Perfect New Year's Eve and Birthday Venue

  • 5 of 5

I "blessed" my daughter with a December 31 birthday and upon the birth of my grandson, I delegated myself her New Year's Eve/birthday sitter for as long as necessary! Well, this year was my 17th year of having New Years Eve with my grandson and also her 40th birthday....thus, a celebration was in order! :)

( Not counting on an 18 yr old spending NY Eve with his Grandma ! ) As all my family...except myself...reside in TC and Lake Ann, it only made sense to bring the party here. But where? And then I found High Lake Lodge on VRBO and the most gracious hostess in Diana Wright. A more perfect, accommodating, spacious, age-appropriate, equipped, cozy and beautiful venue could not have been found! Diana met us upon our arrival to show us the home and amenities and checked in once, by text, to be sure all was going well on the week-end. The layout of the lodge provided room to spread out, have an open house, buffet, birthday, various areas to visit and hang out, play games, without ever feeling crowded! My grandsons and many of their friends came and went but not without shoveling, hooking up lighting and making a skating rink on the lake where hockey nets and pucks were in motion all week-end! When needing a break to get warm, they surrounded the pool table, bumper pool and foosball tables in the lower level. Flat screen TV's downstairs/upstairs kept holiday football and hockey games playing as well as the celebratory countdown to 2017! As my family was local, not everyone spent the nights (stayed Friday to Monday ) but there was plenty of bedding for tired hockey players/friends who chose ( and I insisted ) not to drive.

Like other reviews, the interior of High Lake Lodge is incomprehensible from the outside for its size and beautiful decor....honestly, a cot can fit inside the showers and there are 3 completely equipped kitchens with refrigerators / ovens / gratefully easy it made hosting a party!

I excitedly and appreciatively recommend this property/home to fulfill any family gathering expectations and beyond! Remember this is a winter review and their facilities for summer enjoyment look amazing! Thank you, Diana and owners, for the gift of memories that High Lake Lodge gave my family for this very special occasion!

Much Bigger Than It Looks!

  • 5 of 5

The place is massive! The pictures don't do it justice! All the fixtures, kitchens, bathrooms are high end and beautiful. I would definitely rent this cabin again. It would be perfect for 2 families because there are 2 completely separate apartments/sides with their own kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The common room down stairs is large and was a great place for everyone to hang out. The owner was extremely welcoming and easy to work worth too!

Memories, Memories, Memories!

  • 5 of 5

Not much more I can say about this wonderful place that hasn't already been said. We gathered our five adult children, two sons-in-law and two young grandchildren from California and Georgia to create new memories in Northern Michigan where my husband spent many summers as a kid. My husband's brother and his wife and their adult daughter joined us for a couple of nights too. Twelve adults and two children, and we couldn't have asked for a better place for all of us to stay comfortably together. The house is stocked with everything you could ever need. The owners thought of every detail, including clothes pins and a sharpie to identify the bath towels! There was something for everyone to do. If you didn't want to spend all day in the lake, there was plenty of room on the beach to set up cornhole or volleyball (bring your own). If you're not an outdoor person, you could stay inside and play pool or foosball or various card games. We visited Sleeping Bear Dunes and Old Mission Point which were both an easy drive from the lodge. Diana was super friendly and accommodating. I don't know if we'll ever make our way back to Northern Michigan, but if we do, you can rest assured we'll know where to stay!

Better than we expected and made our family trip OUTSTANDING!

  • 5 of 5

Thirteen people in my family (7 adults and 6 children) stayed at this property from July 4-July 9, 2016. Diana was great about answering my questions in a timely manner and making the reservation process easy. She even put us in contact with Terri, her neighbor across the lake who took family photos for us during our stay. She made sure the house was stocked with everything we would need.....paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.

The pictures do not do justice to the place! Prior to arriving, we had a difficult time trying to "picture" the layout in our heads. It is basically like two separate "homes" with a shared common basement/walk-out. Each separate home has a full kitchen, full bathroom, master bedroom and futon/pullout sofa in living room. The common basement has a bunk bed (single on top/double on bottom) and 2 futons. Huge kitchen table, ANOTHER kitchen and half bathroom down there.

Our kids LOVED using the kayaks and paddle boat, as well as swimming out to the dock and jumping off the diving board. So much fun! (Although, I admit our southern blood had a hard time handling the cooler water temps.)

The drive into Traverse City is only a few minutes, so you get the best of both worlds---feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere at the lake and being close to groceries, Target and downtown TC with its shops and beautiful views of the bay.

We spent a day at Sleeping Bear Dunes and drove up to Northport to see the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Easy to do in such a central location.

I would highly recommend this property to my friends/family, and I hope we can get back there again!

Feels Like Home

  • 5 of 5

We came with 5 adults and 5 children. This house is stocked with EVERYTHING you need. Ziplocs, paper plates, laundry soap, soap in bathrooms, plenty of towels, pots and pans of all sorts, and some, etc,. These amenities made our stay much more relaxing and homelike. No need to run out for simple day to day necessities. Very clean inside and the decor is warm and inviting. The setup is unique almost like having 3 apartments attached. This house is nestled between trees on a sandy beach. perfect for families with small children. Our kids stayed in the water as long as the weather permitted. The only concern I had, our neighbor's children had caught swimmer's itch during our stay. We were extra cautious with showers and preventing with tons of sunscreen and our kids were fine. There are many birds in the area which are beautiful to listen to and watch, but they do bring along the swimmer's itch. Also, although we did have a sandy beach area and quite clean water, on both sides of our beach it was a little mucky. Despite these issues, we still enjoyed the quietness of the small private lake. Our kids loved jumping off the floating diving board. We had bonfires nightly on the beach, made s'mores, listened to music. We tried to rent a boat for tubing but most places said they would not deliver here because of the steep launch. Lastly, Diana, the owner, was very welcoming and helpful. The house was very comfortable for all us, we had an amazing time, thank you!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review! We're happy you made some great memories at the Lodge. We hope to see you all again. It's too bad swimmers itch is common in the warmer lakes but we keep garden flags and an owl decoy there so the geese and ducks usually don't visit our beach. Have a great year!
