Casa Canuck has an amazing combination of proximity, seclusion and complimentary conveniences that other rentals just don't have! Located in West End, on the water at Mangrove Bight, you have only a short walk to the lively center of West End, or to some of the best snorkeling in the world at Half Moon Bay. At home, you can unwind in the quiet and peaceful setting of a tropical oasis, watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, geckos, and other wildlife.
You will be able to relax in your suite or on your private deck overlooking the mangroves and jungle greenery. You can also enjoy direct water access or an evening under the stars on Mangrove Bight from our private dock, and even arrange to be picked up right from the dock for many water activities.
A one-minute walk gets you onto the newly paved West End road where you can find the many dive shops, fishing charters, dining options, shops and nightlife that unique West End offers. We are also ideally located for people looking for accomodations while completing dive courses. If you plan on diving, we highly recommend Coconut Tree Divers. They run a good operation and are about two blocks away. You can find them easily on the Internet.
We live upstairs full-time, so we are close by if you need anything, but we fully respect our guests' privacy. We are regular friendly people and would also enjoy sharing a visit and a beverage on the dock if you like!
During our time living here, we have learned about good restaurants, things to do, places to go and people that can help you with your Roatan vacation 'bucket list'. Let us know what you are interested in, and we will do our best to get you in contact with the right people.
Each of our two suites has a queen bed, full bath, private east-side deck, shared west-side deck, ceiling fans, flat-screen cable TV, internet, 2-burner cooktop, microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, water dispenser and drinking water, bistro table and chairs and AC. There is a nice hammock and two zero-G recliner lawn chairs on your private deck, and night security on the property. We also have a propane BBQ/grill for guest use.
Our guests' comfort and relaxation is our main priority! We want your stay to be restful and easy, so we have thought of the little conveniences for you. Coffee? Salt and Pepper? Cold beverages in the fridge when you arrive? We thought of that! Flashlight? Umbrellas? Clothesline? We thought of that, too. Liquid Tide for hand washables? Hangers? Laundry basket? You bet. Scissors? Baggies? Can opener? Yes, even those! Wine glasses? Corkscrew? Candles? Definitely. There is an extra rod in the shower for hanging bathing suits, etc, free snorkel gear for you to borrow, free access to kayaks, and a local cell phone for you to use while you are here. Personal laundry can be arranged for a fee, and guests staying more than 12 days receive complimentary weekly maid service. 'Yes, we thought of that!' And if we didn't, please let us know.
AIRPORT / FERRY PICKUP: Let us know your arrival details and we will be at the airport or ferry to pick you up. We include a cold beer or soda or water (let us know your preference), a stop at the supermarket if you wish, and a comfortable short ride to Casa Canuck. Pickup and return is FREE for all of our guests.
We have a generator and live on-site, so you will still have a working water system and fridge (once we start the generator) if the power goes out.
We also have an additional single mattress for a third guest for an additional $25 per night.
Please, no smoking in or near the building. We love animals, but guests must not bring pets. We love children, too, but our suites are not suitable for youngsters. And if you enjoy other music besides the birds, the breeze, the boats and the seas, we ask that you keep your volume low. (Unless it is Salsa music, in which case you just need to invite us to the party!)
We are from Northern Alberta, Canada and have four sons from age 21 to 29. Joan is a teacher, and Stan is 'Stan the Duct Man' - our HVAC and plumbing company in Northern Alberta.
Joan Cooke and Stan Wall purchased this studio in 2012
In April of 2011, we came to Roatan for a single day during a cruise. There was just something about this beautiful little island that drew us back, and in April of 2012 we came for a week vacation, looked at a few places with a realtor 'just for fun', and somehow ended up owning this fantastic house in this amazing location. We moved here to our main house to stay in July of 2013, and will continue renting our studios.
The two best feature of our studios are the location and our free amenities! We are a very short walk from the best diving and snorkeling in the world, minutes from famous West End, but in a very quiet and private corner of the neighborhood. We have a mangrove and a dock on the east side of our yard, jungle to the south, a banana-filled yard to the west, and wonderful neighbors to the north. And 'We thought of that!' is how we describe our free extras.
