About Kimberly Mackey
I, Kimberly, came to Durago in 1993 to recuperate from a car accident at my high school friend's bed and breakfast. I had plans to return to the corporate life in FL but fell in love with this darling mountain town and lifestyle. I bought a Deli at Purgatory Ski Resort in 1995. This was a quite an adventure for me since my background was in business and healthcare. But a great decision since I met my future husband "Mac" Mackey. He was retired and was living his dream as ski instructor. We both had years of working and playing at this wonderful ski resort. Eventually, we started our vacation rental property management company and at times managed up to 27 properties. We have semi retired now and just manage our own properties. We are enjoying our "backyard" of incredible beauty and the historic and wonderful Durango. After big city living (Chicago for Mac and Miami and San Francisco for me) - we think we are in paradise!
Why Kimberly Mackey chose Durango
We purchased this cute log cabin approx 20 years ago. This was one of those hard to find log cabins in the woods. Its location in the the beautiful north county area was perfect. We both dreamed of a log cabin in Colorado mountains. This is it!
What makes this Cabin unique
The Mackey Log Cabin is a perfect 4 season property. Only 6 miles from the ski resort - it offers a winter wonderland. In summer, the 5 minute drive (or 20 minute hike) to beautiful Electra Lake makes it ideal. While only 20 minutes from downtown Durango, it is often 8-10 degrees cooler than downtown and is surround by beautiful woods and scenic mountains.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Fantastic location in a real log cabin
We absolutely loved our stay at this cabin!!
This is the best VRBO stay we have had.
We loved the location - up in the morning, having coffee on the porch, watching the sun reflect off the great rock faces through the pines and fur trees and then sitting in the hot tub in the evening watching the moon and stars were just daily treats.
It was very peaceful and the setting is wonderful and private.
The cabin is well furnished and tastefully decorated.
Kimberly was very good at communicating about the resources around the area.
There were plenty of brochures on all of the things to do and places to visit in the surrounding areas.
The beds were comfortable and the cabin was home to us for a week. We loved it!!
We fortunately only had rain once but were able to enjoy the outdoors sitting on the covered porch.
It is perfectly situated between Durango and Silverton and we only had to drive a few miles to the Purgatory Ski Resort to pick up our jeep rental.
I read all of the reviews and we did not have a single issue to complain about. They even leave a book for you to tell them if there are any maintenance issues that they might not know about - pretty smart idea to keep on top of things when you aren't there to know about them.
All in all, this place is a little sliver of heaven on earth and we sure hope to come back again some day.
Thanks so much for letting us enjoy your wonderful cabin.
You won’t regret the Mackey Cabin!
My husband and our two young children had the pleasure of staying at the lovely Mackey Cabin for six nights in early September 2019. I am one to research the heck out of a property before we book. I book well in advance and do the research because I want to ensure we choose a perfect property that works for our whole family. I read through every single review before I book, and I was confident in our choice prior to arrival. However, this property exceeded our expectations. Kimberly was a warm host and was kind enough to leave the light on for our arrival, knowing we’d be arriving after dark. She checked in on us the day of arrival to provide some tips and was extremely pleasant and easy to work with. This is a beautiful and unique property that is very private, well-stocked, and with lovely views. You will love it if you’re looking for a place to escape. Its proximity to Durango is perfect, not too close and not too far, an easy jaunt into town. Purgatory is five minutes away. The property is very clean! Part of the reason this is possible is that you’re asked to take your shoes off at the door. For someone with a young walker/crawler, this made me feel at ease that the carpeting was clean and I appreciated the rule. If you like peace and quiet, look no further as there will be no noisy neighbors or intrusive properties up against you here. Lastly, if you’re like me and read all the reviews, you’ll see a few minor complaints that I hope I can address and ease your worries about. 1.) Privacy - previous reviewer stated the property wasn’t private as it was sandwiched between two roads. I’m here to tell you after staying here for several nights, I saw ONE car the entire time I was there. These roads are rural and not used, rest assured the property is absolutely PRIVATE. 2.) Previous reviewer stated the hot tub isn’t private. The only thing visible from the hot tub is a neighbor’s window-less garage, and that’s only if you’re standing next to it. Rest assured, the hot tub is as PRIVATE as it gets. 3.) Furniture not large enough. Our family of four had no problems, in fact we had more than enough space for all of us to be comfortable, whether it be in the bedrooms, the main living area, dining area, or several outside areas. Do not let these minor complaints deter you! This is a perfect rental, I have zero complaints (and we’re picky!) My only hope is that we’ll be fortunate enough to make some more great memories at the Mackey cabin again.
