About Betty Tully

My daughter Jo and myself manage the cottage and live on the estate. The cottage was designed for complete privacy - although if you need/want personal contact we are nearby. We love the Sooke area , know it well and are always delighted to introduce people to it.

Betty Tully purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Betty Tully chose Vancouver Island

1400 ft of wild ocean frontage with two accessible private beaches pretty much sums it up. There are also magnificent tall trees, trails through the rain forest, gardens, the beach house and stunning views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains.

What makes this cottage unique

In this Architect designed luxury cottage guests will enjoy the original artwork by Alex Fong, quality linens, the up-to-date kitchen, and the wood stove The cottage is near the point of land known as Otter Point. Otter Point is the only place in the area where you can cast a fishing line from shore and catch a salmon.

A gem on the west coast

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Seaward Cottage for a week in August and loved it! Betty is a friendly and fun host, who provides lots of inside information on what to do and see in the area. The light-filled cottage is beautiful and had everything our family needed. The beds were ultra comfortable with cosy duvets. Betty set us up with great coffee from Stick in the Mud Cafe in Sooke (if you like really good coffee, you’ll want to go there). The cottage faces Juan de Fuca Strait and is surrounded by lush gardens. We loved the trails to the low cliffs and watched the sun go down from the end of Sunset Trail every evening. We explored the long, pebbled beach by day and spent cosy evenings reading in the beach house. This place is a treasure and we look forward to visiting there again.

We stayed a week at Seaward and had a wonderful time. If was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had! Beds were comfortable., kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked so we didn't have to run out and buy anything. Private beach was just as described or better. We had a great time biking, hiking and enjoying some of the local restaurants. Would definitely go again.

A peaceful place to recharge

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a relaxing four days at the Seaward Cottage, we only wish we could have stayed longer! Betty is a thoughtful host, providing coffee, tea and chocolates. We had everything we needed there; a well stocked kitchen, BBQ, fluffy towels, fresh flowers, amazing views and a VERY comfortable king sized bed. There are multiple spots to take in views of the ocean, and even a small cabin on the beach if the weather is chilly. Betty recommended fishing with Mark Grant, and Wild Mountain for dinner - and she was spot on. Mark was a great guide, with many years of experience, and the food and service at Wild Mountain was outstanding. Thank you Betty!

A few improvements would make this cottage a stellar vacation rental

  • 4 of 5

Overall our stay at this rental was hassle-free and enjoyable. The location is just what we were looking for. There is a plethora of wildlife just outside the windows (we saw whales, otters, sea lions, bald eagles, and rabbits!) The style of the property and grounds is fresh and modern but very down-to-earth. Betty is kind and lovely. However, there were a few minor improvements that we might suggest that would make this a top-notch rental worth every penny:

1. The floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean are fantastic, but only the bottom half of the windows were actually clean. We could not see through the top windows from the loft. I assume this is due to salt/sea spray, but with the price of the rental we would have expected the windows to be clean before our stay. It really was a disappointment.

2. Speaking of hard-to-reach places...the lovely vaulted ceilings, ceiling fans, and upper window ledges were chock full of cob webs. Again, all within plain sight from the loft area. An easy fix with a long painter's stick attached to a duster. And again, for the price of the rental, I would expect these areas free of cobwebs that have clearly been there a long while.

3. We failed to notice that the property did not have a dishwasher when we rented the place. The last thing we wanted to do was stand around doing dishes on vacation, and we cooked on-site quite a bit. Additionally, knowing that the water is trucked in makes us scratch our heads at the lack of one... it would be much more water-efficient to use a good dishwasher.

We rent a vacation house annually, and honestly this house is at the bottom of the list for the price we paid, which seems silly since it is due to the items above, but I guess a little more effort really does go a long way.

I cannot begin to tell you how enjoyable our stay at the Seaward Cottage was. We started our vacation, spending only four days there, and we wanted to return as soon as we left. It was the jewel in our two-week trip to Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The place at Sooke was so welcoming and had everything we needed plus the location, views, and accessibility to the water were extraordinary. Our two teenagers, a boy and girl, loved climbing rocks and exploring. My son and I even stayed a night down in the Beach House, marveling at the sounds the waves were making as we were so close. Incredible and memorable experience to say the least! On Betty's recommendation, we ate a new Japanese restaurant Hara in town and had some incredibly fresh sushi rolls (try the Snake Dynamite). And make sure you hit the Potholes! All around AMAZING time. Only suggestion - if you're going to grill, carefully check under the grill cover as there's some tiny critters that like to hang out there :)

Main attractions are the many wild beaches with the ocean either stormy or calm as glass. See ocean wildlife such as Orcas, seals, sea lions and otters. For birdwatchers there are eagles, ospreys, owls, grebes, loons, herons and even the occasional pelican. There are world ranked restaurants such as Sooke Harbour House specializing in serving local produce. Fishing in the area is perhaps the best of the Island. Whale watching is well worth the experience. Bring your camera!
