Apartment has beautiful double door entrance from street into a bright living room with working fireplace. There are hardwood floors throughout. The kitchen and dining room open onto a beautiful courtyard and a fountain filled with hummingbirds. The kitchen was renovated in 2012, with granite counter tops, marmoleum floors and new appliances. The front bedroom has new queen bed with 12 inch memory foam pillow top mattress, the rear bedroom has twin beds.( a crib and young child bed rail are also available).
Grawin House has been in our family for over fifty years. It was my home as a child. We returned to Berkeley after our children were grown and made Grawin House a family compound for three generations of our family. Now that the younger generation has moved into their own homes, we have lovely apartments to share with others.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time living at 1660 Oxford Street. From the moment we arrived we felt really at home – the apartment is generously proportioned, well furnished and has a nice homely feel. Being on the ground floor and one level was perfect for our young son, as was access to the tranquil courtyard off the dining room.
The owners were extremely welcoming and attentive hosts, though the apartment was in such good order that we did not really need to call on them at all. As a visitor to UC Berkeley the location was ideal, allowing me to walk to and from work each day – a walk that will live with me for a long time for its wonderful views of the bay. Not only that, but you’re right on the doorstep of Berkeley’s ‘gourmet ghetto’ and its wealth of restaurants, cafes and shops. Such a good selection, in fact, that we had no need to use a car for the duration of our trip.
I highly recommend this apartment – an ideal base for visitors to Berkeley and the surrounding area.
The apartment was amazing and the proprietor was very available, kind and hospitable, sometimes could be a little noisy upstairs.
Perfect blend of old world charm and modern convenience. Beautiful antiques, along with the best equipped kitchen I've ever stayed in; right down to the espresso machine and tea infuser. Apartment was spotless, and the beds super comfortable. Petra and Gary were attentive to our every need, while still respecting our privacy. I'll be staying here whenever I'm in the Berkeley area, and will definitely recommend it to my friends.
I have stayed at the Grawin apartment a few times now as it's a perfect place to stay when visiting Berkeley and the surrounding Bay Area. The apartment itself is spacious and has a wonderful cozy charm with an updated kitchen and appliances. It is comfortably furnished and has everything you need (coffee maker, toaster, plenty of silverware, etc.) The apartment opens directly out onto a well manicured front brick area and is literally a short walk to Peet's Coffee, the Cheeseboard, the famed Chez Pannisse restaurant, and the rest of the gourmet ghetto.
The apartment's back door opens up to a beautiful courtyard with a nice foundation and bistro table for year round relaxation given the great weather in the area.
As for hosts, Gary and Petra are fantastic and make you feel like family from the moment you arrive, without being too involved or overbearing. They live on the other side of the courtyard and are always available in case you need help finding a great restaurant or activities in the area.
From staying here a few times, don't miss out on nightly (starting around 4p or 5p) live music and amazing pizza at the Cheeseboard 2 blocks away (rated #2 restaurant in U.S. on Yelp!), walks through UC Berkeley campus (2 blocks), or hopping on the BART train (~10 min walk) to get into San Francisco ~30 minutes.
Our family of 2 adults and 2 kids spent three weeks in this lovely apartment. It was perfect for this size of group. It had a very nice sitting room and a new kitchen, as well as two good size bedrooms and a dinig room. Everything was spotlessly clean and well decorated. The apartment is spacious and bright, with it's own front door and access to a peaceful courtyard.
The apartment is very well located for UC Berkeley, Downtown Berkely and shops/restaurants on Shattuck. The neighbourhood is quiet and safe. We spent our time exploring Berkeley and SF which is easily accessed by BART. The owners who live in the property were warm and friendly, and the property is well managed. Everything was organised perfectly. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again soon!
This apartment had everything we needed and the owners were extremely nice. They provided us with the first breakfast supplies which was very helpful after a long flight. Our rented car got a parking space in the back and we appreciated that a lot. The location was more than perfect. Stores and restaurants in walking distance.

The apartment is located one block from the university of California. It is a great location for visiting faculty, alumni or family of students. It has a lovely off street courtyard to enjoy for an outdoor meal or reading. There is now a large screen TV and cable as well as unit based high speed internet. When its cold, you can make a cozy fire in the fireplace.
The neighborhood is filled with lively coffeehouses and restaurants, including the famous Chez Panisse. You can easily walk to shop for groceries at large, well stocked markets or specialty shops like the cheese board or the local butcher.
Exploring beyond the neighbor is easy too. The Bart (bay area rapid transit) station is 7 blocks away, ac transit stops with express bus service to San Francisco and the greater bay area are 1 block away. If you need a car, zip cars and city share cars can be picked up 2 blocks away or you can rent a car at enterprise rentals for a day of exploring in the wine country or other bay area sites just 2 blocks away. The apartment and neighbor is very family friendly with parks and playgrounds a stroll away.
