Upon retiring in California where Robert worked for New United Motors Corp. which made the Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota Corolla. We pulled up stakes and moved to our finca here in Orosi Valley. We are still a work in progress as we try to learn a new language and a slower way of life.
Dorothy Mintz purchased this cottage in 2010
Robert and I fell in love with Costa Rica, Finding our property with the River running through it and the tranquility of the water that we both love, the weather here in Orosi stays between 63 degrees and up to 80 degrees year round. Our finca has mostly lemon trees with a few orange trees as well. Fresh orange juice from our own trees is a special treat.
We remodeled the home that was on this property, our home is a 2 story house the living area on the second floor which puts us high enough to see forever. With the river flowing though the back section of the finca we decided that a cabina by the river would be a great asset and a place for friends and family to stay when they come to visit.
My husband and I stayed at this beautiful property for 7 days for our one year anniversary. We absolutely loved everything about this sweet house and the surrounding property and would recommend this location to anyone. Dorothy and Bob, the owners, live on the property and were available to answer all our questions. They have two sweet dogs who came to visit us every day. Their house is close enough that you can walk up the driveway to speak to them, but is separated from the rental property by orchards and a long driveway, affording plenty of privacy and a nice feeling of seclusion in the wilderness.
The orchards on the property are gorgeous and overflowing with fruit. The Rio Grande de Orosi that runs through the property is lovely to listen to at night (you cannot escape the sound of the river on this property, not that you would want to). The florals attract many different native birds, all beautiful to watch from the jacuzzi or bistro table on the porch. The kitchen was well stocked, the house was very clean with sweet extra touches (tapered candles on the kitchen bar, guide books and brochures to surrounding attractions), and the property was well cared for by Dorothy, Bob, and their gardener.
We highly recommend Orosi valley and the nearby Turrialba for the beauty and the kindness of the inhabitants. We ate at Marisqueria El Puente (an absolutely delicious Soda) about .5KM from the house, overlooking the river, multiple times and enjoyed every meal (open for lunch and supper every day). We also enjoyed La Casona del Cafetal overlooking Lake Cachi (much more pricey but well worth it, the food was delicious and the hiking trails on the property are beautiful). We took a Canyoning/Zip-Lining trip with ExploreNatura in Turrialba, which we highly recommend to anyone who likes an adventure, and we visited the Tapanti National Park twice to hike all the trails. We got to see a lot of wildlife at Tapanti and the surrounding views are gorgeous. The only sight we were slightly disappointed with was Irazu Volcano National Park- we got there early and had great viewing, it's just that the views aren't that exciting and it's a long drive and pretty expensive for 30 minutes worth of looking at two craters. Our suggestion is to go do something in Turrialba and check out the Turrialba volcano en route for a much cooler view of a volcano in Costa Rica, or spend the day at "home" enjoying the lovely property Dorothy and Bob have provided!
My wife and I spent eight days in this lovely, riverside retreat and ended up cancelling our final day exploring so we could enjoy its quietness and beauty. The cabina itself was clean, tastefully decorated and extremely well designed. We found it a perfect size. The kitchen was well stocked; during our stay we cooked our own meals 95% of the time. The furniture was comfortable and well beyond what is normally found in rental units. Oh yes, the flowers and candles were indeed a special touch. The outside deck was fully furnished and is where we began each morning waiting for the sunrise and ended each evening watching fireflies shoot across the nearby flowering shrubs.
The wonderful owners, Dorothy and Bob went beyond the call to make sure we were comfortable and looked after. Dorothy promptly answered all our emails and made some excellent suggestions on things to do and places to visit. Bob volunteered an entire Sunday afternoon to show us around the family orchard and the following day Dorothy arranged a coffee tour. By the way, if you are interested in knowing the science behind growing one of Costa Rica's main exports consider going on a coffee tour. We were even fortunate enough to have an opportunity to plant our own coffee trees.
This is an excellent location for hiking, sightseeing, and adventure exploring. If you like plants and want an introduction to the tropical variety we highly recommend, Lankester Gardens. It turned out to be a highlight of our visit. The nearby canopy tour was excellent and a great value considering it included lunch. There is so much to do here you are limited only by your imagination, so imagine going places and doing things you might not otherwise consider.
We have absolutely no reservations recommending this cabina and its owners. You are in very good hands.