Thank you, Lauren, for taking the time to write such kind words. So glad you loved our cabin and area as much as we do. You and your family were a pleasure to host.
Excellent log cabin home in the perfect near-Durango location
Our stay in Kimberley's log cabin home outside of Durango was more than perfect. Located about half way between Durango and Silverton, our daily excursions were easy to get to. Especially Trimble hot springs which we enjoyed twice. Her 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home was extra roomy for my family of 4. Such cute cabin decor, comfy beds and sitting area. The kitchen was well stocked with basics (coffee, filters, condiments) which were so helpful for our 4-night stay. However, I can't speak enough about the quietness of the home's location in the San Juan National Forest. Gorgeous mountain and forest views from all sides. My husband and I really enjoyed morning coffee out on the front deck watching the birds. In the evenings we all loved sitting in the hot tub watching the stars and listening to forest sounds. Lake Electra is a very short drive from the cabin and worth hanging out at. There is a canoe included that we didn't have the time to enjoy. Lake Haviland is also a very short drive. I highly recommend the horse stables there for a nature horse ride with a guide. A 45 minute drive to Silverton and the Old Hundred Gold Mine. A 20 minute drive to Durango. Also close enough to go to Mesa Verde National Park. Very close to Purgatory Ski Resort. Kimberley was so helpful in giving ideas of what to do and where to eat and grocery shop prior to our arrival. She is a true hostess and one I wouldn't hesitate to rent from again. Her Durango cabin made our road trip to New Mexico and Colorado just perfect. It was the highlight for all of us! Note that the cabin is located in a very hilly area with gravel roads. They were easy to drive in during the summer with our small SUV.
Not as Expected
We had expected a cabin that was more private, however it is located just above a fork in the road so you have a road on either side of the property. And you couldn't really hike to Electra Lake legally, as the faint trail that we could find was not clearly marked and required trespassing on someone else's property. Unfortunately, the cabin was also smaller than expected so it felt kind of cramped, especially the upstairs shower. (Maybe less furniture would help.) It would have been helpful to know that there would not be any Aluminum foil or plastic wrap/bags so we could have brought our own and that the dishwasher needed to be rolled over to the kitchen sink to be used as that was kind of a pain. The cabin could use some updating (like replacing the chipped dishes, adding a Bluetooth speaker system and room-darkening blinds) but it did have a great location, close to Purgatory ski area which was really fun even in the summer.
We are sorry you found our cabin not quite what you were expecting. The square footage is listed on the site along with pictures. The cabin is on a private road and the road behind it is a dead private one with only three homes and those folks are not even there all the time. We did have a section in the welcome book that explains Electra Lake and that you cannot hike in there other than going through the main gate. Our directions do tell guests specifically under "What you might want to bring" that you might want to bring alum foil or saran wrap. We have never had a complaint about having to roll the dishwasher or dishes but we appreciate your thoughts.
Comfortable home near Purgatory
The Mackey Cabin was a cozy spot just a few miles from Purgatory Resort. It made a great bad for our time exploring Durango and Mesa Verde. The cabin Is in a secluded neighborhood at 8500’+ surrounded by the beautiful San Juan Forest, giving it true mountain getaway feeling. Kitchen was well equipped, Internet was fast, and communication with the owner was thorough. My kids enjoyed the bunk bed and hot tub.
We enjoyed our stay!
