Point Reyes Retreat Close to Nature and Town

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Minimum Stay

About the property

Beautiful skylight-lit home nestled into a wooded hillside. Quiet, secluded location but close to everything - about two miles from Point Reyes Station, Inverness, and the Point Reyes National Seashore visitors' center. Plus an easy 5 min walk for coffee or a sandwich at Perry's Deli, or birding at the Giacomini Wetlands.

Built in 1919, the home features old growth redwood through out. Open, fully-equipped kitchen. Large dining / living room area with chairs for lounging in front of the wood-burning stove, and couches for relaxing and play games. One bathroom with a wood-paneled shower and tub. New outdoor shower! Two bedrooms - one has a Queen sized McRoskey bed, the other has a comfy double bed. There is also a queen sized sleeper sofa in the living room. Skylights in every room.

Right out the back door there are three the levels of patios dotted with ferns, providing views of the surrounding Douglas Fir and Bay forest. The first level is a brick patio with a BBQ, the second level has a table and chairs for enjoying a scenic lunch, and the third level has Adirondack chairs to enjoy the views or a good book.

The home has a second unit on the lower floor, occupied by a full time local resident with separate entrance. Some sounds can transmit through the floor. A washer and dryer, shared by both units, are located in a common area on the lower level. Stairs from this area lead up to the vacation rental unit.

About Merrian Borgeson

We love hiking, biking, and kayaking in beautiful places. And we're big fans of kind, ecologically-minded people, and delicious, fresh, local food. This makes us a good match for each other and for Point Reyes. We met in graduate school at UC Berkeley studying energy efficiency and renewable energy, and got married in Point Reyes in 2011. We live in Oakland, which is known as 'over the hill' to our West Marin friends.

Merrian Borgeson purchased this house in 2012

Nice and clean, surrounded by trees and lots of windows!

  • 5 of 5

We had no problems checking in even though we got there at night. I was a bit concerned about downstairs neighbor but we didn't hear anything at all. Kitchen is fully stocked with essentials and ready to cook. PackNplay and high chair were a plus for us since we had our 17 month old baby with us. Queen size bed was very comfortable. Heating worked nicely even without using the wood stove. I would recommend this place and stay again there.

Beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay, short as it was. We arrived at night and though very dark initially, as we approached the property ample light came on and we had no problems getting into house. We were very happy as there was ample room, everything needed in the kitchen, and very comfortable beds and pillows. Every thing was very clean and the instructions for arrival and check out were very clear and easy to follow. From every window all you see is nature and it felt like living in a tree house, which I loved!

Had to call about a minor detail and the call was returned promptly and the detail resolved!

Wonderful place to visit, great hiking, beautiful beaches, plenty of restaurants, and a quaint country store right around the corner.

We hope to return in the future!

A Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed for a whole week at this beautiful and very well equipped house and enjoyed it very much. It even seemed to be much bigger than on the photos. We really appreciated the comfortable beds with pretty sheets, the good quality of everything here and the wood architecture, so many windows....and it is absolutely quiet. One day we will come back again.

Lovely home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time here, made even better by Merrian's considerate emails with suggestions for what we could do with our 18th month old! The house is perfectly appointed with childproofing, toys, books, kitchen utensils, seasonings etc, the market is great for all the essentials, Tomales bay beach is an easy drive, we even took our bikes on a ride from Horse Valley Info center!

We just wished we could have stayed longer, but we will definitely recommend this house to everyone!

San Francisco

Great location. Well equipped home.

We loved the location. Near Point Reyes Station. We explored the Saturday Farmers Market, restaurant.

Close to hiking trails, beaches. The house is well equipped and comfortable. Quiet too.

Will go again.

Nice place to stay, loud neighbor

  • 3 of 5

The house is great, a very nice place to stay, beautiful surroundings and exactly what is written in the description. However the downstairs neighbor is very loud, making lots of noise and doing laundry when he/she came home at 4AM (woke us all up because the noise travels up the open stairway). You really hear the neighbors TV which is on, during the day, for long periods of time, because there is no main door.

Owner's Response: We were sorry to read about this experience and take our guest's comfort and comments very seriously. However, we thought this description was of behavior out of character for our tenant and have some clarifications: (1) Out of respect for our guests, our tenant rarely does laundry in the evening and never at night. Instead, we have determined that the electric motor noise in the night came from our home's heat pump heating system, not the laundry. It is an outdoor unit similar to a central AC unit, but can heat as well as cool. Its fan is audible from some rooms in the house, but is on the opposite side of the house from the bedrooms. We have confirmed that the guest who heard the noise originally was in the living room and all were having trouble sleeping due to jet lag from Europe. Still, we have heard the feedback: light or sensitive sleepers can be disturbed by it, especially when its origin is a mystery. We are planning to install double pane windows to further dampen the sound from outside. (2) To be clear, the tenant and guest spaces are fully separated by an internal wall and door and the tenant uses a private entrance. We have confirmed that the "TV" sounds in question were actually a radio in use during the day (our tenant doesn't own a TV). Regardless of origin, sound does travel between the upstairs and downstairs, but is typically muffled. We try to represent this accurately in the description of the rental and rarely hear of negative experiences. We are pursuing professional guidance on abatement, but will never be able to promise complete silence in this space.
