Dreaming of an oceanfront vacation?
Fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing and sea birds calling. Stroll the beach looking for shells and sea treasures. Watch our resident otters play at water's edge. Spend endless hours watching eagles soar, seals fishing, the ferries coming and going, sea planes overhead and myriad shorebirds looking for dinner. Wander, read, stroll, storm watch, sleep in a deck chair, relax over dinner, BBQ a fresh salmon; this is British Columbia oceanfront at its best!
This modern well-equipped home has everything you will need for a relaxing, memorable vacation.
This custom built home is owned by our family. It was custom designed and built by one of Nanaimo's most well-respected builders. It sits on the site of one of the original Departure Bay summer cottages built circa 1900. The original wood-frame summer cottage was not salvageable, and so, in 2012, a custom designed house was built on the site. Lots of history. Brand new luxury home.
Su Grimmer purchased this house in 2012
The house site and the whole of the Departure Bay Beach area is one of the most historic in the region. Walk on waterfront is hard to find anywhere in the world, and Departure Bay Beach House is just that...the beach, and the ocean, just outside the ocean side doors of the house.
Waterfront. Oceanfront. Mountain views. Custom build. Modern fully equipped home. Lots of space for family, friends and entertaining. Listen to the crash of waves, stroll the beach, breathe the clean ocean air, de-stress, relax, rejuvenate, re-connect. That's what our family does. For us it is all about big family dinners, good fresh food, lots of laughter, idle hours of reading, listening, talking or just kicking back, sipping a cool drink, taking it all in. Hours slip by and time seems to stand still. Sleep well. Swim. Meditate. Connect. We always leave too soon. We think you will feel the same way.
I searched online for several weeks to find the perfect home and location for our family to all be together in celebration of our milestone 40th Wedding Anniversary. We are a family of 6, including our toddler granddaughter. We knew from the moment that we stepped foot into Su's beautiful and immaculate house with panoramic views of Departure Bay, that we had found our idyllic home away from home for the next 10 days. Relaxing soft music was greeting us from within the house and fresh breakfast Danish was on the kitchen counter from a local bakery to welcome us. Wow! I'm not a world class traveler, but can honestly say that this is the most lovely home we have ever rented for a vacation. There is so much personal space throughout and breathtaking views from both levels. The ferry terminal is within view, so there is always a ferry or a seaplane or a kayak to see. Neighboring otters are nearby near a clear water stream and can be seen early in the morning, as are deer and seagulls and an occasional hawk. We enjoyed every deck and had such glorious weather. Most meals were eaten outside on the spacious patio with Su's beautiful ornamental grasses and the water, only footsteps away, soothing our souls! Su's kitchen and cabinets are so well stocked!
Nanaimo has myriad things to do and a great assortment of shops, restaurants, farmers markets, excursions, etc. We also planned several fun day excursions away from home - a trip to Victoria, and wine touring in Cowichan Valley where we visited several small wine estates and experienced spectacular scenery along the way! Loved spending a lot of time at or near the house - walks on the beach, kayak rides, looking for shells, walks to the nearby kiddie park or splash park or take a short car ride to the top of Sugarloaf mountain nearby.
Su is the absolute most gracious and hospitable hostess than you can imagine. She goes the extra mile in helping with your vacation planning and has great tips and recommendations for restaurants, excursions, shopping places, etc. She even offered to come to the house one day and take some casual family photos of us outdoors. As guests, Su made us feel like we were part of her family and that her house was our home. She even supplied a high hair, a stroller and a portacrib for our granddaughter. Many treasured memories were made here and our 10 day vacation with family was a dream come true!
We had the most wonderful week at this home. Su was nothing short of phenomenally helpful in getting us settled in and even in helping us with a car rental problem we encountered on the drive up (moon roof stuck open - not ideal on Van Isle!)
We were a party of 7 that included a 3 yr old toddler, 11yr old, parents and grandparent. Everyone enjoyed their stay here and it really is a place suitable for all. It's hard to point out the best parts as everything is immaculate, well cared for and well organized. All bedrooms are extremely well furnished with their own unique characteristics. The kitchen and downstairs open plan is a wonderful central hive of activity and the upstairs (2nd lounge) is perfect with its elevated aspect over Departure Bay.
If you care about cleanliness then this is the place for you. The house has a brand new feel to it. We even tried to find the odd scuff or scrape here or there on the skirting board trim but couldn't! It really is immaculate. The house opens out onto a good sized patio that leads down a few short steps to the shingle beach. The sunrises and evening sunsets we had from here were lifetime memories that we will never forget. There is a small neighborhood park a few minutes walk away along which was great for some quick playtime with the kids. There are also a couple of grocery stores within a couple minutes drive to get all the essentials. Due to the location on this side of Nanaimo it is also a nice quick drive to get up to Piper's lagoon and Neck Point for an evening walk
A big selling point for several in our group was the ability to pay a little extra and use the 3 kayaks available at the property. This was something we took advantage of every day and Su has done a great job of keeping a well-stocked selection of PFD's paddles and gear to suit all types.
Any good vacation home can be judged by how likely you are to return and it's a given that we will be back to stay again. Su has very competitive rates given the quality of the accommodation and it's waterfront location and we couldn't recommend it highly enough. We have already suggested it to friends and other family members as the place to stay in Nanaimo. Can't wait to come again soon!
This was the second time that my 3 sisters and I stayed at Su's vacation home. We walked in the door and it was like we had been gone only a few hours instead of 1.5 years. The house was just as spectacular this time as it was the first time and so was the view. I've been reading some of the other reviews and every one of them captures a different aspect from the cleanliness to the quality of furniture, from the amenities to the view. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. This place is top-notch and I don't think you could find anything better for the price.
We decided that this will be our home every year for our annual visit to see our Dad and step mother. We've already booked for 2017. Thanks, Su! You make the trip so easy to plan because we don't have to think about the accommodations - except to anticipate our arrival and stay. :-)
We stayed at this wonderful home for 12 nights, When we arrived Su was there to meet us and show us around the house, It was just spectacular from the inside to the outside , we well and truly had everything and more in this home from beach towels to every kitchen appliance in the cupboards and drawers that you could possibly want, the beds and furniture were exquisite, it was such a large house and Su had gone to great lengths on buying the most wonderful items to furnish this home for people to enjoy and relax when they come for a holiday, even down to binoculars and shopping bags in the huge closet.
We loved the bikes and the kayaks at the house too, it was so lovely to just sit and look at the view for hours, We had lovely BBQS and watched the float planes and ferries come and go this home was simply wonderful so don't hesitate about it , JUST BOOK IT I just want to end by saying that Su had gone above and beyond with this home and she was so very responsive to our question and need too, and made recommendations on a few things for us which was great too.
We stayed at this wonderful house for a week in June. Everything about it was great. My 91-year-old Mom spent hours just watching the action on Departure Bay -- even when the "action" was just sunlight sparkling on the water with a backdrop of snow-covered peaks in the distance. Sometimes a seal would show up, and then the binoculars, provided on both floors of the house, came in handy. Our teen girls loved the bikes and the kayaks, also provided. And my wife and I loved the clean and cozy comfort of the house. The kitchen was really well stocked, beds were very comfortable with top drawer linens, and the three bathrooms were well equipped and modern. Su was wonderful: so helpful and friendly. We never did meet, but she was responsive to our every question and need.
We loved this property and would not hesitate to return.
The home was perfect. In the house are all do you need for a perfect hollyday:-).
