This charming garage apartment, fully renovated but with remaining vintage charm, is convenient, comfortable, quiet and private.
Detached unit at the rear of property has second-story deck surrounded by trees, affording outside living space with privacy. The balcony overlooks a small ravine with a creek, no other properties back up to it, so it's quite secluded and private - perfect for having a nice coffee or tea, or a great spot to do yoga!
Open floor plan, vaulted ceilings, plenty of natural light, and a renovation that added all modern conveniences, while keeping many of the historic materials and trim for the original 1920's unit. We've also furnished it with family pieces, and some fine art in a style we'll call 'Mid-Century Mash-Up!'. Fun, funky, clean with solid lines, and all the creature comforts.
We walk downtown and to festivals while others are still looking for parking. Rent a couple of bikes and you have the majority of Austin at your convenience. And, SoCo is a veritable weekend in itself - shops, boutiques, restaurants, food trailers, bars, clubs and so much more, just blocks away. But, once you've had enough of folks, retreat to the calm of the Bolthole.
Perfect for a couple, but it does have a fold-out couch, so if needed, 4 'close friends' could make it work. Hardwood floors, high ceilings, skylit bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and street parking.
Minutes walk from the Lake, Downtown, easy access to festivals, and all that Austin has to offer!

we're really fortunate to live in this neighborhood and want to share the best that Austin has to offer, while allowing folks time to just chill out and enjoy a retreat-like 'treehouse' setting.
we live in the front house, so you have your choice - we can be as available as you need, or leave you alone. we can provide advice, do daily upkeep, or stock the fridge and pantry for you - with local favorites! - whatever you need.
as urban gardeners, we usually have edibles and greens, and more than we can consume, so if that's your diet, we're more than happy to provide greens!

We're told that this property was one of the 'hideouts' for Bonnie and Clyde... indeed, when we renovated the apartment, we found remnants of a hidden stairway in the garage, and a trapdoor in the apartment. It's still visible in the remodel.
That's why we call her 'the Bolthole' - the perfect safe house for an escape!
We're casual, but we understand great service and have stayed in some exceptional Vacation Rentals ourselves. We like meeting people, or respecting privacy - and we love to share our love for Austin with you!

The Bolthouse Apartment really exceeded our expectations and was exactly as described in the listing. Very clean, comfy bed, lots of amenities provided ... everything you need ... PLUS cold beer and red wine to boot!! This place was great for our short stay and would be perfect for those staying in Austin longer. It's tucked away in a quiet residential area, close to SoCo, but not far from downtown. Very quiet and the back deck was lovely to enjoy morning coffee, like being in a treehouse. We are active and in our early 40's and were able to walk everywhere, though the hilly streets gave us a good workout. We felt safe walking, but driving in the area was not challenging and we'd probably use our vehicle more next time. Communication from the owner was great before and during our stay. We really loved Austin and would book here again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a great stay!
My family of 4 traveled to Austin for the ACL Festival. We absolutely loved the apartment and its location. The apartment is located in Travis Heights neighborhood which is quiet and yet close to all attractions (South Congress, Downtown, University of Texas, Zilker Park ect.) and just a few minutes away from the airport. We didn't rent a car and were able to walk everywhere (recommended to all healthy people that like to walk a lot and don't mind the heat). We also used public transportation on a couple occasions and did not have any problems - the system is really well developed.
The apartment was clean, well equipped, and tastefully decorated (loved the art on the walls). The place has a large deck that overlooks a small ravine that is surrounded by mature trees - a perfect place to relax after a long day of walking.
Chris (the owner) left us a few essentials in the refrigerator that we enjoyed upon our arrival. This was a nice touch and we really appreciated this. We noted a few items in the house that indicated that the owners are an environmentally conscious people - it is a big plus for us.
In general, Chris was prompt to respond to all our inquiries prior to our arrival. Chris and his wife live next door but they respect their visitors privacy and do not intrude. They are very quiet and we only saw them a couple of times. We enjoyed talking with them.
I recommend this place and will stay there again if we happen to travel to Austin again.

This adorable garage apartment is tucked in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood. The place was stocked with everything you could possibly need. The deck is shaded and relaxing. The location is close to many shops, restaurants, everything you can wish for. We enjoyed our stay here very much!
My husband & I were in Austin for a 4-day class to which only he enrolled, leaving me to enjoy some much needed “me” time during his long day-times away. I had “plans” to be physically active those 4 days, exploring all the INCREDIBLY close-by (within walking distance) areas, whether it was nature or downtown shops/eatery exploration, depending on which direction you took - LOVED THAT! ...It rained each of those 4 days, mostly forcing me to stay in…. No matter, this place provided ALL of my needs and then some. Serene indoor space with a nearly entire wall of sliding doors through which I enjoyed looking onto a large deck over which hovered the most majestic of trees (my favorite beings on the planet!) which were rooted next to a sweet creek. Glorious. Allowed my Self to receive these gifts. I was grateful it rained :)
When planning our trip, we opted to extend the stay to 7 days knowing Austin would afford us all Its Austin wonderfulness! SO GLAD WE DID! Economically, this place is PERFECT as it has ALL the necessities to prepare meals "at home", full fridge/freezer, ample pantry space, cookware, cups/dishes/flatware/etc., COFFEE (thank you! apologies for cleaning you out! Good stuff ;) ), the welcomed gifts of a local 6-pk of beer chilling in that fridge (for me) & a very nice bottle of wine (for Louie) (thank you, thank YOU!), 4-burner gas range & oven... need I say more?! We were well equipped & taken care of to make this vacation one of the best.
Chris was warm, fun, kind, generous - truly, the perfect host, embracing us so fluidly as if family. Their beloved puppy, whose name escapes me (ugh!), was a delightful counterpart to her family & welcomed us in her way.
All-in-all, Bolthole was & is a fantastic place. A home away from home, definitely. We hope very much to return soon.

I enjoyed my stay at Chris's studio - the space is airy and peaceful, there's parking on the street, and chris made sure I had plenty of coffee for the mornings. :-)
We were visiting Austin for a friend's wedding and decided to stay at the Bolthole. Everything about our stay was great!
The place is very comfortable and it was very clean upon arrival. Although we did not cook, the kitchen was very well stocked and would be perfect for those who prefer to eat in. The beer and coffee were incredibly appreciated and made the place feel much more like home.
Travis Heights is the neighborhood and it has so much character and charm. We loved looking at all the houses and buildings. There are tons of great restaurants (and food trucks) that are very close too. We walked to S. Congress and rented bikes at the B Bike stand (very easy bike rental using your credit card... tons of places in Austin with these). You can easily get to the trails that run along the river too... it took us about 15 minutes to bike to Barton Springs pool which is another great place to check out.
Chris and Susannah were very genuine and great hosts too. Can't wait for our next trip to Austin!

Free entertainment just walking down South Congress, and easy access to all downtown activities. We get there walking before friends find parking!
Beautiful green-belt and year-round pool easy walking distance - all of the action, and a peaceful retreat as well...
This rental is perfect for a couple looking to be able to do whatever they want on the urban scene, and then just drop out of the picture and be alone. Or, a single person relocating, visiting or working in town for a short-term.
We are so close and yet still 'far out'; tucked away and retreat-like. Fun, funky, clean, bright, and cozy.
We've used some family pieces and some fine art collectibles to create a nice 'Mid-Century Mash-up' so you can enjoy a little bit of what keeps Austin cutting edge, yet comfy and ole school as well.
It's your choice - we can be as involved as you like and give recommendations and ideas, or we can leave you completely alone for a retreat. It's our pleasure to share the vibrancy or help maintain the solace!
