About Michael VanCuren

My wife and I have lived on the Outer Banks for over 30 years. We love the beach and own several rental properties. Of all our properties, Sails Commission is our favorite and the one we use as our home away from home. You may ask why we need a home away from home while living on the Outer Banks. Once you have spent your vacation at this house you will see why. This house is our refuge from the real world. Although the house is rented most of the time, we love the Outer Banks in the fall and winter. We spend many days wrapped up on the front deck enjoying the view. We may even get lucky and catch a view of an occasional whale traveling north.

But if you are looking for a lot of fancy amenities this cottage is not for you. It is priced affordable so that the smaller families can be this close to the beach.

A Perfect Birthday Visit

My daughters and I enjoyed our visit to the Outer Banks, the first for all of us. Your home was very nice, We enjoyed watching the ocean and hearing the roar of the waves at night as we slept. We would not hesitate to visit this property again.

Amazing Vacation

Our family went to Nags Head for our spring break vacation this year (April 9-16). We live in Southern California and although we have beautiful beaches here, my husband and I are from Texas and love the friendliness of the South and the beautiful greenery North Carolina has to offer. There were so many things we loved about this property with only a few we had to adjust to so it's probably easier to simply list them.

PROS

On the Beach: The property is located on the beach and offers amazing views from the living room, downstairs family room, and downstairs bedroom. We thoroughly enjoyed opening the sliding doors, letting the breeze flow throughout the house, and being able to watch the kids playing in the sand and watching dolphins!

The Owner: Michael is wonderful! We booked his place 8 months before our actual trip. He communicated with me whenever I had any questions or concerns and was readily available to assist when needed.

Location: Since this was our first trip to OBX, we weren't familiar with the area. While we were there, we drove to Duck, Kill Devil Hills, and Hatteras. Of all the places we visited, we loved Nags Head the best. Duck was too far North, Kill Devil Hills was awesome but a bit too commercial, and Hatteras was too far South and remote. Please keep in mind - we were there at (barely) the beginning of the season so I can imagine that in the height of summer, the dynamics of the individual cities will change.

OCEAN BREEZES

Since we there in early-to-mid April, we had no need for the air conditioner. The weather was perfectly suited for keeping the windows and sliding doors open to let the breeze flow. This was only a problem for someone staying in the upstairs bedroom where all three windows are unable to open as they are solid glass and that room would get a bit warm. If it's a problem for anyone, you can always turn on the a/c.

CONS

Honestly, there aren't many. There were 7 of us staying at the house so all bedrooms were occupied. The owner will communicate with you, prior to arrival, that you need to provide your own linens/towels, paper products, soap, trash bags, etc. Food Lion is 2 miles away and there is a local market around the corner.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I highly recommend staying at this lovely home - We certainly want to come back! Another favorite of ours was the OBX Pier which was a lot of fun with a restaurant and music. This will be at trip we remember and will want to recreate with our family.

Beautiful Place on the Ocean

My family had a wonderful time staying in this beautiful home. We actually had a rehearsal dinner for my son and his future wife. It was the perfect place with everything you could possibly need and very comfortable in all ways. I felt like this was a wonderful treasure found at the beach!

Our Best Beach Rental Ever

We recently spent Thanksgiving week at the VanCurans' gem of a beachfront home, Sail's Commission. We could not have been happier, and hope to return in future. Since other reviews describe the amenities and bright, tasteful decor, we'll just offer a few tips on location and layout that may help you plan a visit:

LOCATION

The house is in a quiet residential neighborhood about a mile south of the S64 bridge from Roanoke Island. (A variety of restaurants and shopping are available north of the bridge, just a few minutes' drive away.) Neighbors are far enough away to provide real privacy. Best of all, the houses to either side are set back so they don't obstruct the ocean view. The house hugs the back side of 10-foot high dunes, which provide protection from waves crashing as close as 60 or 70 feet away at high tide. At low tide the beach is a broad expanse of firm, clean white sand with occasional rich shell patches (mostly oysters, clams, pectens, and whelks while we were there). Gorgeous sunrises, white caps, grazing dolphins, and picturesque fishing boats round out the view.

LAYOUT

There are two living levels above an open garage level. Two single-flight outdoor staircases lead up from the garage to a comfortably wide deck and attached BBQ deck surrounding the lower living level. This deck nestles into the dunces with nice partial ocean views. The main entry door has a convenient push-button number code lock, so no physical keys are needed. It opens into a cozy sitting room with sliding glass doors that also open onto the deck. A short hallway leads to three bedrooms and a bathroom. These are cleverly arranged for maximum privacy by having no shared walls between any bedrooms. One bedroom has sliding glass doors opening onto the ocean side deck. Views from the other bedrooms are more limited.

An interior single-flight staircase leads to the upper living level. Its landing is perfectly situated for easy access to all rooms on this level: living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and one bedroom. The bedroom is set back in a corner behind the bathroom and staircase, again providing some privacy from activities in the main living spaces. Magnificent ocean views fill the large windows and sliding doors that extend across the entire living room and dining room. The sliding doors open onto a 7 or 8-ft wide deck that runs the length of the house. Dimensions and viewing angles are such that the deck does not obstruct the ocean view.

Although my cottage may be considered off the beaten path, it is still close to all major attractions such as The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Pirates Cove Marina and much more. You are also in close driving range to many great restaurants and shopping. The convenient pedestrian path at the end of the driveway is great for bikers, joggers, or just a casual walk.

Cancellation Policy:

13. HURRICANE OR STORM POLICY: No refunds will be given unless:
a. The National Weather Service orders mandatory evacuation in a "Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning area" and/or a "mandatory evacuation order" has been issued for the Tropical Storm/Hurricane Warning" area of residence of a vacationing guest. The day that the National Weather Service orders a mandatory evacuation order in a "Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning," area, we will refund:

a. Any unused portion of rent from a guest currently registered,

b. Any unused portion of rent from a guest that is scheduled to arrive, and wants to shorten their stay, to arrive after the Hurricane Warning is lifted; and

c. Any advance rents collected or deposited for a reservation that is scheduled to arrive during the "Hurricane Warning" period.

14. CANCELLATION: In the event Tenant cancels his reservation of the leased property
and said property is not re-rented during the entire term set out above, then all rent
consideration previously tendered will be forfeited by Tenant and retained by Owner. All
cancellations must be in writing. If the property is re-rented, then rent, taxes and/or
security deposit consideration previously tendered by Tenant will be refunded to him,
less a service fee of $200.00, plus any other reasonable costs to re-rent the property.
The Tenant shall not assign this agreement or sublet the property in whole or in part. All
sublets must be handled directly by property owner.
