A bright, sunny apartment in an ancient village called Virgoletta on a hill between Villafranca and Bagnone only 2.5km from a beautiful swimming pool complex and 35 minutes drive from the beach. Recently restored with a panoramic terrace, French doors to the living room, a large kitchen/dining room, a beautiful bathroom, and two bedrooms upstairs.
With magnificent views from the house and the terrace to the Apennines.
Steps lead up from the narrow cobbled street where all village life takes place. The single street leads to the castle at the head of the town. It is possible to drive to the door for unloading, and there is a large carpark nearby.
The property is probably 13th century but has been recently restored throughout. The village has a small 'shop' that sells bread and milk in the morning, with a range of shops, bars and restaurants in Villafranca 2 km away which also has a large swimming pool complex and a train station with trains to Florence, La Spezia, and Parma.

We left a cold and frosty England and after disembarking a short trouble free Ryanair flight were pleasantly surprised by the difference in temperature Pisa had to offer. Bye bye clouds, hello sunshine. The transition to the hire car was swift and easy and within 20 mins we were parked up in central Pisa. From the control tower of East Midlands to the leaning tower in less than 3hrs!
We drove to the property in about 50 mins via the toll road and found it quite easily; a quiet 13th century village perched typically on a Tuscan hillside. There was a short walk from the car park through the main cobbled street passing several small tranquil squares, perfect for a spot of people watching Italian style.
The house itself perfectly matched the description given by the owners, the kitchen was well equipped with all the mod cons should you wish to stay in and cook, however you are in Italy and with an abundance of local restaurants offering a wide range of tasty and very reasonably priced food complete with their selection of great regional wines, it would be sinful to pass up the opportunity to dine out.
The kitchen flowed into the lounge which also adjoined the dining room with its view over the valley. However the real star of the show was the breathtaking vista of the snow capped Apennine Mountains you saw from the terrace leading out from the dining room. This was where we spent most of our time; it was the ideal place to eat breakfast, right through to watching the sun go down at night.
With so many places to visit within a short drive the five days we spent there were without question not enough. All in all the whole experience was immensely relaxing. Good communication with the owners along with clear directions added to a most pleasurable stay. We are happy to recommend this property to others and give it.....Cinque stelle!
To start we had excellent communication from the owners who go out of their way to ensure you have full details of the accommodation and what to look forward to.
Access to this delightful accommodation is a short distance along a narrow street then up a steep flight of steps into the walls of the medieval village. The two bedrooms and living area are wrapped around other 'apartments' then extend to a terrace with a fantastic view of the mountains to the east and other villages to the north.
The kitchen facilities are good, clean and with plenty of work surfaces, and the bathroom is tiled, modern and spacious and has a view too. The other living areas have character in keeping with the building and are comfortable. The terrace is the place to lap up the views, sun and atmosphere of this place. We had mixed weather but it was the beginning of October, so didn't dine out on the terrace but we could still appreciate the fantastic views and changing light and sounds.
The location of the village Virgoletta is excellent. It is only a couple of km from Villafranca with facilities and also easy access to the autostrada. This means with a car you have access to the coast, the Apennines, the Apuane Mountains, (Carrara marble mountain) and further afield Florence, Lucca and even Pisa if you fancy. There are also good train connections from nearby stations if the driver wants a rest. More local highlights are other medieval villages with their mazes of alleyways and piazzas with cafes, restaurants and small shops with local produce and walks and hikes if you are more energetic.
A fabulous area, an excellent location and a comfortable and homely apartment. What more do you need?
Clean ,well kept and quaint in a lovely unspoiled village.Great contact with owner re every detail. They couldn't have been more helpful.Steep stairs so you need good mobility. Great area but you have a car because if not very hard to explore .
Wonderful setting that never ceases to impress in all weathers. The apartment was clean, well equipped and welcoming and very peaceful. All you can hear are several sets of church bells all chiming at slightly different times! Plenty of accurate and detailed information, maps, restaurant recommendations in the property. We sampled several restaurants and heartily agreed with the reviews. Tried out a new one in Filetto which became our favourite, we have written about it in the guest book. We hired a car but enjoyed renting bikes from 'Due Ruote' to explore the local area.
We will be back again - so much more to do but we also like to read and relax with a bottle of prosecco whilst on holiday. Thank you
Situated in a stereotypical Tuscan village, you get an authentic Italian experience. Very comfortable and homely apartment with lots of personal touches and an abundance of local information and recommendations. The large terrace has stunning views you could look out on all day and the kitchen is well equipped, so it is easy to cook up some pasta and while away the evening on the terrace with a bottle of local wine.
For swimmers and sunbathers, the local Olympic Pool complex is less than 10mins drive away and has fantastic facilities.
There are many places of interest and stunning countryside within easy reach. A car is essential, and a satnav handy, but the driving was very straightforward and there is beautiful Tuscan scenery on every journey - 1 hour from Pisa Airport, 50mins from lovely sandy beaches, just over 1 hour to Lucca, 2 hours to Florence. Many other pretty villages, restaurants, supermarket and other amenities just a short drive away.
It was a fantastic relaxing break - if you are looking to take in some sights, but also get away from it all and enjoy a slower pace of life, this is the place to go. Highly recommended.
We would highly recommend this house to anyone who wants to get away from it all. The locals are friendly, the property is well equipped and the view from the balcony stunning. Due to the location of the house, you need a car but that is a bonus as it means you can travel to other nearby places of interest and make the most of your time in this wonderful country!
The owners are very professional and they provide excellent customer service and value for money.
If you want to get away from it all and experience traditional Italian life, then this is the place for you!
The shops, weekly markets, bars and restaurants of Bagnone and Villafranca are 5 to 10 minutes away by car. The local area is full of medieval castles and beautiful walks and to cool off there is an Olympic sized Swimming Pool, jacuzzi & children's leisure pools 2 km away or swimming in the river pools at Bagnone. At the swimming pool complex you can also play tennis on indoor or outdoor courts.
Our apartment is centrally located for visiting Parma with it's beautiful architecture and gastronomic delights or the walled city of Lucca , to ride bicycles along the top of the city walls, visit the birthplace of Puccini or climb some of the many towers.
For the beach lover, Marinella di Sarzana offers a choice of private and free public beaches and Lerici has two safe, sandy beaches and a beautiful castle. From here, take the ferry across to Portovenere to explore the beautiful Cinque Terre.
Fosdinovo, 45 minutes away by car, has a beautiful castle, stunning views and a high ropes adventure park for all ages. Walkers are spoilt for choice in the Garfagnana region 30 minutes away by car.

Golf: There is a golf club in Villafranca and a golf driving range and golf course at Ca del Moro outside Pontremoli, 30 minutes from the apartment.
