We are travelers ourselves and are constantly looking for affordable cottages wherever we are. We hope to share our affordable home with like-minded travelers leaving you with more money to spend on adventures in the area.
Margaret Degliantoni purchased this house in 1975
This was our family home from 1975 until 2006. We were teachers in the community and raised our children here before relocating to Lake Tahoe. We have info to share with you regarding the area.
The quiet seclusion of this wine country neighborhood has captured the hearts of our renters since 2009 with many of them returning each year to vacation and enjoy the wine country.
Great great location. House is so comfortable and had everything needed. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
I've stayed here many times, both as a personal writing retreat and romantic weekends with my husband. The property is in easy walking distance to lovely restaurants/bars/market. It's a perfect home base for wine tasting in the region (wineries a few minutes down the road; ~35 mins beautiful drive to Napa Valley wine train), seeing sights/hiking (Jack London park is a short drive up the road), or for staying in to soak in the hot tub and sip wine. There's a closet of games (like Mastermind and Triomino, if I'm remembering correctly). The property is quiet and private in a small neighborhood; the house is clean, the owners are friendly and accessible. It's a fabulous value, the only downside is making sure to book early enough in advance before all the dates are gone!
This cottage is in the perfect location . Glen Ellen is not commercial and the perfect small California town. The cottage is within walking distance to the grocery and restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were able to sit outside in the front and enjoy the quiet neighborhood . Inside was perfect for us. Our daughter was able to enjoy her bedroom and private bathroom on her side of the house and my husband and I had our own side of the house upstairs . The living room dining room and kitchen were spacious for all of us. We enjoyed visiting the wineries . It's also close enough to San Francisco that we spent the day there on the day we picked up our daughter from the airport . If we are ever back to Sonoma we will book this rental again .
My friend and I used the Glen Ellen Wine Cottage as a home base for activities in Sonoma and Napa Counties, including wine, wine, and more wine, visiting friends from Sonoma State University days, and spending a day at Point Reyes National Seashore. The location was perfect for that! The cottage is cozy, yes, but spacious. I stayed in the upstairs room and loved it. The bed was very comfortable, and I loved all the wood floors, walls, and cabinets. My friend was very comfortable in the downstairs bedroom, and we both appreciated having our own bathroom. Upon arrival, we used the 2-for-1 Benziger wine tasting card. Thank you for that as well as for the one for St. Anne's Crossing in Kenwood! Benziger is about a 20-minute walk away (uphill going), and although the countryside is beautiful, there is no sidewalk, so pay attention to the cars! Margaret was readily available via email before arrival and during our stay, and we had no problems finding or getting into the home. It's also nice that there's no cleaning fee! It takes just a few minutes to gather up the sheets, towels, and trash. The home was very clean upon our arrival. Most of our wine tasting was in Sonoma (superior) County: Wilson, Mazzocco, and Foppiano in Healdsburg; Korbel along the Russian River; St. Anne's Crossing and Kunde in nearby Kenwood; and Benziger up the street. We also went to the Napa County wineries of Grgich Hills (Rutherford) and Chateau Montelena (Calistoga)...both beautiful wineries with excellent wines and stories. It was also so nice to be able to walk just a few minutes to such excellent restaurants! We ate at Glen Ellen Grill and The Fig Cafe. Delicious! With only a 4-night stay and so much to do, I regretted not being able to just hang out at the cottage more. There isn't a view per se, but it's surrounded by the woods, so it's very beautiful. If I were to do it again - which I plan to - I will FLY to Santa Rosa from San Diego and forego that terrible drive through LA and East Bay traffic. Thank you, Margaret and Steve for opening up your lovely little home us!
I just returned from a great weekend at Margaret's house in Glen Ellen. This is the second time I have stayed at this property. It is a very comfortable and clean house with a hot tub if you care to use it (we did not ). During the booking process, Margaret was quick to respond when we had additional questions about the rental The location couldn't be better as it allows you to walk to tasting rooms with warm, welcoming servers and great restaurants in Glen Ellen. Be sure to go to Olive and Vine, the Glen Ellen Inn and The Fig: delicious food and excellent service at all three restaurants.
When I came across this place, I knew this had to be the place to stay! Right in the middle of where we would be traveling. Loved the peacefulness! Our son-in-law was so happy about being here. So much better than a hotel! The cost -EXCELLENT! We loved that we could have a meal together every day, it really was like just being at home togther while on vacation! Putting the fire on every night made it cozy! The local market is the best! We went for a morning walk and it was SOOOO beautiful and peaceful , even saw deer. We liked it so much, we really would love to come back! A fabulous place to stay!
We are a family of 4. Our two daughters are 22 and 17. We chose this location because it was central to San Francisco, Napa, and Bodega Bay. Our family values being connected to the world via wifi. This location found us outside in the driveway trying to get one bar of service to stay in touch with my business and the rest of the world. There are no flat screen tv's at all in this location, only the kind you would have owned 20/30 years ago. Getting a good selection of channels was difficult.
There is a very nice wood stove, but no air conditioning in this house. We discovered this the hard way one day when it was close to 100 in the area. There was only one fan available that we could find. The rest of our stay had tolerable weather but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. I never thought to ask if the house had AC. We thought of buying a fan if it continued to be hot. The stair rails and supporting vertical slats going up to the master bedroom were mostly loose. I wouldn't allow small children to stay here because of that. The towel bar in the upstairs bathroom was pulled off the wall on one side with a note beside it that said if we wanted he would come and fix it. Seems like this should have been done before we arrived. The hot tub needed an "O" ring replaced and was unusable. Cob webs around light fixtures, the dishwasher needs to be rolled to the sink and hooked up. There were notes and instructions everywhere on what to do and touch and what not to do or touch. Even the binders with instructions were scribbled here and there and the pages were crinkled and water stained.
This place was very affordable. We left two days before we had to. Our trip to Monterey Bay was unplanned and a welcome return to the 21st century. This place needs updating.
Great lodging location for family reunion or wedding in the area.. Obviously, a fabulous spot for wine tasting. Temperate weather and awesome jumping off point for touring San Francisco, Russian River area and, the rugged Sonoma coast. Be walking the beach in less than an hour. We are a great family home for the right price.
