Shh! Keep it a secret! Don't tell anyone about this Secret Escape, but in March 2014, a Telegraph newspaper article listed Andalucia number one of the "World's Top 20 Places for the Good Life", with a special mention of the area around Vera and Mojacar. Come for a taste of our amazing area....

For those seeking tranquillity in a truly stunning natural setting yet within reach of all facilities, this superbly appointed air-conditioned townhouse enjoys one of the very best locations within the idyllic time-warp Cortijo Grande valley. Casa Los Pinos bar/restaurant is just over a minutes' walk. The cosy 'Almazara' bar/restaurant is a 3-minute stroll, and there is also a vegetarian restaurant in the valley. There is a hotel with a restaurant, swimming pool and beach bar at the nearby Hostal Rural Tio Tomas on the road to Turre.

The 9-hole golf course in the valley is not a commercial venture at the moment but is playable thanks to local volunteers from Cortijo Grande Club de Golf who tend the greens. The golf course and the orange groves used to be watered from an underground volcanic lake, but this has now dried up, presumably due to climate change. The visiting herd of goats with tinkly bells come round every day to keep the weeds down! The superb professional 18-hole golf courses of Marina Golf Mojacar, Macenas and Valle De Este are all within 20 minutes' drive, and the fabulous international Desert Springs golf resort is 30 minutes' drive - Sir Ian Botham and other famous sports people have homes there.

The town of Turre with supermarkets, bars etc is 6 minutes' drive, and the major resort of Mojacar with all its facilities is less than 15-minutes' drive.

Cortijo Grande was originally a traditional Spanish village with orange groves. When the valley was developed in the 1970's, the original buildings were retained. Our house has been refitted in the traditional 'Rustica' style - see photos.

About the Levante area of Almeria: Almeria province has warmest and driest climate in Spain, with only 200mm annual rainfall and an average of over 300 days of sunshine each year. The fruit and vegetable industry is in the south of the province around Roquetas, but Cortijo Grande is in Northern Almeria, one of the most picturesque parts of Andalucia.

This part of Spain was ruled by the Moors until the 15th century, and Moorish influences can be seen everywhere from the ornate arches and windows to the domed buildings and terraced hillsides. Every village celebrates its Moors & Christians fiesta every year, with mock battles and parades - just one of the many fiestas in this area.

The Costa Almeria is unspoilt. You will not find any high-rise apartments in this area, and if you're a keen driver you'll love the quiet roads and the lack of traffic lights. The beach resorts of Mojacar and Garrucha are within an easy 15-minute drive, and there you will find loads of tapas bars and many kinds of restaurants.

Local Attractions: Don't miss the great ceramic shops at Nijar. Further on is Almeria city with its designer shops, tapas bars and the massive Alcabaza castle overlooking the city.

The large town of Aguilas is a little over half an hour away, with its marina, railway museum, tidy parks and shopping.

The ancient city of Cartagena is about an hour away to the north via an excellent scenic toll motorway. This lovely town is Spain's main naval port, and you will find a Roman amphitheatre, stunning buildings and museums, plus ships and maybe a cruise liner in the bay.

Around El Cortijo Grande: There are many walks around the valley - you'll see wild herbs and orchids along the way. It's a bird-watcher's paradise. Horse-riding is available at the Moorish village of Cabrera just up the hill from the valley, where you can admire the views and even have a fabulous Moroccan meal at the magnificent Riad Cabrera.

Nature lovers often leave the car at the townhouse - there are plenty of easy walks nearby, including the remains of an ancient mosque and even the old airfield and control tower featured in the first Indiana Jones film. There are laminated walking maps in the house and we can recommend walks along the ramblas, or why not follow the old railway track at Bedar to explore the beautiful Serena valley. Explorers are welcome, and you may even like to join the local Mojacar Walking Group on one of their expeditions. And there are birds galore, in fact we get many more birdwatchers and walkers than golfers as guests.

There is parking for the house within around 9 feet of the front door and the ground is flat and level.

About Jim Mackie

We bought our townhouse as a holiday home to spend our winters and rent out in summer. We hadn't planned to buy a townhouse in Cortijo Grande, but after viewing other property in the area, we went out for a drive one day and stumbled onto something like a scene from 'The Sound of Music', except this was January and folk were sunbathing on their terraces and balconies. In 2007, we decided that we wanted to live in this wonderful unspoilt area full time, but we needed a bigger house, so we now have a villa in nearby Bédar village and rent our townhouse all year round.

