Casa Canuck has an amazing combination of proximity, seclusion and complimentary conveniences that other rentals just don't have! Located in West End, on the water at Mangrove Bight, you have only a short walk to the lively center of West End, or to some of the best snorkeling in the world at Half Moon Bay. At home, you can unwind in the quiet and peaceful setting of a tropical oasis, watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, geckos, and other wildlife.
You will be able to relax in your suite or on your private deck overlooking the mangroves and jungle greenery. You can also enjoy direct water access or an evening under the stars on Mangrove Bight from our private dock, and even arrange to be picked up right from the dock for many water activities.
A one-minute walk gets you onto the newly paved West End road where you can find the many dive shops, fishing charters, dining options, shops and nightlife that unique West End offers. We are also ideally located for people looking for accomodations while completing dive courses. If you plan on diving, we highly recommend Jackson's Dive Center. Rino (pronounced Reeno) and crew run a good operation and are less than a block away. You can find them easily on the Internet.
We live upstairs full-time, so we are close by if you need anything, but we fully respect our guests' privacy. We are regular friendly people and would also enjoy sharing a visit and a beverage on the dock if you like!
During our time living here, we have learned about good restaurants, things to do, places to go and people that can help you with your Roatan vacation 'bucket list'. Let us know what you are interested in, and we will do our best to get you in contact with the right people.
Each of our two suites has a queen bed, full bath, private east-side deck, shared west-side deck, ceiling fans, cable TV, internet, 2-burner cooktop, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, water dispenser and drinking water, writing desk, bistro table and chairs and AC. There is a nice hammock and two adirondack chairs on your private deck, and night security on the property.
Our guests' comfort and relaxation is our main priority! We want your stay to be restful and easy, so we have thought of the little conveniences for you. Coffee? Salt and Pepper? Cold beverages in the fridge when you arrive? We thought of that! Flashlight? Umbrellas? Clothesline? We thought of that, too. Liquid Tide for hand washables? Hangers? Laundry basket? You bet. Scissors? Baggies? Can opener? Yes, even those! Wine glasses? Corkscrew? Candles? Definitely. There is an extra rod in the shower for hanging bathing suits, etc, free snorkel gear for you to borrow, free access to kayaks, and a local cell phone for you to use while you are here. Personal laundry can be arranged for $5 per load. 'Yes, we thought of that!' And if we didn't, please let us know.
AIRPORT / FERRY PICKUP: Let us know your arrival details and we will be at the airport or ferry to pick you up. We include a cold beer or soda or water (let us know your preference), a stop at the supermarket if you wish, and a comfortable short ride to Casa Canuck. Pickup and return is FREE for all of our guests.
We have a generator and live on-site, so you will still have a working water system and fridge (once we start the generator) if the power goes out.
We also have an additional single mattress for a third guest for an additional $25 per night.
Please, no smoking in or near the building. We love animals, but guests must not bring pets. We love children, too, but our suites are not suitable for youngsters. And if you enjoy other music besides the birds, the breeze, the boats and the seas, we ask that you keep your volume low. (Unless it is Salsa music, in which case you just need to invite us to the party!)
We are from Northern Alberta, Canada and have four sons from age 21 to 29. Joan is a teacher, and Stan is 'Stan the Duct Man' - our HVAC and plumbing company in Northern Alberta.
Joan Cooke and Stan Wall purchased this studio in 2012
In April of 2011, we came to Roatan for a single day during a cruise. There was just something about this beautiful little island that drew us back, and in April of 2012 we came for a week vacation, looked at a few places with a realtor 'just for fun', and somehow ended up owning this fantastic house in this amazing location. We moved here to our main house to stay in July of 2013, and will continue renting our studios.
The two best feature of our studios are the location and our free amenities! We are a very short walk from the best diving and snorkeling in the world, minutes from famous West End, but in a very quiet and private corner of the neighborhood. We have a mangrove and a dock on the east side of our yard, jungle to the south, a banana-filled yard to the west, and wonderful neighbors to the north. And 'We thought of that!' is how we describe our free extras.
We stayed at Casa Canuck for a week in April 2016. Although Stan was away, Joan helped us feel welcome, taking us on an early morning snorkel at Half Moon Bay. The apartment was comfortable and well appointed. Restaurants, bars and snorkelling are only a short walk away. The week just flew by. There is so much to see and do in Roatan. Casa Canuck was "our home away from home." We would highly recommend this location as a couples getaway, whether you are a certified diver or snorkeler.
