There are long covered decks wrapping around most of the home with plenty of outdoor seating that offer breathtaking views of the foothills of the Sierras. Water features and gardens complement the natural rock formations. Enjoy our new spa in the back yard! This 2625 sq. ft. vacation home sits on a 5.6 acre property with plenty of privacy. It has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, plus a den with a queen size sleeper couch that can act as a 4th private bedroom, and sleeps 11 people comfortably. Relax and listen to the birds and the gentle sounds of two water features as you enjoy the grand panoramic mountain views and sunsets from the decks. The rear deck is equipped with a BBQ grill and 2 dining tables. Deer can often be seen as well as squirrels, quail and many different birds species. This property has a vast variety of bushes and trees, including the beautiful manzanitas. Native to the Sierra foothills, they are known for their reddish trunks and attractive twisting shapes. They flower in February, to the delight of the hummingbirds.

Deer Ridge Vacation Home is located 3.8 miles southeast of the town of Mariposa. The west entrance of Yosemite Park is only 36 miles away via Hwy 140, a scenic route along the Merced River. In Mariposa, a historic gold mining town, you can find out more about its gold mining past as you visit the Mariposa Museum and History Center. Inside the museum is a full sized replica of a mining town with authentic artifacts. Or visit the Mariposa Mining and Mineral Museum where you can explore the variety of California’s mineral wealth, and view breathtaking gems, minerals and precious metals from around the world. The Mariposa County Park offers a swimming pool and tennis courts for some outdoor family fun.

Amenities include central forced air heating and air conditioning. The spacious Great Room has a cathedral ceiling with many windows to enjoy the view. The wood burning fireplace with glass doors, backed by an attractive stone hearth, provides a cozy ambiance. Sit back and relax as you visit with your family or friends, or watch TV or a DVD from our collection on the 42 inch flat screen TV.

The kids can play games, or watch TV or movies on a second 42 inch flat screen TV in the den. The couch folds out to provide a queen size bed when needed.

Next to the kitchen is the laundry room with large capacity washer and dryer. Laundry detergent is included.

The downstairs master suite has its own sliding glass door leading to the deck. It features a walk-in closet and a recliner for some solitude and relaxation. The adjoining master bathroom has a jetted tub, offering great views of the surrounding landscaping. The large tiled shower has an oversize shower head. The den has a queen size sleeper couch. More things to see and do in the area:

The west entrance of Yosemite Park is only 36 miles from the vacation home. This west entrance to Yosemite Park is the closest (only 6 miles) to the loop road of Yosemite Valley, the park's main attraction. The Yosemite Valley is much further from all other park entrances.) You’ll enjoy the scenic drive along Hwy 140 bordered by the Merced River. After 18 miles you’ll see the Merced River Recreation Area at Briceburg. It has sandy beaches where you can have a family picnic, or stop to dip into the river on the way back from the park to cool off on a hot summer day. This area is also great for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. For the more adventurous among you, rent a kayak or take a white water rafting trip with one of the commercial rafting companies that provide trips down portions of the river.

Guests can also take Hwy 49 to Hwy 41 to drive through Yosemite's south entrance - a 41 mile drive from the vacation home. Traveling in that direction you can visit Bass Lake for swimming, boat rentals, beaches and restaurants. Also along Hwy 41, the historic Sugar Pine Railroad takes guests on a 4-mile narrated historical railway adventure through a scenic fir and pine forest pulled by a steam locomotive traversing original logging railbeds restored from the turn of the century. They also offer gold panning for the entire family. (Operates March - Oct.)

Another attraction is Sierra Vista Scenic Byway which you don’t want to miss. You’ll see giant sequoia groves, alpine lakes and meadows, rock formations, wildflower fields and some of the most beautiful views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

Mariposa has many restaurants, such as Charles Street, Castillo’s Mexican, Savoury’s, Sugar Pine Café, River Rock Inn, and High Country Health Food. You can find everything from gourmet dining, to Thai or Mexican food to the youthful vibe of Happy Burger Diner. Pioneer Market is the local grocery store. You'll also enjoy the local antique shops, gift shops and art galleries, some of which promote local artists. You might want to buy the local newspaper which comes out every Thursday for local events and attractions.

SPRING is the best time to see waterfalls at their peak in Yosemite Park. The snow remaining in the highest elevations melts and flows into streams that feed the waterfalls. Other than an occasional rain, you'll find very pleasant weather and smaller crowds for hiking. Some higher elevation hikes may be closed until late spring. This is a great time to raft the Wild and Scenic Merced River, or take amazing wildflower hikes in the Merced River Canyon or Hite's Cove, outside the park (March-May). Family fun at the Butterfly Festival in Mariposa (first weekend in May) or try to win the $10,000 prize at the Annual Fishing Derby at Bass Lake (first weekend in May).

