About Stephen Dalton

As an architect for 30 years, married to an Italian I wanted to do more than visit Italy. I wanted to experience Italy.

Stephen Dalton purchased this apartment in 2016

Why Stephen Dalton chose Lucca

Located in a building built in the 1500's it has a unique charm and potential to be an amazing property. Completely gutted and renovated I could design it the way I wanted it to look.

What makes this apartment unique

It is right in the City Center, inside the walls and steps away from the best restaurants, shopping, art venues and historic sites. The City wall is a unique feature where you can jog and bike away from cars and view the City below. It is an amazing City.

The property was exactly as Stephen described it. Very convenient for me and my two kids (9 & 6 years old). The flat is very comfortable, well furbished and close to everything.

We walked three days through this wonderful city. Thanks to Stephen we spent an amazing stay here !

High quality accommodation in a vibrant busy area of Lucca. Any noise created by revellers stops around midnight. Not a huge issue. Everyone seems to be enjoying the atmosphere!

Fantastic accommodation and service in the heart of Lucca

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Lucca at Stephen's apartment. The apartment is ultra modern with every amenity possible. Stephen was a fantastic person to deal with before and during our stay. Paola was also lovely, she greets you when you arrive is available if you need help during your stay. I traveled with my friend and her daughter. They stayed in the bedroom and I took the sofa couch. I was completely comfortable there, as if in my own bedroom, too. You can't have a better experience renting an apartment in Lucca! I should know, I have rented 2 previous apartments there! Do not hesitate to book this property.

Apartment in Lucca

  • 4 of 5

We loved Lucca. This was our first visit and it exceeded our expectations.

The flat is very conveniently situated within the walls of the medieval city, which put all of the main sights within walking distance. The flat was comfortable and well equipped with a pleasant outlook over a small square. It was also very convenient for food shopping, with at least a couple of very well stocked groceries within a few steps from the front door.

Our only two difficulties were (1) the somewhat unusual Luchese system of rubbish collection. Despite the guidance offered in the flat we never really mastered this and perhaps a more 'idiot's guide' approach might help others as baffled as we were; and (2) the area between the street door and the old city gates (about 60 yards west - see photo) seems to be a place where students and other young people gather of an evening. There is a craft beer shop there, which seems one of the main draws. While on most evenings the crowd dispersed by about 8 or 9 pm, on Friday and Saturday nights the carousing went on into the early hours of the morning and we found it necessary to close not only the windows but also the heavy wooden shutters in order to reduce the noise to a level that did not prevent sleep.

This might not be an issue for younger visitors, who might well join the throng, but being that bit older, with our partying days behind us, it was a bit of a negative.

Having said all that, it did not detract materially from our stay and we would certainly return to Lucca again in future.

Owner's Response: We appreciate comments from our guests and respect their feedback. Regarding the comment about the street life- this is what we love about Lucca. It’s an active fun city that had The Rolling Stones last year at the Summer Festival and yearly hosts Comics and Games in November- an amazing celebration of comedians, magic, fun and games that draws people of all ages from all over the world. The noise is not a problem for me and my wife who are in our sixties. The young people enjoying the summer evening are respectful, fun and wonderful. Lucca in the summer is active until 10 PM at restaurants and bars and it’s what we love about the city. I just wanted to put the guests comments in perspective.

Hoping to stay again someday!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated with everything we needed for our stay. Across the street is a nice bar (cafe) to have our evening Aperitivo, where we enjoyed people watching and planning our next day and we could still pickup the wifi from the apartment. Paula was a great hostess; showed us around the apartment and gave us some good recommendations for eating out. We really like the town of Lucca so if we ever get the chance to return we hope to stay at this apartment.

Lucca is a charming Tuscan city with walls surrounding it built in 1513. Inside the walls are great restaurants, high end shops, art venues, theater and historic homes. Everything you need is within walking distance.

Nearby is Florence (1 hour) and the beaches of Forte di Marmi (30 minutes away) as well as wineries of Tuscany and The Mall, a virtual Disney World of the best outlet shops (Prada, Gucci, Michael Kors, Yves St Lauren, Burberry, Fendi, Ferragamo, etc.).

Public parking is available near the apartment, although it can get busy on the weekend. There are buses and a train that can take you to Florence, Rome or anywhere else in Italy you want. Florence is the best connection for the fast train to Rome and Venice.
