We are Johnny and Susan Kirkland, we live in New York, on Long Island's North Shore, most of the year, but all of our 4 children have moved out west and made it their home. So, we thought we should follow suit, we just aren't quite ready to leave New York full time yet. We bought our house and stay there several times per year, so you can be sure that all of the creature comforts are available to you. Susan is a retired Special Education Teacher, who still substitute teaches on a regular basis and Johnny is a Physicist and software developer. Since our children have gone, we've picked up a new hobby of raising guide dogs. We have successfully raised Josh, who is a working guide dog, and we have raised London, who is now a Vet Service Dog for a disabled Vietnam veteran, and we have Gretha, a breeder dog for the GDF, as well as Dave and Sushi. All three are black labs who lives with us all of the time. This is where our home's name comes from, The Black Dog Hideaway is a tribute to our love for our guide dogs and the important work they do.
During your visit you may see our son John who takes care of the Black Dog Hideaway and lives in the private basement apartment with a separate entrance, or when you are making a reservation you'll talk to Sue who manages the home and bookings.
Please feel free to contact us anytime, we'd love to hear from you!
Susan Kirkland purchased this house in 2012
We fell in love with this house the moment we stepped inside, and we know that you will too! There are two adorable porch swings on the front porch, and the subtle character is amazing. Downstairs, you'll notice the original woodwork, and original built in cabinets from days gone by. Upstairs was updated with comfort in mind. This house has the best of both worlds, old world history and modern updates and comforts. Plus, you can't beat the location, and proximity to downtown Bozeman!
Please enjoy the jetted tub in the master bath. Also for your comfort we have installed baseboard heaters under each sink to warm you from the bottom up.
In the master bedroom you will find a built -in wall heater for you additional comfort. For your comfort on those very hot summer days we have installed a Mr. Slim air conditioner in the master bedroom.
The stereo is located in the master bedroom cherry wood closet, and can be heard throughout the second level on built -in speakers.
In the living room, we have installed a 55 inch 3DTV with 3D glasses for 6. Original hardwood floors have been enhanced with walnut ribbon knots and refinished to their natural beauty. With the push of a button, you can enjoy our gas fireplace and enjoy a cozy relaxing atmosphere with family and friends.
The kitchen has granite counter tops, double oven, pot filler over 5 burner gas stove, ice maker on the refrigerator door, double sink, and trash compactor.
The walk to town is easy, and close, as is Cooper Park at only two blocks away. We have a covered backyard deck with outdoor table and chairs that seat 6 for added summer entertaining. A Weber grill is also on the paver patio. Our back yard is professionally landscaped with quaint limestone walk ways, gardens, and a paver patio in keeping with our 1912 Craftsman style home. Fully fenced in yard.
We stayed at the Black Dog Hideaway for 5 nights in early May 2016. We were attending my son's graduation from Montana State University and had 6 people stay there. The home was beautifully kept and the rooms were well appointed. Kitchen was nicely laid out and all the tools you needed were available. It was very much appreciated that many spices, coffee, paper towels, etc. were provided. All modern appliances. Bed rooms were quaint and comfortable. Master BR & bath were worth it alone - very spacious and interesting layout. Our only suggestion, and this is potentially a nit-pick, is that it would have been nice to have had a TV in the master BR. Pull out bed in the LR was surprisingly comfortable.
Had a nice back yard with deck and patio. The grill worked great. We would stay here again in a heartbeat and highly recommend it. When you figure a decent hotel was going for $150+ per night, this house was a bargain. We saved the difference in dining out costs alone as we ate breakfast and dinner at the house several times. While the landlord's son lives in a basement apartment, he was very quiet and we really didn't notice him at all.
Our family of 4 had a wonderful Bozeman location and couldn't have chosen a better location. The home had all the amenities we needed and we could tell the owners take great pride in showing off the home and the town to their guests.
The location is in a very desirable and historic area of town that is particularly charming and inviting. The location is the perfect distance away from Main St. so the noise from the restaurants, bars, shops and traffic was not an issue but we could still enjoy all those with a quick 2 block walk.
The town and surrounding area is amazing. It's was our first visit to Bozeman and while much of the vacation was spent skiing we also enjoyed the shops, restaurants and Children's Museum in town. Bridger Bowl is a hidden gem of a ski resort. We live in Colorado and ski nearly every weekend and even with that context we have a bit of 'mountain envy' as we loved Bridger Bowl. Big Sky is also fantastic.
The home was perfect for our family. The master suite upstairs has some wonderful sitting areas, spacious closet and large bathroom. One of our 'gripes' about some of the homes we have VRBO'd in the past is a kitchen that has the bare minimum in terms of utensils, pots, pans, etc. and the ability to actually use it is compromised. This was NOT the case at Black Dog Hideaway. This kitchen is clearly a 'cook's kitchen' that someone who cooks regularly has stocked with every item you would ever need in a kitchen. This is a big convenience and a great amenity.
Susan, was fantastic to work with during the booking process. She shared a lot of her Bozeman knowledge with us and enthusiastically answered any questions we had about the town or activities. She clearly takes tremendous pride in this home as well as Bozeman. We hope to visit again in future years!

We loved our time at the Black Dog Hideaway! The place is clean and cozy and beautifully decorated and furnished. The kitchen has an amazing amount of cookware. We talked to Susan a few times on the phone and she was very helpful and we met John (her son who lives in the basement) and he is very nice and has an adorable Corgi, Pepper. We walked downtown one night for dinner , which was a fun trudge through the snow. We also cooked a big meal in for a graduation celebration and found plenty of dishes and pans and everything you would need. I want Susan to come decorate my home----she is a pro! The house is over 100 years old, but well preserved and renovated for comfort. This was our first time with vrbo and we appreciate what that has to offer.
A beautiful home with one of the best locations in town! Fantastic, we loved it! Being able to walk downtown was great!
Wonderful stay. House is very convenient to downtown, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.; and the interior was done in very good taste. Convenient to outdoor activities like hiking, fly fishing, sight seeing, etc.
My husband and I stayed in Bozeman for our first time at the Black Dog Hideaway. The house worked out perfectly for us. Although it was a few blocks more than we thought to the main downtown area, it was not bad at all. We were gone most of the day adventuring, fishing, etc., but it was nice to come home and enjoy the large master shower and fireplace. We did not know until a day in that the son lived in the downstairs apartment. This would have been nice to know before we arrived. Overall, it was a nice place.