Jim Mackie purchased this house in 2006

Why Jim Mackie chose Turre

We looked at all sorts of properties in El Cortijo Grande valley, including some large and expensive villas. No property at any price had the views which our townhouse enjoys. We bought the view and the house came with it ! We're busy with rentals all year round, and you'll find people sunbathing in January. Apart from the amazing views, we love the fact that the valley is tucked away from the holiday crowds, yet only 15 minutes from the coast. The main Mediterranean motorway is less than 10 minutes away, so getting around is easy.

What makes this house unique

The old golf clubhouse and bar is in a rustic 300 year old building and there are two bar/restaurants within easy walking distance, plus a restaurant with a swimming pool near the entrance to the valley. El Cortijo Grande is a protected valley, and nothing has been built here for over 20 years. We get a real kick out of taking new visitors onto the terrace and hearing them say 'Wow!' when they see the views. Many of our renters have been keen walkers and birdwatchers. We get a lot of winter lets, as Almeria has the mildest and driest climate in Europe and we seem to rent to a lot more arthritis sufferers than golfers! We're delighted that all our guests have loved how we've developed our house and they have all looked after it really well during their visits.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This place is the real deal. We walked for miles around the valley and up to Cabrera, saw kingfishers, wagtails and bee-eaters. We spent a lot of time chilling out around the pool at Los Limoneros, nice place ! Although some of the roads around there could have been smoother.

After quite a few indifferent holidays in noisy apartments, this was so peaceful that we sometimes missed quite a lot of the day sleeping. And thank goodness for the air con - it kept us cool in the hottest August afternoons. Salud ! S.S.

A wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I had a wonderful holiday at this townhouse. The property has the necessary rental license and Jim sorted the little bit of admin in advance. We were safe in the knowledge that everything was being done legally and that our recent disaster with renting a holiday home in Benaldmadena would not be repeated.

The owner Jim met our hired car coming off the motorway and we followed him down to the house, only 5 minutes or so. The house is just so cute and lovely with big French doors onto a big terrace with the most amazing views of the golf course, mountains and right down to the med. We loved to sit on the terrace as the sun went down, watching the colors change in the hills to an amazing warm pink. As for the peace - the noisiest thing we heard all week were the birds.

The house is really well equipped with everything we could ever need, plenty of cutlery, dishes, pots etc. plus a toaster, coffee machine and even a juicer which we used for the oranges which we got at Turre market - 2 kilos for a euro. There was a very generous welcome pack included in the price with beer, cava, chorizo, chutney, jam, cheese, croissants, cakes and basics like milk, coffee and tea. And toiletries were also provided, so when we arrived we were able to shower then chill out with some cava and some lunch before having to venture out to the shops. Jim's guest book is full of information about how to work the TV, DVD player, white goods, air con etc plus market days, restaurants, days out. He really made us feel welcome and took time to explain everything and answer all our questions. In fact, in many years of holidaying, we don't remember being as well looked-after. We both slept very well in the large and very comfy bed (king-size?).

And would we return? Oh yes.

Not bad but the place needs a urgent update, to many humidity spots in the living and in the bedrooms. We were pleased though by the welcome of Jim. Fantastic vieuws

Owner's Response: We're puzzled. Our house was built in the same way as the vast majority of houses in Almeria until recently - without damp proof course or rainwater guttering and down pipes. Anyone contemplating buying a house here in the driest climate in Europe should be aware of this. When we do get rain, having no damp proof course can of course cause humidity. This guest seems to have found "humidity spots" which clearly affected his holiday, so we can only apologise for these "humidity spots" which our maintenance man and other recent guests failed to notice. As for the comment about our house needing an "urgent update" - We had a new kitchen and staircase fitted not long after the new bathroom was installed and re-tiled. The king-size bed was new 2 years ago and the lounge suite was replaced about 3 years ago. Both our terraces were re-tiled and the interior of the house was decorated 2 years ago. The washing machine, fridge freezer, elecrtic immerser, Panasonic smart TV and DVD player were all replaced in 2016. The front exterior of the house and most of the exterior woodwork were treated and re-painted in December 2017 by our maintenance man at a cost to us of over 700 euros. I did mention to the guest that we had had a water leak and that a plasterer was supposed to re-plaster the exterior of the bathroom walls before Christmas, but that he had let us down, but he seemed unconcerned. Our house is in the Spanish traditional "Rustica" style as stated in our web page and we had a skilled carpenter who took great trouble to source traditional materials. Some guests have hailed our carpenter's work in the twin room as genius. All our other guests seem to like our house this traditional way. No mention was made in this review of the Christmas welcome pack of food and drinks which we provided, along with Christmas goodies for the two children, all free of charge. It would seem that Belgians are not easy to please!

Can't wait to return

  • 5 of 5

The view is to die for. I loved waking up in this house and seeing the sun rise above the mountains. It's so peaceful and relaxing. The stars at night are amazing too!