We had a wonderful experience in this little house. I loved the sound of river. Dorothy was very helpful whenever needed. For us, this was a chance to try living in the area, Tico style. Shopping in a super mini mercado for cooking 'at home'. We even did laundry and used a clothes line for a dryer. I had great fun with it. Above all expectations! We arrived after dark and got lost. A call to Dorothy and she came to escort us home. It was late, we hadn't eaten or thought to shop for that first nigh (my bad). So she fed us homemade chicken soup in her kitchen. Nothing fancy, but oh so appreciated!! at another point we were chatting before heading out for the day, when they noticed our rental car had a very low tire. Not flat yet, but .... Out came the air compressor and we were on our way! Someday, when I have a casita to share, I will aim to reach their standard of care.
Great Cabina, well equipped, great size for two people, very private and in a citrus orchard! Property was an easy twenty minute walk into Orosi which had all conveniences we needed. Also corner store a five minute walk away was convenient. Bus service was close by and quite frequent. Dorothy and Bob were great hosts with lots of information and the occasional ride too. We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay.
Orosi Valley is - as is much of Costa Rica- known for it's coffee harvests, but I struck gold when I found Bob and Dorothy and their wonderful river cabina. I was traveling solo and had never been to Costa Rica, yet with their warm welcome, hospitality, and guidance, I felt immediately at home. The private, spacious, and comfy cabina is nestled in a wonderous orchard of small tangerine, guava and other fruit trees. It has all the accommodations you will need: a well-supplied kitchen, walk-in shower, delicously comfortable bed, and to my delight, reliable WiFi! At the end of my full and adventurous day, I loved coming home to my safe and quiet sanctuary.
I arrived in SJ the late afternoon Christmas week which was a hectic time. Bob and Dorothy were their patiently waiting. I marveled at Dorothy's deft handling of the traffic hazards. They made sure I had everything I needed for my first day, stopping at a local market.
The property is within walking distance to the small town of Orosi where you can buy groceries and the little things you may need, and of course, find good authentic Costa Rican restaurants with friendly service. The town has an historic Franciscan church with a small souvenir shop and museum that is worth a visit, and right around the corner from the cabina is "Aventuras Orosi" an exceptional safety-conscious outfit that will offer you the thrill of riding the river that runs right past your cabina! (If you dare, as I did, you can also choose the "Canopy" adventure which is a series of ziplines way up high in the canopy of the wondrous green leafy trees that cover the steep hillsides)
When Dorothy and Bob invited me to join them for a Christmas party with their friends, it couldn't of been a lovelier gift as I met co-adventurers to discover the local area, beyond Orosi including Cachi, Paraiso, and San Jose. If you are without a vehicle, we discovered the busses are a fantastic way (though slow) to see things especially if you're traveling frugally. Once you get to a place, the taxis are super to use to hop around a town. The cabina is within walking access to the busses.
If you are wanting a quiet retreat from which you can navigate a wonderful adventure around the Orosi Valley (and Cartago Province), I couldn't recommend Dorothy & Bob's river cabina more highly. I feel blessed to having gotten to befriend them and to enjoy - at least for a short time - a slice of Costa Rica's Pura Vida!
This was our first visit to Costa Rica – my husband and I were looking for a clean, comfortable, reasonably priced place to stay. WE FOUND IT!!! Dorothy and Bob are wonderful hosts, they are the sweetest people and very knowledgeable about the area. Dorothy loaned us her travel magazine about the area with all kinds of things to do and see.
Everything about the cabana was great especially the wonderfully comfortable bed. Going to sleep each night with the sound of the river is very relaxing. The kitchen is very well equipped, we had everything we needed . One of our favorite things to do was start each day with breakfast on the back porch. It's a beautiful spot.
Then off for the day to explore. My husband likes to take short cuts so I really do mean explore. You never know what's around the next bend in the road.
We truly enjoyed having a secure and private sanctuary to come back to each night.
Thank you Dorothy and Bob we had a great time!!
The Orosi Valley is a landscape of topical hues. The rainforest of Tapanti and the Alto Cedral Cloud Forest paint a background of various shades of green, teeming with wildlife. Every turn of the road provides a new diversity of colors and terrain. Located south of Cartago, the Orosi Valley is a true jewel. Famous for its beautiful views, colonial churches, coffee farms, white water rivers, hot springs and Lake Cachí, the Orosi Valley and surrounding towns are like a birthday present, waiting to be opened. The small quaint villages offer a unique location where you can relax and enjoy a real slice of Costa Rican life. During coffee picking season, September through January, the valley comes to life. The pickers can be heard singing and talking in the fields as they pick the worlds best coffee.
It is easy to book activities such as: guided local tours, mountain biking, horse back riding, hiking, water rafting, zip lining, and other interesting activities to keep active during the day.