SUMMER offers months of dry, warm, sunny weather. All hiking trails are open throughout the park. The high elevation roads to Glacier Point and Tioga Pass are open. This is a good time for horseback riding, morning hiking, bicycling, and even Merced River swimming in Yosemite and Briceberg Canyon. Bass Lake is another great place for swimming, boating and hiking. (Boat rentals available). The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a fun family experience. Ride in open railroad cars, pulled along historic tracks through a beautiful forest, by a steam locomotive. Enjoy musical events on weekend evenings in the Art Park in Mariposa.

AUTUMN is a wonderful time to hike in Yosemite! The gorgeous fall colors last for months. Cooler but comfortable weather and smaller crowds make this time of year special and invigorating! Some waterfalls have diminished flows, but Vernal and Nevada Falls are still spectacular! Plenty of sunshine despite an occasional rain. Enjoy the beautiful greening foothills at one of the local ziplines. Family fun at the 4-day County Fair at the Mariposa Co. Fair Grounds over Labor Day weekend. Amazing natural wonders at the CA State Mining and Mineral Museum.

WINTER When snow begins to fall in Yosemite ice-skating, downhill skiing, and snowshoeing (especially in the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias) are special treats. (Rentals available.) The mountains glisten in the sun. Hiking paths in Yosemite Valley are plowed and often free of snow. Make a snowman or go sledding. Horse-drawn sleigh rides or hayrides available at Christmas just outside the park. You’ll enjoy the brisk but varying weather if you dress in layers. Days are often clear, even in winter. In Mariposa, at 2,000 ft. elevation, snow is infrequent and melts, but if you want snow you can always find it at some elevation in Yosemite Park. Bring tire chains or 4WD, but chains aren't often needed unless driving higher than Yosemite Valley.

If you are looking for an adventurous vacation in a beautiful natural area, with gorgeous mountain views and easy access to Yosemite Park, you are sure to enjoy your stay at Deer Ridge Vacation Home!

About Magdalena and Bruce Beall (Yellowstone/Yosemite Vacation Rental Homes, LLC

We bought Deer Ridge Vacation Home because the area around Mariposa is so beautiful, offering stunning views of the foothills of the Sierras and so close to Yosemite Park.

Magdalena and Bruce Beall (Yellowstone/Yosemite Vacation Rental Homes, LLC purchased this house in 2013

Why Magdalena and Bruce Beall (Yellowstone/Yosemite Vacation Rental Homes, LLC chose Yosemite Area

This property stood out from other homes because it has been very well maintained and because the 5.6 acre property is wonderfully landscaped with rock formations alternating with gardens. We feel very fortunate to have been able to purchase it and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

You will love the peace and quiet as you listen to the birds singing and the wind rustling the leaves of the trees. You will feel yourself relax as you take in the beauty of the panoramic views. You'll come away feeling renewed!

Perfect family house

  • 5 of 5

This house was great and really had everything we could have possibly needed. The hosts were so very generous and really stock the house with everything. It was the perfect place for our Thanksgiving gathering for our family of 8. The views and seclusion were also very nice. We loved our stay and would highly recommend this house. Hopefully we'll be back again!

NO PRIVACY, but beautiful home

  • 3 of 5

This property is beautiful, clean, and has a great view but the reason for 3 stars is due to privacy. I received an email with instructions to the property (details, info, etc) after I had paid and signed the rental agreement, so this was when I learned that the owners lived on the same property. According to those details, their house is 'over the hill' and it states that this property is still very private. When we showed up, we learned that their house is ON THE SAME LOT, within the same gate, and a 2 minute walk from this house. Bruce, the owner, was cleaning out the jacuzzi when we got there (our fault, we got there 30 mins early) so he went ahead and gave us instructions on how to use the jacuzzi. He also told us to make sure we lock the front door when we leave and to make sure everything is locked. So we explored the home and went into town for a few hours. About 10 minutes after we got back, we heard the phone ring (we felt like we were being watched since he clearly saw us pull up) and it was Bruce. He explained to me that he had to come back to the home because one of their other properties needed some tool that our property had. He went on to say that he noticed one of the sliding doors wasn't locked, so he went around checking all of the other sliding doors and there were a total of '5' doors that weren't locked. He also said he hoped this would be the last time he'd have to talk to us. When he had told us to make sure we locked the front door and to make sure everything was locked, we did not anticipate he would come around pulling on every door and checking up on us (and by us I mean it was only my husband and I). We also didn't think twice about locking every single door since we genuinely thought we'd be fine as long as we locked the front door. Either way, I have stayed in many rental homes and have never felt so intruded and uncomfortable. Every time we left the home, I wondered if he would come around and check on us. Also keep in mind he has notes written around the entire home (some helpful ones, such as what lights do what, and others I found pointless and odd such as 'you'll pay for this if this happens'). If you're looking to relax, get away, and be private with a spouse (or friends) this is not the place for you.

