About Peggy Kennedy
My family was fortunate in spending 20 years overseas as I worked my second career as a teacher for military families both in Asia and Europe. While overseas, my daughter and I were able to take advantage of many travel opportunities and stay in different types of living quarters while in various countries. I had decided to get involved in this endeavor when returning to the US, after using it as a traveler abroad in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland; really appreciating this type of vacation over the traditional hotel/inn stay; having a base of operation, more space to simply relax in when not traveling to/fro, etc. With that in mind, my daughter and I have been working to make our lake property just as appealing for others as it is for us.
Peggy Kennedy purchased this House in 1976
Why Peggy Kennedy chose Battle Lake
Minnesota is known for its lakesvacation opportunities. I have been blessed with a very early purchase of a property that I managed to hold onto for 30+ years, finally putting a home on it in 2010 in preparation for retirement. I currently split my time between my Minnesota lake home and my second home in Las Vegas. I want to make either/or available for the pleasure of others when I am not at one or the other. In that manner, I can earn some extra money to then reinvest in the property to continue to make it more "automated"--new sod, sprinkler system, more water toys, etc., all the while waiting for our current family structure to "grow into" the property.
What makes this House unique
This property is rare in that it is very private. With a public access on one side and an extended wooded area on the other that is considered "unbuildable, there are no "land" neighbors. Deer Lake is a mid-sized lake, so it is not terribly busy, even on holiday weekends, which is also nice for those of us who live on the lake. It is a good fishing/swimming lake, where one is able to see the bottom of the lake from anywhere on the lake. It is used both in summer/winter for fishing/water/ice sports. There is also a speed boat available for rental, and Battle Lake rents out kayaks, bikes, jet skis, canoes, etc.;both short/long terms basis. There are also many eateries available in the towns close by. Stubs is renown for excellent seafood/steaks. Nothing is priced out of reach. Shoreline Cafe is also touted for its grandiose breakfast entrees. There are also "buck burger" nights, and other daily specials in surrounding townships. Fergus Falls is 20 minutes away, and the large city of Fargo is about 1 hour's drive.

Our family enjoyed a wonderful week at Peggy's beautiful lake property. There wasn't anything we needed inside or out that we couldn't find, (except the jumper cables... that WERE in the garage cupboards!). Fully equipped kitchen, three nice sized bedrooms with comfortable beds, and roomy living/dining area. We enjoyed the indoor games at night or spent the evening out around the fire pit making s'mores and watching the beautiful sunsets across the lake. The large deck facing the lake is a real plus, as is the large, secluded yard. Our kids and grand kids especially enjoyed the paddle boards and paddle boat. The lake is clean with a sandy beach and shallow for quite a ways out. We spent a fun afternoon using the tubes provided by Peggy (she has many) to float from Otter Tail Lake down a lazy, shallow, portion of the Otter Tail river that connects to Deer Lake. We ended up almost in front of our dock!
Morning walks along Northview Road are great... a dead end road with practically no traffic. We also visited the surrounding towns for fun shopping and food. Pizza at Zorbas is a must! It's a stone's throw away. If you have time, visit the Prairie Wetlands center in Fergus. We spent a few hours there and our grand daughter took part in a catch, tag and release monarch butterfly program. We had a chance to meet Peggy on the day we were leaving. A warm, fun and friendly woman. She was wonderful to rent from, easy to contact and quick with a response. Thank you Peggy for our "best ever" lake stay. We hope to return next summer.
I rarely get to meet the families staying at my home, always trying to be as unobtrusive to the stays as possible. This family happened to be packing up as I made my way to the beach to start the customary clean up and to look for anything that may have "appeared" in my absence from the lake--always a little present or two from those out fishing; making it possible to meet them. They were so clean and respective of the property, leaving little for my cleaning crew to do, which they too, much appreciated. They even mowed the expansive yard to make it easier to play the outdoor games provided, which was a great surprise for the likes of me--one of my usual first tasks. It is a great pleasure to have families like this one come to stay in my humble abode and I would love to have them back again.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Peggy’s home on Deer lake.
