If I might make one suggestion for a comfortable, leisurely week of true vacationing, this became & remains a standard tradition for us after a few visits to Lake Gaston: where several families vacation together, have each family plan, prepare & provide meals for one day; then save the leftovers for later in the week for snacking. It has worked out wonderfully well for us for years, allowing everyone to prepare & present their favorite dish or delicacy for all, while preventing unnecessary & repeat trips to the grocery store during our vacation. This allowed us time to just have fun on the water & not even think about 'what's for dinner' or 'who's cooking?!'
For the sports enthusiast, Lake Gaston offers a wake boarding school on the lake--this may require scheduling or prior reservations (owned by none other than the infamous Adam Fields-AF Wake, Inc.); annual local area events sponsored by the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce, including the following, are sure to delight all: Memorial Day weekend brings the Battle of the BBQ at the Lake Gaston Chamber, June offers the Art & Wine Festival on the 2nd Saturday, July brings the fireworks display at the Eaton Ferry bridge on the Saturday closest to the 4th, the Littleton/Lake Gaston Festival brings in Labor Day (featuring local custom & exotic car show), & the Annual Seafood Festival falls in October, just to mention a few. All of these events are enjoyable & relaxing & may offer something for everyone right here in Lake Country! Lake Gaston celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013!
The covered pavilion, conveniently accessible from the lower level floor or the front parking area sidewalk & with stairs to the main & second levels, offers comfortable seating for 20-30 people easily at the tables & the tiered bar, all while keeping all your beverages cool within an easy distance of your pool &/or lake side gatherings! This way no one has to worry about stocking the cooler & dragging it out to the pool--all with your convenience in mind! Oh yes, there is also a stereo system (compatible with most phones) located under the pavilion for radio stations &/or all your favorite tunes!
Telephone (landline) is available with intercom to five locations, for ease in keeping everyone informed of plans!
NOTE: Chef service is available for hire for meal preparation with advance appointment! Home owner has contact information if your party requires additional resources.
Call for any questions! We look forward to your visit!
Mike and I grew up and met in North Carolina. He is a former Army Ranger and received his bachelor's engineering degree from the University of Texas. I graduated from Wake Tech and Campbell University with an associate's degree in engineering and a bachelor's degree in business management. Being avid recreational skiers, after we wed, we received a post card advertising Lake Gaston & decided to check it out. Once was all it took to have us "hooked" & then we just couldn't get enough! We spent weekends at first, then started scheduling annual vacation weeks, gradually bringing family & friends with us & introducing them to Lake Gaston. After a few years we made a plan to work our way to the lake--it took a little while but it was worth it! We are full-time Lake Gaston residents now & love the area. The water is always clean, refreshing & inviting, the sunsets & sunrises are 'to die for,' & as mom always said: 'The water keeps you young!' It is the best life imaginable! We are fortunate & Blessed to be able to live at Lake Gaston full-time, work here a& raise our family on the majestic shores of Lake Gaston! Life is good...! Each day offers new beginnings, so once our life was transitioned to Lake Gaston living, we have never looked back, so to speak! Once you get a taste of heaven on earth, it's hard to imagine life anywhere else!
Dora Smith purchased this estate in 2011
We bought this property with the idea of offering the ultimate vacation home rental ever! The location on the lake is superb, offering 600+ feet of mostly private waterfront shoreline with a gradual slope to the boathouse. Mike & I stumbled upon this exact unique location several years ago & dreamt of how it would be most excellent to gaze at this awesome view everyday, but had no idea then it would be ours one day! Years later, here we are! And we like to share it with you! Nature abounds here, from osprey to eagles, turtles & more in & on the property! Watch these magnificent birds as they go about their daily life & routine, even swooping down and bringing up HUGE catfish for dinner, right before your eyes! This is the ultimate vacation home at Lake Gaston, a place we live, love & enjoy. We started visiting the lake area & renting waterfront homes ourselves a few years ago, then decided this was where we enjoyed life the most. The folks around the lake want to be here, so life is good & most people are friendly! Our yellow lab loves the water almost as much as we do--maybe more--she jumps in the lake at least once everyday, whether we do or not! She comes out with icicles in the winter time! The water always feels good to you & mornings are amazing! We are morning people, so if you are too, just get your cup of coffee & sit out on the deck & watch the sun rise off the water. We have fresh water otters that like to visit the dock next door, so you might catch a peek at them too! Take in all the pleasures you can all day long, then return to the deck for the grand finale--the sun sets are 'to die for!' Visit restaurants by boat, cruise the lake after dinner, whatever you enjoy is right here in front of you! This is the moment you've been waiting for, so take some time together to enjoy your friends & family now & share a lifetime of memories! What a tradition it can be! If you get just a taste of this lake lifestyle, I'm sure you'll love it too, just as we do!