The hosts were fantastic! Stan was patiently waiting for us as it took 2 hours to go through customs. He even had cold beverages waiting for us. He showed us through the grocery on the way to the apt. The apartment was clean and everything was great as advertised. They even put out a hummingbird feeder on the balcony. We enjoyed watching them from the hammock on the lovely balcony. We also used the private deck quite a few times and the kayaks. Stan and Joan were super helpful and friendly. They were always available to answer questions and help us out. They gave us food recommendations, set up a ziplining tour of Gumbalimba Park for us and even spent the day scootering with us showing us around the island. They recommended a friendly dive shop, Scuba Roatan, which we were extremely happy with. The location was fantastic. It was a short walking distance to the main drag in West End. We also went to West Bay and were unimpressed so quickly came back to West End which was more chill and local. After our adventures, Joan took us to the airport and saw us off with a friendly hug. If we come back to Roatan, we will definitely stay with them again. Joan and Stan went above and beyond to make out stay wonderful. We highly recommend Casa Canuck! You won't regret it!
We stayed at Casa Canuck for a month and were very happy with our accommodations and location. Everything was as advertised, from airport pick-up to a well-stocked suite, including flashlights, lots of towels, shopping bags, umbrellas, really everything you needed. The room has a small kitchenette, good air-flow, ceiling and floor fans, A/C (which we really didn't need) lots of hot water and great water pressure in the large shower. The bed was very comfy and the large covered dock came with two chairs and a hammock.
Stan and Joan went above and beyond, even starting the generator and inviting us to their upstairs apartment to watch the Superbowl after the power went out. On another occasion, one of the other guests was having a milestone birthday so they invited us all upstairs to play card games and have chocolate cake!
Casa Canuck is very close to shops, a grocery store, many restaurants and bars and beautiful, quiet beaches, yet it is a very quiet spot in a small residential area. Snorkeling is literally around the corner, about a 2-minute walk to Half Moon Bay. The price is very reasonable and we would not hesitate to recommend Casa Canuck to anyone. We hope to be back someday soon.
We stayed in Suite B at Casa Canuck from Jan 31-Mar 2, 2016 and had a great experience. Everything is as advertised: Stan and Joan picked us up at the airport with a cold beer, took us grocery shopping on the way home and went above and beyond to make our stay fun and memorable. When the power went out during the Superbowl, they fired up the generator and took us up to their apartment to watch (even though they aren't football fans) and then fed us supper! When one of the guests in the other suite had a birthday, we were all invited up to play card games and have cake. They are excellent hosts. As far as the suite itself is concerned, they truly have thought of everything: lots of towels, keys with flashlights attached, umbrellas, well-stocked kitchen, etc. It is comfortable, with a small kitchenette, a big covered private deck and lots of air-flow. With ceiling and floor fans, we only used the AC for about 20 minutes during our entire stay. The bed is comfy, there is lots of hot water and great water pressure in the shower. The location can't be beat: less than a five-minute walk to snorkeling, beaches, the grocery store and numerous bars, restaurants and shops. It is in a very quiet location---no traffic noise or loud music, just some dogs and roosters as there are everywhere in Latin America. We would not hesitate to recommend Casa Canuck to anyone and hope to be back some day soon.
Everything at Casa Canuck was as advertised. Stan picked us up at the airport with cold beer, and stopped at the grocery store so we could pick anything up we needed before arriving at the apartment. The property was well-maintained, and Stan and Joan thought of everything we could possibly need during our stay (drinks, coffee, towels, sheets, cell phone, wifi, tv, maps, things to do (very nice booklet with restaurants, things to do, etc)). They also let us use snorkel gear and kayaks for the duration of our stay. The apartment is located within a short walk from Half Moon Bay, which is the best snorkeling on the island, and free. We went snorkeling almost every morning-most days there were no other people there until mid-morning. We enjoyed kayaking to Anthony's Key and were able to see dolphins once we got there. We also enjoyed great food-everything is in walking distance from Stan and Joan's house. One day we rented a scooter and traveled to many different beaches along the island-definitely recommend doing this-the landscape is beautiful. Additionally, we enjoyed our visit to Gumbalimba park, where we were able to hold birds and monkeys, and see many iguanas. I would absolutely book a trip here, again!
Owners were extremely accommodating, gracious, and helpful - No stone left unturned, providing for your every need. Nicest place I've stayed in C.A. Private getaway on the water that is just steps away from the beach, snorkeling, dining, dive shops and beverages. Highly recommend this place.
Roatan is one of the best places in the world for diving and snorkeling. Half Moon Bay, ranked in the top 5 in the world, is just a two minute walk from our home.