This is a beautiful home! It is clean, comfortable, and well kept. There are many water toys, games, and movies provided by the owner. The decorations in this house are expensive so I probably wouldn’t recommend having small children around them. Even as adults, we felt we needed to move things out of the way to keep them safe. We had a couple problems (shower door and smoke detectors) but the owner dealt with solving them quickly. The linens and beds were very comfortable.
I’d suggest just a couple things to the owner. There probably needs to be two trash cans and perhaps a reminder on a sticky note of trash day being early in the week. Otherwise, guests will have to dispose of it themselves or be charged a fee for each bag. The two potted plants on the deck stairs attract bees and, although they were very pretty, most people don’t like bees around as they relax on the deck. And lastly, if this is going to be a “rental” house, the decor is just too expensive. We were not the partying type (often in bed by 10 pm) yet still felt nervous about all the owners beautiful things.
This rental property is the perfect choice for a small family. Peggy is very organized and wonderful to work with. The views from the house are spectacular and fishing wasn’t bad either!! We’d also recommend going to Zorbaz which is very close by and has the best atmosphere and pizza in the Midwest!!
Thanks for the great review of my home. I have been fortunate in working overseas for half of my career, which is reflected in the decor of my home. I do live in the house when it is not rented, so the atmosphere/environment is one I do tend to want for myself as well.
We had met the year previously to discuss the size/ability to accommodate your group in my home, using this stay as a trial for your group of 14; both coming to the decision it was too large for my house, despite the 5th wheel and tent attempts to offset some of the sleeping challenges. While it turned out to be a fantastic stay in terms of fun/family time together, it did present some trash/space dilemmas; all dealt with as quickly/expediently as possible, with positive results.
I appreciate that this family has enjoyed the "lakes country" for 20+ years and will continue to do so in the future. It is a beautiful area to enjoy family vacations.
Beautiful secluded home perfect for a family getaway!
This home is AMAZING and the owner was wonderful to work with! The extra amenities that the owner provides makes this property ideal for a family that wants to kick back, relax, and enjoy the water. There was so much to do to keep our young family busy and we didn’t have to spend an extra dime to do it. We hope to come back here soon!
Fantastic family that came to the lake to enjoy the water/amenities the "lakes country" has to offer. Family had great communication skills and were easy to please. My home was left in great shape; making this family wonderful guests in any home stay situation. Peggy Kennedy
Very nice get away with some friends. Highly recommend
Thanks very much for choosing my house for your little getaway with friends for the weekend. Very conscientious about how they left the house upon their departure, which I appreciated. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Peggy
Lovely property, very helpful and nice owner!
Family traveled from Ohio to stay in Minnesota. Planning/stay was effortless, thanks to their great communication and ease to please manner. It's families like these that make opening my lake home to people for their vacations worthwhile/enjoyable. Thanks for choosing my home for your stay.
A well maintained property with every amenity and convenience of home.
This is a very nice property with plenty of room and private lakeshore. The lake is clean and the river is very nice for paddling and floating. The trees are perfect for hammocks. There is a wonderful porch and patio area for evening campfires. This property is best suited for 3 couples.
A great family to invite into any home. Very respectful of my property and the amenities provided. Also, being avid travelers, provided some keen insights into how to make my vacation experience one that families will thorough benefit from. I will continue adding new water equipment and activities, hoping to enhance quality family time.
Deer Lake is in western Minnesota and considered "Lakes Country" due the number of lakes in this condensed space, allowing for many opportunities for water activities. Special to my property is its isolation/privacy. It abuts a public access on one side and an unbuildable lot on another, and County Rd 83 on the third, so access to the lake is private as is the setting of the house. The house sets on 5 acres of wooded land. A lazy river ends at the property, providing a 1.5 hour raft opportunity for families. Because of the size of the property, many outdoor games are available for travelers as well, and a night arc light provides light well into the night. There are 4 golf courses with 15 miles, Glendalough State Park is a 6 mile drive, and there are many small area towns that offer clever and thrift shopping, great lunch specials, bar/evening specials just about every night. There is local theater at a "rib" place, and Native American gambling is about 1.5 hours from the house. Stubs, in Battle Lake, is renowned for their great seafood/steaks; while Shoreline Cafe is just as well known for their superb breakfast fare. Fergus Falls is the largest/nearest city, while Fargo is the major metropolis; about an hour's drive from the house.