Joan our host quickly made us feel at home. We were met at the airport with a cold beer and were able to do some grocery shopping on the way to West End. Highlights of our stay were the early morning swims at Half Moon Bay resort, happy hour on the dock, runs along the beach to West Bay and a visit to the Monkey and Sloth Hangout at French Key up island. Our larger balcony in Apartment 12 B was shaded and cool. The suite is quiet and away from West End while being only 5 minutes walk away. The suite is small, a small table on the balcony was used for our meals. Preparation of meals was awkward ( small area) but doable. Joan made sure we had everything we needed. Use of insect repellent is important as mosquitos, sand flies and ants can be a real bother. We came home feeling well rested and refreshed . A great holiday.
Best. Hosts. Ever. Joan and Stan have a way of making all of their guests feel at home. They are extremely accommodating, providing transportation for grocery shopping and errands, arranging for tours, doing laundry, taking guests snorkeling. Group events also were planned (optional) but it was a great way to meet the other guests. Setting is a shaded area of mangrove trees, no swimming here, but available nearby. The area also feels about 10 degrees cooler because of the shade. Each unit has it's own balcony for relaxing. Rooms are adequately furnished for cooking meals, and barbeque grill is also available. Is a short walk to downtown. Joan was very informative about local routines and events. Enjoyed watching the baby chicks grow!! A very pleasant stay!
From the minute we saw Stan's smiling face holding the Casa Canuck sign with our names on it at the airport we knew it was going to be everything we thought it would be. Stan had a cold beer for us and stopped at the grocery store for us to pick up the things we would need for our stay. Staying at Casa Canuck was so relaxing, it felt like home and Joan and Stan made us feel we were visiting old friends. We were welcomed into their home and visited with them often they shared so much about the island and the people. Our unit was immaculate had everything you needed. Great shower, nice private deck very comfortable. Everything was within walking distance, so many restaurants and the food was fantastic didn't matter where we ate and the service staff where so friendly and accommodating. We quickly became regulars at Sundowners for happy hour. We met so many nice people, make sure you try a Monkey La La . Snorkelling was fantastic, we had a 5 minute walk from Casa Canuck to great snorkelling. We went on an island tour, diving at Jackson Dive Centre, fishing and a day trip to West Bay. This is a place we definitely would return to only next time I'll bring really good bug repellent, the bugs absolutely loved me.. That was the only down side to the natural beauty and wildlife we encountered. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Joan and Stan... Thank you for everything!
Stan drove us to their place with a cold beer and a stop at the grocery store. We didn't eat half the food or drinks we bought but did cook breakfast.. - too many wonderful other places to eat. Loved the immense shower and the location - so easy to get to the beach, sit on the dock, walk into town, go find a restaurant or bar!! My 18-yr-old grandson got his scuba diving open-water certification thru Jackson Dive Center - they were great. Occasional problems with electrical power and Wi-Fi, but HEY we're on vacation. The only down side for me was the terrible insect bites I got while in ROATAN - they must love my "sweet blood". And don't forget to get a Monkey La La drink, you won't be sorry!! Wonderful place to stay and you couldn't ask for better hosts.....
Casa Canuck is a great stay. Stan and Joan (your hosts) quickly become your family. They picked us up at the airport, took us grocery shopping before introducing us to our home. We stayed for 2 months. When we realized the size limitations of our suite they went out of their way to make us comfortable and make the suite work. The room was immaculate, and they had housekeepers come weekly. The yard is always neat and clean. The location of Casa Canuck is amazing. Within a three minute walk there is a great grocery store, restaurants, dive shops, and scooter rentals. Do yourself a favour, rent a scooter and explore the beautiful island.
Restaurants are reasonably priced, street food is insanely cheap and both are great. keep walking down that road and you will find new experiences every day!
Roatan has fantastic diving, but West End and West Bay have the best snorkelling that we have ever experienced. We saw more sea life snorkelling than we did diving!
The people truly make your stay. The residents of the island are so friendly and caring...can't wait to come back!
The property is conveniently located in a quiet area within a short walk to West End and a short water taxi ride to West Bay. The access to the owners dock and kayaks on Mangrove Bight were greatly appreciated. One of the owners was waiting for us with drinks when we exited the airport and took us on a grocery shopping trip on the way back to the property. They provided excellent guidance on restaurants, dive shops and anything else we had questions about and were very helpful with any requests. We rented both of the Casa Canuck units and they were clean, well maintained and made our stay very enjoyable. We spent many hours relaxing in the hammocks on the decks. We would highly recommend the property and will return.
Roatan is one of the best places in the world for diving and snorkeling. Half Moon Bay, ranked in the top 5 in the world, is just a two minute walk from our home.