I love the pool & pavilion, the lakeside hot tub, the grand great room, the unbelievable spacious gourmet kitchen featuring nothing less than the best, w/BUNN commercial coffee maker w/on demand automatic hot water supply for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. & two burners for warming up to 24 cups of coffee w/quick (almost instant) brewing. (Just remember to turn the coffee pots off after breakfast!) Another favorite is the game room & the lower level den w/air hockey & private gym w/treadmills. The overall openness of this home, from the catwalk to the massive fireplace to the arched window that opens to the 2nd floor's lake side deck, will charm & pamper you with it's elegance and style! No disappointments here--entertainment abounds, whether you like to be a spectator or get involved! On a lazy day, just sit on the back deck with your morning coffee or evening beverage, swim in the pool in the afternoon or just enjoy watching those that do, cruise on the lake, read a book or watch a movie in the theater room--just taking it all in! Play a little foosball or shoot a little pool, whatever you like! There is something here for everyone! Summer nights offer pleasant temperatures and comfy water for floating & swimming to wrap up a perfect day! Or just float in the water off the dock while sipping your favorite beverage. But in the end, it's really the WATER that you remember--clean, crisp & inviting! Whether it's the lake or the pool, you'll leave feeling rejuvenated & clean! The osprey are entertaining seasonal; eagles are around year round! You never know what surprise nature has in store for you during your stay here--just come & see! For a wonderful vacation to remember & talk about for a lifetime, here's your chance! We have several repeat guests. Call for any questions. Thank you for looking at our listing & we hope you can come & enjoy it, even if only for a week, to experience it for yourselves! It is truly a taste of HEAVEN ON EARTH!
We were blown away by this house! We kept turning corners around the house and finding more rooms! It was everything you could need for a vacation with a large group and more. The open layout in the kitchen/family room was awesome for hanging out with a big group and feeling like you could all be together. Everything was top of the line and felt brand new - we didn't want to leave! The outside area was the best part, the pool was beautiful and had places for everyone to hang out and spend the day in the sun! We loved the dock area also and being able to swim not only in the pool but the lake! One of the best parts was being able to watch the sunset from the pool or one of the many decks overlooking the lake. Overall, can't say enough good things about this house! Can't wait to hopefully be back!
We had a terrific week at this home. The home was huge and allowed everyone their own space. The location on the lake is a bit remote but nice and quiet. Pool was terrific and we loved the outdoor pool and bar area. Decks and sunsets were awesome. The owners were very responsive to any issues we had. We would have liked to have used the hot tub but it was not allowed during July. We were used to using hot tubs in OBX family vacations. We found the dining room table a bit small for our large group so we had to separate at meals. Overall a great house for big groups.
We had our corporate branch outing this past Friday for the day. Not only did it meet our expectations, but we are hoping to have our outing there again next year. Everything was immaculate and we had no issues with anything. Our group works hard and were able to relax and enjoy the swimming pool, theater room and just hanging out in general on the gorgeous porches overlooking the lake. The owners were more than accommodating to our needs and very easy to work with. We did not utilize the entire house, but even touring it, could not believe the spaciousness - almost like having your own private hotel/retreat. Very nicely appointed property!
