About Samantha Guerry

After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.

Samantha Guerry purchased this chateau / country house in 1994

Why Samantha Guerry chose Virginia

We fell in love with this valley over 23 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA.

It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)

Everyone's Favorite - We loved it.

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed our time shared in this lovely vacation spot in the Virginia mountains with beautiful gardens and views. The home provided an anchor for our multi-generational group to gather. It was a big hit with everyone from the young children and their parents to the grandparents and aunts. Rain did not bother us as there are so many cozy spots to read, play games, nap, etc. We did enjoy the proximity to great hiking and fishing and visiting the farm animals nearby. The highlight of the mornings was gathering eggs for breakfast! We hope to return soon.

Beautiful cabin in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cabin in the woods with plenty of space. Great location close to many hikes, horseback riding, and all sorts of back to nature activities. There is no cell service, but that is what we wanted - perfect for getting away from it all. Connie the caretaker is great - we enjoyed our time here while we visited Shenandoah National Park.

Absolutely stunning in every way!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed this vacation so much! The cabin was gorgeous. It was such a joy to feel at home even away from home. The view was beautiful. We loved the wrap around porch equipped with a hammock and a great swing. Our family also spent a lot of time in the screened in porch area. The nearby town of Madison was a treasure, but, honestly we spent most of our time at the cabin. It was a wonderful respite for our family and we look forward to staying at this property again.

We had a wonderful stay at Old Rag Mountain Lodge. It was perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home both for its own beauty and charm and its proximity to Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon. We spent six days on the property (would have loved more!) and hiked three of the days. We enjoyed a day in Charlottesville and two days relaxing at the house and pond. The fishing was fun for all ages and our dogs loved swimming in the pond. We spent one rainy day playing board games, listening to music (loved the selection), and reading. The house is warm and cozy but has enough room for everyone to find their own space too. We cooked four nights and found the kitchen well appointed. Though it sometimes took a few tries to locate an item, we ultimately found everything we needed. The window seats / day beds in the two upstairs bedrooms are comparable to the size of single beds which may be especially helpful to those families who need more space than the king, queen, and two single beds. When we first arrived, the hot tub wasn't working, but it was fixed the next day and Connie, the caretaker, was very helpful throughout our stay. Finally, I just want to add to the comments on the beauty of the grounds. The landscaping and flower combinations are simply lovely!

Beautiful property with potential

  • 3 of 5

Overall, this is a nice property. Samantha was extremely nice and accommodating prior to our arrival. The house itself is clean and in good condition. Unfortunately, there were a few small things that started adding up to a not stellar experience.

- The place was infested with stink bugs. You are warned about this ahead of time but we didn't realize how bad it was. As an example, we killed 10 just during dinner that were buzzing around our heads. They are everywhere. You can't sit in the quiet because you constantly hear buzzing. We ended putting on the stereo most of the time to avoid hearing it. If bugs bother you (it bothered some in our group), this isn't the place for you.

- There are a ton of carpenter bees. Again, you are warned. They are harmless but it's really annoying trying to sit outside with a bee almost in your face. There is a covered patio area on the back, which was really nice but you are swarmed by stink bugs.

- There is a separate upstairs/downstairs HVAC and the upstairs one wasn't working. We didn't realize it the first night and just thought the place was taking time to cool down. But by the next evening when we came back from a day out, it was up to 86 degrees. We called the caretaker, Connie, around 7pm. She got back to us by 9pm and was very nice. She brought us fans and confirmed something seemed wrong with the AC. We made the best of it but it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. One person ended up sleeping on the downstairs couch.

- Something not in the host's control but you should know, this place is extremely hard to find. The street sign is bent so far that you don't even see it. One person came later, at night, got lost (there is no cell reception) and was lucky enough to get a local to help her. We do NOT recommend trying to drive here at night alone.

- There is no tv. I missed that in the description. There is a stereo with an auxiliary cable so we were able to play music.

- Adequate lighting is lacking. The bathrooms are very dark. Light switches are hard to find as they are hidden behind photo frames, etc.

Overall, this property has great potential. I think perhaps coming in non-bug season - is there such a thing? :) - this property would be perfect!

Owner's Response: We appreciate honest feedback and strive to give all our guests a first rate experience, however we take some offense at this misleading review: (1) Our house is certainly not "infested" with stink bugs, carpenter bees, or any other pests. There are some stink bugs in the house at this time of year-- as forewarned-- but that is life in the woods. Our house manager does a thorough inspection and cleaning prior to every guest's stay to insure these benign pests are kept to a minimum. (2) The second floor A/C unit was working just prior to this guest's stay, so we were surprised that it failed and we felt badly that it allowed the upstairs to warm up that much during that first hot day of the season. However, the weather was in the 60's that evening and the first floor A/C unit was working fine, so a few open windows and the additional fans should have made the house comfortable overnight. To prevent future issues and ensure our summer guests do not encounter A/C problems, we are replacing the whole unit this week. And for the record, we did give these guests a partial refund for the inconvenience. (3) The directions we provide guests are very specific and have guided hundreds of people to our home safely and soundly. It is a rural area, without street lighting, and we are on a gravel road. Typically, the rare person who has trouble finding it is the one who doesn't read the directions or uses GPS against our advice, but we can understand how driving there for the first time in the pitch dark could make it more of a challenge. (4) The house has ample lighting. In the Great Room alone there are six reading lights, a 10-light chandelier, and recessed bookcase lighting! Every bedroom has reading lights by the beds. The bathrooms all have bright halogen lights above the sink. (Perhaps these guests didn't understand how to use the dimmers that control the brightness.)

Feels like home!

  • 5 of 5

Old Rag Mt Lodge was truly amazing! The house was really well built with a lot of thought to design. Kitchen fully equipped, wrap around deck with lots of tables and seating. Breakfast nook was super cozy. We loved the screened-in porch, but it was too cold for us to enjoy. Master bed with king bed has a deck attached to it...bonus! The vaulted ceiling in the living room with antler chandelier truly makes you feel like you're in a high-end country cabin. Sam and Connie (the manager) were super attentive and responsive to emails prior to our arrival. Super bonus...fresh eggs provided by the hens on the property. We were a group of 6 adults and everyone got to sleep on a true bed. You can fit 4 more people if you really need to (2 on the living room couches and 2 on the upstairs window sill cushioned areas. You can tell that this house is well cared for and maintained as it feels like a "lived-in" home. Thank you, Sam, for being an amazing host! We hope to come back again in the summer if you'd allow us!

When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.

If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.

Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.

If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.

For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.

So much to do in every season!
