Lots of Space and Fabulous Views
Our big, comfortable, and fun retreat by Joshua Tree Park is perfect for large groups and families who need plenty of space to spread out. The original mid-century modern home is perfectly situated on an acre plus of beautiful indigenous plantings. Because of the unique geographic setting and architecture of the house, there are unobstructed mountain views from every room. We bought it in 2011 and have completely remodeled and upgraded everything about this magical location, inside and out.
Landscaping and Outside Features
You will find around 30 mature Joshua Trees as well as two recently planted orchards. Looking through this desert-lush landscape beyond to the mountains gives you an ever changing palette for your celebrations and festivities, as well as a serene and calming background for quiet times and reflection. The enclosed veranda (solid roof, screened wall panels and doors) shares our central Flintstone type fireplace and chimney so you can have a nice outside-feeling fire or barbecue with all the comforts of a fully furnished indoor room. We also provide charcoal grills and a propane grill in the fenced backyard area, perfect for pooches to run around in and chase cottontails, squirrels, and quail.
Living areas around this spacious veranda include a brand new cook's kitchen with two full ovens and a microwave, high-end dishwasher, plus a walk in pantry. You will also find plenty of dishes and cookware for easy entertaining. The main house has two bedroom/bath suites and a bonus media room with large flat screen TV. This bonus room provides another sleeping area with brand new lazy boy queen sofabed for two with its own half bath. The large living/dining area, which has French doors opening into the veranda, has a central humongous fireplace.
An additional brand new queen sized sofabed in this living space comfortably sleeps two, and has easy access to the half bath and to the shower bath that is attached to the green suite bedroom.
Separate Guest House
Attached to the main house by another roofed and screened in bonus porch there is also a guest house with full bath, kitchenette, living/dining area, and separate bedroom. The guest house living room has a day bed that sleeps two, and there is a queen sized sleep number bed in the guest house bedroom. Visitors to the guest house will share the full bath that is located ensuite with the queen bedroom.
The main house will comfortably sleep eight adults, and the guest house will sleep four. Each section of the home has its own access and private areas, inside and out. There is also a twin daybed with TV in the veranda area that is comfortable weather permitting.
Our remodel included new plumbing, electrical, paint, fresh tile, new appliances, new mattresses and furnishings, TV's in every room, new HVAC system throughout, the works. In the interest of comfort, safety, and accommodating everyone, there are grab bars in every bathroom and the master suite has a roll in shower, with ramp in and ramp out of the living space. The entire house is one one level and is ADA compliant whenever possible. For more convenience, our laundry room has brand new front loading, energy efficient machines, tile countertop, and utility sink.
Main House Amenities
With the goal of outfitting our home with all the comforts of a five star hotel, the master suite has its own mini frig, microwave, and coffee/tea seating area. The brand new king sized pillowtop bed is oriented so that you are facing the mountains. Down a small hallway is the media room, with a large new flat screen TV and comfortable seating. In this media room and in the living room there is a brand new LazyBoy queen sized sofabed with upgrade to a mattress that combines inner springs, compressed air, and memory foam to make a very comfortable sleeping space. The half bath adjacent to this room makes it a workable option for a couple to use as a bonus bedroom.
In the main house the second bedroom suite has its own shower bath and hallway to the outside veranda and living area. From the brand new, top of the line queen sized tempurpedic bed you can see the mountains and watch the fireplace too. In keeping with the time period of the architecture, the whole house is decorated in a retro/eclectic style, with many artistic touches and conversation pieces to explore.
A continuous run of extra large windows along the front of the house bring nature right in to you with total climate control. In the remodel we tried to be as 'green' as possible, so each space has its own cool/heat unit that can be individually regulated, somewhat like a hotel. Stay cool while you watch the hummingbirds in the summer sage, stay warm while the mountains are snowy! All of the systems are brand new and remote-controlled.
More Guest House Details
The guest house sleeps from two to four people. It has its own driveway, front door entrance, and a separate screened in and roofed porch that leads to an outside area with grill. The kitchenette has an apartment size refrigerator with icemaker, microwave, bar sink, hot plate, and large toaster oven available for cooking. All necessary dishes and flatware to make simple meals are provided. There is a dining area and TV in the guest house living room, and another TV in the adjacent bedroom. A full tub bathroom with shower looks out into the garden and trees beyond. Persons sleeping in the living room/kitchenette area of the guest house will share the full bath that is ensuite with the queen bedroom there.
Come and Enjoy it All
With its central location to all of the best of the Joshua Tree, Morongo Basin and Palm Springs area, The House of Three Wishes is the perfect home base, both for exploring and relaxing. We are adjacent to wild public areas where our dogs run free and so do we. Come discover and enjoy this gem of the high desert!
We are an architect and artist who love nature and good times. Once we updated our place we realized we should share, this spot is special. We followed good friends to this area on a whim, then completely fell in love with the high desert.
Martha Newman purchased this house in 2011
After a few visits we realized how great a getaway spot this is from the beach cities where we live. That may sound odd but the high desert vibe is different and fun. We love the clean air, clear skies, and wonderful people, venues, art shops, the whole package is other worldly and unique. It is nice to have all that space around us, where we can let the dogs off leash and howl at the harvest moon!
