Hi, my name is Steve!
I live on the East Coast of the United States.
I have owned Golden Sun Villa in Discovery Bay, Jamaica for over 20 years.
When I am not vacationing there myself I rent it out so others can enjoy it.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have, and I will get back to you right away!
Steve purchased this villa in 1988
I would recommend if you're wanting very intimate privacy. Secluded, quiet, even though it's located on Queens Highway. Stars out at night and the groundskeeper is a treasure. The "front yard" is unbelieveable. Breathtaking view of the Bay. The yards dogs are always nearby but respectful. Which means they are being taking care of and feed on regular basis. Hugh plus for me. Recommend this spot if you're looking to have some peace and quiet ( wi-fi is awesome) or just want to get away. Its simple beach home on a rocky beach; no cable TV, no radio (bring a laptop, DVD's, Roku, Apple TV or some other entertainment device). Recommend bringing a camp lantern or flashlight once the sun goes down. The pool is very well maintained on a daily and offers a view of the bay. If you don't have a car rental and want to sample local attractions the car service is about 40-80 US dollars to any location. Be very specific to want you expect for dining options. Loved the place.
We can not say enough about the staff: Lorna, Chelsea, and Maurice. This is an older home with issues but the staff make you feel comfortable. There was no internet or TV the whole time and the pool was not working properly but we used it and showered afterwards. Lorna and Chelsea kept the home clean and their cooking was out of "our" world! Maurice was always working on the property and will do anything to please a guest. Let him tell you about his knowledge of the plants on the property. The dogs are a bonus! The three of them are friendly and roamed the property freely.
The view from each room is simply beautiful. The crashing of the waves was very peaceful. The chlorine level in the pool wasn't quite right and when it was "right", we couldn't detect the presence of chlorine, we didn't use it. Since the water access area was too rocky to swim, we were looking forward to using the pool. So we went to nearby Flavors Beach which was really nice. I agree with some of the other reviews, the home was in disrepair and rundown. The pictures on the site are outdated. Because of the pictures, I had high expectations. The property was not clean and well maintained. The bathrooms - especially master - could use some updating. We used shower shoes. The sinks showed signs of age with some mold and I took pictures and sent to the owner.
The staff are really nice but it was awkward interacting with the two ladies. We didn't engage with them much. It was very difficult to get info from the ladies and they didn't volunteer anything. We felt very uncomfortable and somewhat caged - at least 8 padlocks on the doors - each had a different key. We would have checked out early if our budget permitted and if there were other local vacancies. Glad we made plans for the 2nd 1/2 of our stay in Jamaica. We didnt ask for a refund. My brother stayed a night then I took him home.
Positives: Ocean view. Can't get any closer to the water. 3 BDRMS each with its own bath, office with day bed, huge living/dining room and a full size kitchen. Lots of natural light. Wifi even though it was a bit slow at times. Having a cook available was easier on our pockets and very convenient since the staff went shopping for us. We all enjoyed the meals: curry goat, curry chicken, stew chicken, fried chicken, salt fish, corn meal porridge for breakfast and whatever else we wanted. The fruit/veggie truck came by so we could have fresh local fruits/veggies. My 5 yo old LOVED the ladies. They Hand-washed our clothes. Yard was well maintained.
Cons: difficult to find villa. The destroyers/mosquito repellant should be available to all guests and not have to ask for it. We bought our own. Beds need nets. A roll of paper towel should be available as well as soap to wash hands in the kitchen and bathrooms. Only a bar soap in the master bath. I had to ask for mats in the bathrooms after I slipped and almost fell on wet tile floor. TV didn't work.
Ok if you like 2 or 3 star
Owner more responsive during booking
We loved staying here it was peaceful and serene. The staff was great. The only issue we had was the wifi went down the day we got there and was never fixed, being that our phones did not work internationally that was our only way to communicate back home, which we were never able to do. Overall the experience was very positive.
This was the best vacation of our lives. The property is breathtaking and peaceful. The staff spoiled us and probably was the best part of our stay. Excellent pool and deck. The house is whistle clean, but more home than hotel ( Could use some updating of the furniture). The bedrooms all face the ocean. The master bedroom has two huge doors that open the entire bedroom to the ocean. Truly magnificent. We will be back.
I've been fortunate and privileged to have rented private villas in many exotic locations, for which I'm grateful. But we've never before experienced the level of caring (yes, love!) and royalty treatment to this degree during both blissful stays at this hidden, tucked-away gem, Golden Sunset.
This private, most relaxing of Villas - on an expansive breathtaking oceanfront, with swimming pool, gazebo, massive roaming areas both on property & nearby - is NOT furnished like a stiff n' stodgy Ritz Carlton (if that's what you're looking for, this place is NOT for you!). While EXTREMELY comfortable, complete w EVERY amenity, it's COZY, not opulent! The warm decor is SO Island-quaint; the linen always fresh. The owner continuously enhances the getaway along that motif. It's beyond obvious that the ongoing embellishments are a labor of pride n' love.
My favorite times were midnight swims in the pool with my music speakers playing [Since the residence is COMPLETELY private, clothing is optional! ;) ], and evening swings on the outdoor veranda, facing the stunning ocean view, all in our backyard, all to ourselves.
What a pampering staff! Lorna is kind - BEYOND caring - (my understanding is that Lorna has been with the Villa for some 15-20 yrs, or thereabout) and runs an incredibly loving, dedicated team, who even PACKED MY BAGS FOR ME when we were late leaving back to the airport!! (When you stay here, you'll know why it's so hard to leave till the very last second. Both times, I wished I'd booked for at LEAST an extra week).
We didn't rent a car, because we didn't want the stress of driving on the "wrong" side. The staff secured us a wonderful driver, who was also more than happy to show us the sights "less seen," which I always wanted - the REAL Jamaica, if you will.
You are NOT a customer at Golden Sunset; you're a guest of honor. Each room has its own bathroom, and you've got the entire property to yourselves manned by a crew whose only job is to make you happy, whatever happy means to each vacationer. You get to feel like nobility for a spell.
THANK you, Golden Sunset. I canNOT wait to return to be enveloped in your unparalleled serenity. Your hammock and cocoanuts are calling to me right now as I get ready for work, which I'm fortunate to enjoy, but which also feels so mundane after re-experiencing my divine home away from home (I take a lot of liberties with the word "my," but one can pretend, can't they?)
You guys ROCK. Thank you SO MUCH. Irie, mahn.
