitchen would be appreciated for sure