We had been trying for another property that was a short sale and the banks were not cooperating. Then we saw this one, with the ad saying it had 8 bathrooms and was designed by Frank Lloyd 'Write'! My husband said, we've got to see this place. Turned out it was a typo, 3.5 bathrooms and someone just added the numbers 3 and 5 together. I asked the realtor where the Frank Lloyd Wright allusion came from, he said, he just thought it looked like a Frank Lloyd Wright design, so he put that in the ad. When we saw it, we fell in love immediately. We found out that Frank Lloyd was in the area around the year our place was built, 1958, and he and his son designed several projects, including a public building just a few miles away on highway 62. Our place has a lot of elements that are reminiscent of his designs, so see for yourself and let us know what you think!
My family of 10 rented the house over Easter weekend to hike Joshua Tree and see the spring flowers. The house accommodated our large group, providing a bed for everyone who wanted one (we had a lot of singles who didn't necessarily want to share). The location was perfect, only a 10 minute ride from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center entrance (or a 20 minute ride to the less crowded Oasis Visitor Center entrance). The house was clean and well maintained. There was wifi throughout the house, although we found only 5 or so people could be connected at one time. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need to cook with and there were plenty of plates/utensils/cups. They even had a propane grill/smoker in the backyard and a fireplace in their screened-in porch area where we cooked s'mores every night. Everyone was comfortable and had a wonderful time. It was nice to have a place that was spacious enough to allow our extended family to get together at night, have dinner and play games. Martha was very accommodating and promptly answered all our questions both before and during our stay. I highly recommend this property.
This house was exactly what we were looking for when coming to Joshua Tree. It has such character and was everything we hoped it would be. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms were great. Martha and Family sure know how to make your experience all that it should be. Thank you again for letting us stay here. We look forward to staying here again in the future!
The home accommodated 10 guests comfortably – we had plenty of space and all slept very well. Each room had nice sheets and clean bedding. We entered the home and were stunned at the decor. It was colorful, bright and full of life. The kitchen is fully loaded to cook amazing meals at home with every appliance you can dream of including a coffee grinder! There are amazing views of the mountains from the windows. The neighborhood was beyond safe and secure. Everything is centrally located from the house, great restaurants, shops, J-Tree, Pioneertown, 29 Palms, etc.
Martha, the homeowner, was just as sweet as they come. She was very thorough and made sure we got in and out with ease.
The place is perfect!
We spent a weekend in the Joshua Tree area, and the House of Three Wishes provided more than enough room for our group of 10 (plus a dog). It's a unique property, with the main house separated from the cottage by a large furnished screened-in outdoor area. We used that area quite a bit, as well as the fenced in yard for the dog. Each room inside has it's own heating & air conditioning unit, and they worked perfectly (as did all the appliances). Some of us got a chance to use the entertainment room, which although small is a great place to watch a movie. There's also quite a selection of books to choose from. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the House of Three Wishes, and the owner (Martha) was a pleasure to deal with. After the reservation was confirmed, she e-mailed us a 6 page "Visitor's Handbook" with detailed information about the property, how to get there, nearby markets, etc. Very helpful!
From the first inquiry to the House of Three Wishes I knew the trip would be great. Martha was so quick and through to answer any questions and make sure the house met our needs even before booking! Once we got there we instantly felt at home. The entire house was equipped with anything you could need which made cooking so easy! We were a group of friends mostly couples and the house gave everyone their own space while also bringing everyone together. If we weren't cooking we spent most of the time in the Sun Room or outside. A beautiful Blue Jay visited every morning and the Joshua Trees out front were in bloom! Getting to the park was a breeze and the weather was perfect. We even took a little trip into Pioneertown (~13min drive) and I got to hold a baby goat! Once we left I realized I had left two things behind but again Martha went above and beyond and graciously made sure our things were returned. I feel relaxed and reenergized after the trip and would love to stay in the House of Three Wishes again!
We were a group of 8 teens and 2 adult chaperones and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the teens LOVED all the décor as did the adults! The rooms and beds were very comfortable and everything was extremely clean. The kitchen was awesome and fully stocked with everything we needed to cook. Martha, the owner was very responsive and helpful! We will definitely use this home again when planning another retreat weekend!
Our house is 3.9 miles from the west end of Joshua Tree National Park for hiking, rock climbing, and exploring exotic nature, yet we are also just a mile or two from a movie theater, several grocery stores and markets, and great eating choices (Mexican, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Thai, barbecue, breakfast cafes, hamburger stands, new age organic, the list goes on). For treasure hunters we have two flea markets and loads of shops selling everything from cast off wagon wheels to the craft of local artisans and unusual antiques.
Desert Hot Springs with all its spas, etc., is 23 miles away, Palm Springs is just a bit farther, at 30 miles. Another fun day trip takes you to Morongo Casino, 30 miles from us, or Fantasy Springs at 50 miles if you want to enjoy their spas and gaming. You can also take the back way to Big Bear and ski, that's 60 miles. Golfers in your group can enjoy a course a day for months with no repeats, while those wanting a more other worldly experience can visit the Integration by day and watch the clear bright skies for celestial events by night.
