About Patricia & Crofton Held
We moved to Virginia in 1989 in search of more open space and a place to realize our dream of a horse farm. Crofton is retired from the Army Reserves and owns a small local business. Patricia operates the farm, is a freelance writer, and coordinates activities at Rose Cottage. We both enjoy horseback riding and Patricia hikes regularly on the Appalachian Trail.

Why Patricia & Crofton Held chose Goode
We immediately fell in love with the land and people in Bedford County. The area is beautiful and our neighbors are friendly and caring. The wooded trails and nearby dirt road added to the appeal. There is no other place we could imagine living. We moved here with Patricia's mother who was an artist and avid gardener. She designed and built Rose Cottage on the property. The home includes much of her original artwork and the gardens showcase her amazing green thumb.
What makes this House unique
Rose Cottage is designed as a place to relax and get away from a too busy life. While we are within a short drive of Bedford and Lynchburg, most of our guests stay with us to enjoy the surroundings right at Rose Cottage. The views of the the grazing horses, fishing pond, birds and wildlife are never-ending. Rose Cottage, with its gardens, large glassed-in porch, and trails offers a combination of spaces to experience what our farm has to offer.

Very unique, quiet and private.
We were hosted by someone (Patricia) who really cares about the property and our stay. Little things like coffee, creamer and ice cream provided as if we were staying with family.
The property and private garden area are very well maintained, and the view was peaceful. I know we did not fully use all the amenities, but it was a wonderful experience. I would not hesitate to return or recommend to a friend.
A lovely house in a lovely setting.
Rose Cottage is an expansive house surrounded by gardens and trees just down the lane from the property owners. They are friendly, helpful and interesting people who will offer advice yet let you enjoy the house in solitude. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen well appointed, and furnishings include numerous antiques. The sun room was the highlight for us, a great place to take meals or to quietly read. The property is full of friendly animals, including rescue dogs and cats, mules, and older horses the owners care for after a life of racing, event competition, and whatnot. The Blue Ridge Parkway (specifically, the Peaks of Otter) is less than a half-hour away. Two decent grocery stores that we know of are in Bedford. We loved our time there.
We stayed on Friday night through Sunday morning. Patricia took us on a tour and then we settled in. The grounds are really peaceful. The horses are so pretty to just sit and watch.
We were in a good location, 1 hour from Natural Bridge, VA. Plenty of places to eat and things to do in Lynchburg!
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.
A good friend and I rented the Rose Cottage for three nights to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the D-Day celebration in Bedford. The Rose Cottage was the perfect location for us. The house was spacious with large bedrooms and private baths. The kitchen was well stocked along with home made banana bread, wine, eggs, juice, sodas, butter, milk and bottled water. The owners were gracious and welcoming. The 154 acres was beautiful and wonderful to watch the horses and donkeys graze in the pastures. Thank you for making our stay so memorable. We would recommend the Rose Cottage to anyone
House of Horrors
The grounds here are lovely. Truly a beautiful spot. But, OMG! There is not one comfortable piece of furniture to sit on and the mattresses are terrible. I pulled the second bed apart to get some padding under me on the king sized because it was killing me. Not a single comfortable seat inside or out. Beautiful patio overlooking horses and pond-NO Furniture. Out back a gorgeous garden with rock benches and some wrought iron-ugh. Inside it's like a museum and just as uncomfortable. TV is a joke. One sideways from the bed about 19" and another with one hard backed chair in a room where you can watch a movie-alone apparently-sitting straight up in front of another tiny tv. Also they tell you after they get there that the internet doesn't really work-and they are right-could barely get email. The hostess is kind and leaves groceries and banana bread and toothbrushes and stuff, but holy cow-update your house, get a sectional for the wonderful sunroom!! And the kitchen! Do NOT go thinking you can cook here. I have never seen such a poorly stocked kitchen. There is literally nothing to work with! Not even a microwave! The coffee pot is an old percolator! And you have to pile the trash up in the kitchen in your grocery bags because she doesn't provide anyplace to put it. Unreal, gorgeous place, lousy house that could be really, really nice, but isn't! Oh and you get there and find out she wants every window and door kept closed. It was beautiful spring weather and there are lovely french doors-all covered with shades and curtains you can't open. Just awful. I almost strangled on the lack of air and light. Creepy!!! Lots and lots of potential, but does not live up to it in any way.
No home can ever be everything to everyone. So we provide an environment that caters to the finer things in life such as antique furnishings, formal gardens and an arboretum of unusual trees, all nestled in a country setting of mountains and a lake. The cottage has an equipped kitchen and is comfortably climate controlled. We provide easy to follow instructions, advice, and are available to avoid and eliminate any confusion our guests may not be able to deduce.
Gorgeous cottage in the mountains
My boyfriend and I had a really great weekend away here. The house is beautiful and well kept. We enjoyed all of the antiques in the house. The ambience was very charming and relaxing. The grounds have beautiful intricate gardens that were just starting to bloom while we were there. Great bass fishing pond. Lots of wonderful old horses and other animals.
Patricia and Crofton were great hosts and very accommodating. We got great recommendations for restaurants nearby and the fridge was stocked with farm fresh eggs and delicious homemade banana bread.
Will definitely be coming back for another stay.
Home is located on a 150 acre estate with formal gardens, walking trails, fishing pond, horses and friendly miniature donkeys who eagerly await attention from our guests.