The house is well equipped and very comfortable. It was the perfect size for our family of 4 and we had everything we needed.

The location is great with a restaurant/bar on the doorstep and its only 4 miles to Turre which has a brilliant supermarket, Friday market, bars and restaurants. You are 7.5 miles from Mojacar pueblo (we know as we ran it one day!!) so you have the beauty of both worlds: peaceful location but within easy reach of everything you need.

Jim and Connie were great hosts and we had the best welcome pack we've ever seen waiting for us. They thoughtfully told us about restaurants and events during our stay also.

Would we return? In a heartbeat. We love Almeria and have stayed in various places but this is a new favourite and we hope to return soon. We already miss the view, the sun, the goats and Spanish life.

Thankyou for a wonderful stay.

A relaxing peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

Jim and Connie , the owners, could not have been more helpful. They saved us from a very tricky situation and provided us with great local knowledge.

The house is fully equipped and comfortable. All you need is your food as everything else is provided, eg washing up liquid, shampoo etc, oh and some lovely treats in the fridge! The only thing that could have made it better is for the path from the garden to the golf course to be cleared but apart from that, top marks all round. A wonderful place to relax and unwind

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review. To clarify, we don't own the path in question beyond our terrace as it's the property of the estate owners Colt. For security reasons, we do not want this path cleared under any circumstances - the spiky cactus-type plants constitute protection against any intruders from attempting to enter our property from the old golf course.

Cortijo grande hide away

  • 5 of 5

As we booked the first two weeks in April, while the weather was just perfect for a pair of pasty Brits like ourselves.

Fantastic views from our balcony coupled with complete peace and quiet, all within the astonishingly beautiful southern Spanish countryside.

Connie and Jim are perfect hostes and made us both feel very much at home from start to finish.

From Cortijo Grande, the bustling town of Turre is 6 minutes' drive, with good shops, an amazing supermarket and many bars and restaurants. The beach resorts of Mojacar & Garrucha are a 15-minute drive, with loads of tapas bars & restaurants. Mojacar has several beaches.

The ancient Moorish hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo (seen in the distance) is a must, with its cobbled streets and alleyways, great shops, music venues, cultural centre & restaurants. There are other white villages to visit, including Bedar & Nijar.

There is a marina and go-karting at Garrucha. At Vera there is the oldest bullring in Spain, a naturist beach and water park. The Mini Hollywood theme park & zoo, where the spaghetti westerns were made, is 40 minutes away at Tabernas; you can visit the caves at Sorbas on the way..

The Cabo de Gata natural park is 30 minutes south, and well worth a visit for its award-winning beaches, spectacular scenery & lovely coastal villages with boats parked on the beach.

Golf: The townhouse is situated on the edge of the 9th fairway of the former 9-hole golf course, which is set among orange groves. The setting and the views are simply awesome, and really need to be experienced rather than read about in print. The orange groves are watered from an underground volcanic lake, and the valley is a veritable paradise even for non-golfers. Golf equipment including electric buggies are available for hire at the clubhouse, about 3 minutes' walk from the townhouse. There is a rustic bar/restaurant at the clubhouse, which is in a very old building located where the original village of El Cortijo Grande was built.

The 18-hole golf courses of Marina Golf Mojacar, Valle De Este and the new Playa Macenas course at Mojacar are all within 20 minutes drive, and the international Desert Springs course (where Sir Ian Botham and Daley Thompson have homes) is 25 minutes away, but these are modern courses in settings which are simply not on a 'par' with the natural valley of Cortijo Grande.

For golfers not wishing to take their clubs on the plane, we can prep-book golf club hire for our guests for just 30 euros per stay (no time limit on use of clubs) and this includes 20 golf balls.

There are excellent transport and motorway links. Cortijo Grande is about 45 minutes from Almeria Airport, and the stone-arched entrance to Cortijo Grande is less than 3km from junction 520 from Junction 520 of the major European motorway - the Autovia del Mediterraneo.

Murcia San Javier airport is an hour and quarter away via the stunning new AP-7 toll motorway. Alicante airport is just over 2 hours away via the same motorway, but has a wide range of flights. Pick up a hire car at the airport. Drivers will relish the quiet roads - not a traffic light for miles!

Flights are available to Almeria Airport from Stansted, Gatwick, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Birmingham and East Midlands.

Flights are available to Murcia Airport from London Stansted, Gatwick & Luton plus Birmingham, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow Prestwick, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool and Manchester.

Granada airport is 2 hours away with flights from Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester.

To search for the best flights for your needs, may we suggest the search engine.skyscanner

Ski: Winter skiing is available at the Sierra Nevada mountains around Granada, just over 2 hours away.
