A River Runs By It! This lovely property is located directly on the upper river bank, offering gorgeous views and the gentle sounds of the Pine River. A pretty hiking trail climbs gently to an outlook for views of Vallecito Lake and the mountains. Boating, bike riding, hiking and barbequing from the deck are just a few of the wonderful activities that can be enjoyed from your private paradise in the pines. If you enjoy fishing, some of the best fly fishing in southern Colorado is just a 5-10 walk from your front door to your own private fishing spot on the Pine river. You are only minutes away from Vallecito Lake and the town of Durango has some of the best river rafting and mountain biking in Colorado. Durango is only a thirty minute drive along a beautiful, winding country road, where you are bound to see elk and deer on the rolling hillsides.
This newly built guest quarters was designed for your comfort, convenience, and for the best views! The upper deck is directly off the main floor for relaxing and grilling. With all this available from your quarters; views, flowing water, hiking and hills, you may never need to get in your car! But if you do, in addition to all that Vallecito Lake and Durango offers, your retreat borders the Weminuche Wilderness, the largest in the state of Colorado. Here, you can enjoy beautiful hikes in the forest.
If you want more… Pagosa Springs is a magnificent and scenic sixty mile drive where you can soak in sulfur hot springs.
* Due to the quiet and serene nature of this property please no Harley Davidsons or guns.
I have lived in two of the nicest places in the world! born in Hawaii moving to Durango when I was 15. I have travelled the world but Durango is still at the top of my list. I am an outdoor enthusiast (always a mountain bike on the back of my car).
Chris Zoll purchased this apartment in 2004
I chose this property on the river bank, and built my home and the guest quarters for best views, and it turned out to be better than I could have imagined!
This unique 3 acre property is at the end of a private road. It's such a wonderful spot that sometimes the best way to spend the day is on the deck, in the hammock with a good book, listening to the sounds of the river.
Plus, the owner offers guided mountain biking trips for those interested in exploring some of the best trails in Colorado!
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the area and the rental property was immaculately kept. Very nicely decorated and homey. I would recommend this property to anyone who is coming to this area!
My husband and I stayed at Chris's place to get away from the big city and relax after a big wedding. It was perfect!! We were greeted by Chris and he was more than accommodating to help us with directions and local favorites for all of the activities we had planned. About 10 minutes away from Vallacito Lake, it was an ideal place to go kayaking, hiking, mountain biking or just stroll around Durango. The cabin is nestled in a woodsy subdivision and the sound of the nearby river fills the air. The apartment is spacious and open and we had plenty of room to house all of our equipment. We had an amazing time and will definitely be going back, next time with our dog.
I guess our stay was anomalous. We felt marginally welcome the entire time. I think Chris told us of some local restaurants, but really that was it. He seemed like an ok guy, but was never forthcoming with local info or informative with regard to hiking trails, etc. I actually had to finally ask his neighbor about the immediate area, access to the river, fishing, etc. He also mentioned a large black bear 500-600lbs had walked through his yard and Chris's yard some time prior, and that a mountain lion had lived under a cabin's front patio on the property adjacent----these are things I would have liked to have known before walking my 4 year old down to the river bank on a daily basis.
I felt overall the brochure on VRBO was inaccurate. "Secluded and Peaceful River View Retreat" ---this is a garage apartment 20 steps from the owner's private home. Although the apartment itself is adequately appointed, and clean , it sits directly above the garage of the owner and so near to his house that privacy and seclusion is not available, in my opinion. There is no river front view, the pics from the patio are from the homeowner's patio, not the apartment. The deck on the apartment is about 4'x5', with no light, and has an obscured view of the river. There is barely enough room for two, and you have to crane your neck up and to the left to glimpse a piece of the river perhaps 150 yards away. There is no fire pit, or anywhere available outside to build a campfire for roasting marshmellows/smores. If you have kids, this is an issue. The owner has a large dog, that is nice, but the neighbor has a German Shepherd that is somewhat aggressive, so letting the kids play in the immediate area around the cabin is not an option. The river is a long walk down a switchback road, and access is extremely limited. You have a 20 yard area to fish in, the rest is private property with signs everywhere saying NO TRESPASSING. The neighborhood is kind of trashy with lots of construction ongoing, the entry is not well marked and no assistance was available in locating the property despite booking a week in advance. I called multiple times in an attempt to reach Chris, the days preceding our departure, and he was not available, nor did he phone me back. We booked for 4 days, and I'm glad that's all. Our final night in the area we stayed in another cabin close to Lake Lemon that was far more private and secluded for a few dollars more per night. Just disappointing.
Chris was a wonderful host, and his little garage apartment was perfect for my week long vacation. Everything was exactly as described. The kitchen had almost every utensil this foodie could need. The neighborhood was very quiet, and very dark. The surrounding scenery was beautiful.
I cooked almost every meal, but there are a couple of restaurants not far up the road. There were many excellent hiking tails close by. I also appreciated having somewhere nice to stay that was also pet friendly. My dog really enjoyed herself.
This was our first trip to Colorado and it couldn't have been more perfect. The pictures can't begin to do justice as to how wonderful this place is! Chris was a great host and most helpful with ideas of things to do and places to eat. The scenery was beautiful and the apartment spacious. We truly enjoyed sitting on the deck and listening to the river flowing nearby. It was very peaceful and relaxing and we really hated to leave! We were already planning our next trip back before we were out of the driveway heading home. We hope to stay here again next summer. I can't imagine that you can find a better place!
Chris has a wonderful place, it is secluded as advertised. Quiet, peaceful, great place to go to get away from a busy, hectic life to relax. Place within driving distance to a lot of areas, we enjoyed hot springs in pagoda, mesa verde national park was also enjoyable. Nearby reservoirs for my husband to go fishing. My 8 year granddaughter really enjoyed the dogs. Great place for hikes and nature walks. Thanks Chris for sharing your piece of heaven!!!!! We will try to come back next year.
Located on the edge of the San Juan National Forest. Overlooking the Pine River, 10 minutes from Vallecito lake, 30 minutes from Durango. Fly fishing, Mountain Biking, Hiking are just a few of the many things to take advantage of in the area.
