About Bobby Workman

My wife and I decided to start a new life in Costa Rica for a slower paced lifestyle and to also start a family. So, we drove with our three Basset Hounds from North Carolina down through Central America to arrive at our new home in Costa Rica in 2005. After living in the country for 6 years while raising our three daughters, we decided to move to the tourist town of Manuel Antonio and build four villas on the beach with the help of our family and friends. The Espadilla Ocean Club is a special place and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Bobby Workman purchased this villa in 2013

Why Bobby Workman chose Puntarenas

Manuel Antonio is very unique because of the geography. The town is on a mountainside that overlooks the ocean and at the end of the road is the beautiful bay, beaches and national park. There is one way in and one way out which makes it feel like the special place that it is. Our villa is extremely unique in its design and in its proximity to this very well protected beach.

What makes this villa unique

Our villa is special with its waterfall showers, attention to detail, view of the ocean, proximity to the beach and amenities(no car needed), modern design and its natural setting.

Really nice, but not what we were expecting.

  • 3 of 5

Not all nice properties are meant for all families. This is the case for the EOC and our family of 4, (including 2 teens). We were in Villa 4. The condo and surrounding property is immaculately clean, beautifully landscaped with a very helpful and efficient staff to help with whatever problems might arise during your visit, (for example, our stove wasn't working on our first night and within minutes, we had a propane BBQ and portable electric stove!). The stove was fixed the next day.

The following are reasons why we probably wouldn't re-book this property, (but might not be deal-breakers for other families). 1) Claustrophobic layout. The biggest window on the first floor (looking toward the beach), as well as a window in the 2nd bedroom is frosted, so you can't see out of it. I'm sure this is to maximize privacy for the other villas, but it left us feeling too enclosed and claustrophobic. We knew the beach was out there, but you can't see it or hear it from the condo or the main outside patio. You get a lovely peek-a-boo view from the master bedroom and it's adjoining small patio, (we all watched a spectacular lightening storm on the master bed one night...cozy, but a little uncomfortable for all 4 of us). 2) Awkward layout/Lots of multi-level stairs/Not many comfortable places to sit. The kitchen has 2 plastic chairs, a rocker that is on a platform up a couple of stairs and a long padded bench. Outside patio has 2 chairs and a hammock in one area and a larger seating area with a bench and love-seat. This is where we ate and played games, but unfortunately we didn't last too long in the evenings because of the mosquitoes. The EOC was our 2nd location while in CR. At our 1st location we cooked together, (EOC kitchen only big enough for 1), we ate together and played games at a kitchen table (no table here), we streamed and watched movies together, (No TV screen to watch together here but you can use WiFi with your tablet or smart phone). The kids tried streaming on our own Netflix account on their phones, but WiFi buffered at times. It got dark early at 6pm, so the evenings were very different. Ultimately what happened is everyone went to their beds to stretch out or ended up in different parts of the condo. Again, just a personal preference, I'm a mom on vacay with my hubby and 2 teens and like that together-time. We agree with all the wonderful things that people say about this property, except it just wasn't comfortable.

Our honeymoon at EOC

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Espadilla Ocean Club for 6 nights at the end of April/beginning of May 2017. We were welcomed as soon as we arrived and Fer helped us to become familiar with the area and let us know him and Brooke were there to help us throughout our stay. The staff at EOC was wonderful and very kind, from our concierges to the security/customer service to the grounds maintenance, they were all kind and friendly. The villa was beautiful and comfortable and our view out the back was wonderful. Some days there were monkeys or horses in the back and we had ocean views to wake up to. The area is very natural and the beach is within steps which is not common in this area. We were very pleased with everything and were amazed at how friendly and helpful everyone was!! We'd definitely recommend staying at EOC to our friends!!

Practically Ocean Front (100 yards), Creative Design, Mangos Every Morning

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely stay. We could tell immense thought and effort were put into the plan and design of the location, architecture, and interior design of the villa. We had our own private small pool and hammock. And though villas were on either side of us, the use natural trees and vegetation obfuscated those views. We felt safe and relaxed. The public beach is an easy 10 minute walk down from our own, what seemed to be private beach. The water and views were beautiful. The waves and under toe can be massive, so just be careful. We came during mango season, so every morning when we walked out on our private deck, mangos had fallen and we had our choice to eat throughout the day. The staff are friendly, helpful, genuine, and knowledgeable. The national park is also an easy 20-ish minute walk. And the street walk to town and the public beach is about 10 minutes or less. People do walk up and down the beach asking if you'd like something to drink or to see if you'd like to buy something they've made. They have some lovely wares. And it's how these people make a living. So if you find something lovely, don't hesitate to buy it to take home as a memory of your time in Costa Rica. If you're not interested, just say so. They'll move on.

There are only a few things to watch out for: If you're renting a car, the driveway into the resort is extremely steep and takes a brave soul to back out or drive out. Just be careful and ask for assistance if you need to.

Manuel Antonio is a lovely, small town. Plenty of food and drink places from which to choose.

Don't know much about taxi's since we have a rental car.

They do have a few places in town that offer food delivery if you don't feel like going out.

Chairs are put out automatically for you on the beach, but are taken in at 4PM (free). I'm sure one could arrangement to have chairs kept out longer for a fee.

This is a small resort with 4 villas and a small, cool public gathering area. There is no restaurant on site. Food is easy enough to come by as mentioned above.

The weather was fantastic. We came during the rainy season. And when we come again, we always want to come in the rainy season. It rains at least once a day for 10 minutes or an hour....but the rest of the day is beautiful. Sometimes it was bad weather more than that, but mostly it's just a couple of showers during the day to cool things off. The weather was perfect! I heard how hot it gets in Costa Rica. Well, that's another thing about the ra

Relax, rewind, rejuvenate!

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved the condo at EOC. The staff was super helpful - Brooke and Fernando were always available to us whenever we had questions, whether it was a cab, or a recommendation for a great restaurant. All of our adventures/excursions were planned by Brooke which included our super adrenaline filled zip lining, horseback riding in the mountains and all our transfers to and from San Jose. My sisters and I chose EOC because of the separate bedrooms, the full kitchen and proximity to the beach and Manuel Antonio Park.

I highly recommend EOC to those wishing to totally unplug. Be warned there is no TV but we didn't miss it a bit!

Thanks for a great stay!

Best bang for your buck on CR's best beach!

  • 5 of 5

If you're beach bums like us, the EOC is perfect! The beach is long, soft, wide, and gorgeous. The condos are very well put together and make the most of the space available. Monkeys, iguanas, and horses roam the field leading to the beach and you'll find plenty of crabs on the beach, day and night. There's an abundance of restaurants nearby and Manuel Antonio is great hub for adventure. Make sure you go to Nauyaca Falls, my favorite adventure of our two week trip! See if they have the option available where they take you to the falls in the back of the truck. Fer and the rest of the staff go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of. Have them buy groceries fro you ahead of time. We stayed at 4 amazing places in CR, but if we could only choose one to go back to, this would be it!