Owner's Response: Arlyne, Thank you for accurately describing the beauty of our vacation home and surroundings. I was very surprised to read your negative comments about privacy because we've never had a comment like that. I think that your sense of a lack of privacy was unfortunately in your own perception and not an actual fact. I thought we had a pleasant conversation about the hot tub operation when you arrived a half hour early. By the way , the hot tub was crystal clear, fully clean and chemically balanced at that time. I was waiting to give the water one last test. I don't remember asking you to lock any doors. I assume that people will treat our home as if it were their own, and lock all the doors when they depart. (I do have one note near the thermostat asking people to lock all doors each time they depart.) Certainly you must realize that locking 2 out of 5 exterior doors does not make a home secure. Since I did have the very unusual need to come over and retrieve a shower head from a maintenance cabinet to meet the immediate need of another vacation rental we manage (and stores were closed at that hour) I noticed that the laundry door was unlocked. Then I could see another nearby door that was unlocked, so I decided to go around and check them all. My phone call was not a chastisement, but a reminder. Many people have only one or two doors to lock at their own homes. This home has 5 exterior doors. Some people aren't used to that. It was no big deal, since this is a quiet and safe rural area, but we do want our doors locked when no one is there. It keeps renter's belongings safe, as well as the house. It's just a good policy. To be clear, this vacation rental is at the top of a hill on a 5.6 acre property. It is at one edge of the property and our own home is at the other opposite end. There is a small hill between the 2 homes. We have no view of the rental's back deck or hot tub. We can see the side and parking area, but only if we step out on our front deck. We have no windows toward the rental. We have our own driveway, our own gate, and a separate address. I don't go over to check on anything except to maintain the clarity of the hot tub mid-way during long bookings, after getting permission to come over, usually while renters are gone. (Not needed during your booking.) People have plenty of privacy and most are happy we're close enough to be responsive to any needs that could arise.

Tranquil Beauty

  • 5 of 5

We had a girls weekend in Yosemite and LOVED the home, setting and location to town. The house is super spacious, the hot tub is totally the ticket after a long drive or a long hike in the Park. Magdalena and Bruce are great and easy to work with! We all wished we had just one more day to enjoy the scenery. It was tranquil and beautiful!

The house was very clean, with everything you need for your stay and extras.

  • 4 of 5

Booking was simple and clear, we got all the instructions needed for our late evening arrival. The accommodations for my family of 9 was splendid, everybody got good rest for our next day trip to Yosemite Park. There are plenty of books and guides for the park which were very helpful of our day trip. When we came back from the park, relaxing in the Jacuzzi outside was nice and the kids had a great time with the some of the board games from the house. Too bad we did not have more time to enjoy this beautiful place. Definitely recommended for families with kids. Thank you !

Deer Ridge Vacation Home is 36 miles from the entrance to Yosemite Park and only 42 miles from the loop road leading to the amazing Yosemite Valley with all of its beautiful mountains, vistas and waterfalls. Scenic Route 140 from Mariposa, running along the Merced River, is the most direct and shortest route to the Yosemite Valley, when compared to the routes from the other major gateway towns such as Oakhurst and Groveland.

The Merced River also provides opportunities for whitewater and scenic rafting, kayaking, swimming, hiking and picnics. Mariposa is a charming and scenic small town nestled in the foothills of the Sierras. Downtown there are plenty of good restaurants, art galleries, clothing and souvenir shops and banks/ATMs.

The Pioneer Market in Mariposa is a large well-supplied grocery store offering a vast array of wine and food choices, including organic vegetables.

Must-see places in Mariposa include the California State Mining and Mineral Museum, the Mariposa Museum and History Center and the historic Courthouse, built in 1854 and still in use today. Summer tours of the Courthouse begin Memorial day weekend. A large public swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball court and skateboard park are open to the public in the Mariposa County Park, 4 miles from the home. The quiet country roads in the vicinity of the vacation home are perfect for walking and mountain biking. Bicycle rentals are available in the area.
