About Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff

We built our dream vacation home to share with family and friends in 2001. As South Dakota natives, we have roots in the Black Hills (Sturgis and Rapid City), but live in eastern SD, near Mitchell. Our family (children & grandchildren) have created many memories in this cabin...and we hope you'll create your own family treasures. May your time here strengthen the bonds of friend and family, and bless you with rest and relaxation.

Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff chose Black Hills

We love the Black Hills...as an active outdoor family, the decision to have a home on Terry Peak was an easy one. We do it all: including skiing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, sledding, fishing, golfing...the list is pretty long, actually. For all these reasons and more, we love our cabin in the Hills.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin is set apart because of its unique floor plan. We saw a lot of cabins before we decided on this special property. With 3 bedrooms on separate floors (and each with its own full bathroom) we can give our guests and family the private space (and quiet) that they deserve when vacationing. We also have a private lot, with no neighbors on 3 sides. Love that!

Wonder Cabin / Home

  • 4 of 5

We stayed 5 nights, very quiet location, nice home, and cozy. Pictures represent the home, 3 floors, clean and lots of room for large families. We unloaded our ATV's and rode the local trails from the cabin. Location to Grocery Store and shopping within 5 to 10 minutes drive time. Local National Parks, 45 to 60 minutes. Owners respond quickly to all your questions or concerns.

Clean, beautiful view through the pine trees, well maintained

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our six night stay. There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The hot tub was in great shape and we got to watch two deer bed down for the night in the trees below the cabin. Highly recommend this property and the owners.

This is a wonderful property, located in the beautiful Black Hills.

We enjoyed our week in the Dutch Treat cabin at the end of April. We chose it based on the fact that there were three distinct and independent living areas. We were a family group of Mom/Dad; daughter and son-in-law #1; and daughter, son-in-law #2 and 17 month old grandson. Each area had a bedroom (2 on upper level) and a complete bathroom. That was key to our choice and worked out very well for us. We heard almost nothing between the lower level and the main floor. The upper level opened on to the main floor so didn't provide as much separation but that was okay for the adult couples.

The cabin was tastefully decorated, clean, and well-appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed. We especially appreciated the extra shelves in the bathrooms so we had someplace to put our things. We appreciated a good supply of tissues around the house. The two gas fireplaces kept us cozy and warm. The foosball table was a bonus and there even were some toys for our baby to use. (There is a hot tub on the deck, too, but we didn't use it so can't comment.)

The cabin is located on a gravel road off the Terry Peak Ski Area above Lead, SD. The setting is absolutely gorgeous: built into a hill covered with pine and aspen trees. The ad was clear that 4-wheel drive would be necessary for winter. We just didn't know that winter would appear the last week of April! That made access in the fog over the curvy roads a little more challenging with our two cars. The access road did get cleared so we were not completely housebound. We just made it a point to be back before dark.

The owners were very easy to deal with. They answered all our questions promptly and even reimbursed us for the shovel we bought after theirs broke! I did recommend that they consider adding room darkening curtains in the bedrooms. Other than that, we were very happy with our vacation. We definitely would recommend it.

Nice cabin with helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

This property had everything you would need, especially in the kitchen. We spent 5 nights with 7 people and did all our own cooking, so I appreciated that the kitchen was so well stocked with about any small appliance you would need. The cabin was very comfortable, clean, and truly appreciated the owners! Any time we had a question, they got back to us very quickly. They helped make our family vacation successful. Would recommend this cabin very highly. Thank you Mark & Margaret for sharing your cabin with our family along with your great service of getting back to us when needed!!

Great Cabin With Lots of Room

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the Dutch Treat cabin. The views from the cabin are beautiful and it sits in a very quiet area. We had 3 families staying together and each family had it's own bathroom and bedroom. We would recommend the cabin to anyone wanting a relaxing retreat in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Perfect cabin for a group!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time staying here! It was the perfect amount of space for our group and everything is so nicely maintained! Location is great! Beautiful, and one of the taller peaks in the black hills so the views are breathtaking! Always a homey place to return to after we were out riding atVs. Highly recommend!

Notes:
Winter driving in Terry Valley Subdivision: 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicles are highly recommended in the subdivision in winter. All roads are plowed promptly, and intersections sanded. Excellent highway roads, last 1/4 mile is gravel.