The property is perfect for a large family vacation, especially with children. We spent a lot of time in the wonderful pool and had many fishing and tubing expeditions on the family-size boat. We hired full time cooks for all meals, so the spacious gourmet kitchen with lots of refrigerator, freezer and storage space was just want we needed. There were more entertainment amenities and things to do than we had time for. You can't go wrong staying here.
Start off with the ONLY issue we had: the hot tub was foamy when we got there. Dora and her husband came out Sunday after church to take a look at it and skimmed it off. However, being a hot tub owner, it should have been drained or at the least added an anti-foam agent. Was not used much.
The good: The most luxurious and well-maintained house I have ever stayed at in 6 years of summer extended HUGE family gatherings. Top of the line appliances, granite countertops, phenomenal pool with slide, PLENTY of seating outside with the outside bar perfect for late night adult rowdiness. Windows kept the sound out from partying at night while kids were asleep, and the theatr was a big hit with everyone.
I wish we could go back but the odds of getting all 27 people together again are slim to none. They were most gracious and responsive to all my questions leading up to our stay, and as I said, came personally to "attend" to my complaint.
We visited with three generations of a family, aging in range from 3-71, and had a wonderful long weekend. The pictures don't do justice to how spectacular this home is. It is truly designed for fun for all ages and large groups: the pool with colored lights, outdoor speakers, built in volleyball net and bar; the huge hot tub and gas fire pit; wonderful deck seating; foosball, pool, air hockey, game tables; incredible movie room; large very nice and well-appointed kitchen; and the great lakeside dock with a tall platform for jumping off and canoes for exploring the lake. And I could go on! We had so much fun and I don't think you could ever run out of things to do or great spots to relax. Thank you for sharing your home with us, we hope we can come back again someday!!
Lake Gaston is one of the truly outstanding fresh water lakes in the country! It is over 20,000 acres of "high quality" water, 34 miles long, and approximately one and one half miles wide at the lower end of the lake. Lake Gaston offers 350 miles of shoreline for your fresh water lake and sports enjoyment, whether you favor water sports, fishing, kayaking or just watching breath-taking sunrises and sunsets and wildlife from the dining room, pool or one of the lakeside decks.
Lake Gaston begins on the western end at Kerr Dam, built in 1953 for flood control. Below Lake Gaston is Roanoke Rapids Lake, a smaller lake built in 1955 for hydroelectric power. The Gaston Dam was completed in 1963, and Lake Gaston borders the counties of Mecklenburg and Brunswick in Virginia and Warren, Halifax and Northampton in North Carolina. Normal height of the water is 200 feet above sea level and by regulation the water depth may vary only one foot plus or minus from the normal level except in case of emergency. And with virtually no pollution, the water is almost drinkable without treatment.
Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish which include striped bass or rock fish, large mouth bass, crappie, sunfish and several varieties of catfish. Other species of fish sometimes caught are walleye, yellow perch and chain pickerel. Lake Gaston fishing tournaments are popular throughout the season. A valid fishing license for either Virginia or North Carolina permits fishing on Lake Gaston from a boat in either state. No license is required for those under 15.
With prior arrangements, Top This Pizza delivers food and cold beverages (alcohol included) to your door, pool or lakeside! Rosemont Winery, just 5-10 minutes away, offers guided tours, wine tasting and seasonal festivals and outdoor activities, including Art Shows, car shows, etc. Several local restaurants, waterfront clubs and fast food facilities offer food and entertainment, with an easy commute by car and boat. Or bring in a chef to prepare and manage all your meals! When all else fails and you just want to relax, excellent fishing is as close as the shoreline, right off the pier, or from your boat.
For the boating enthusiast, motor boating, sailing, tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing are all popular Lake Gaston water sports. Public boat ramps are available, and marinas are scattered around the shoreline, offering gas and supplies as well as lakeside dining.
Good restaurants, shopping, and cultural activities can be enjoyed year round in the cities & towns around the area. For offshore recreation there are golfing facilities, both public and private in close proximity. (Ask Owner for reservation). Area residents often participate in the many nearby clubs which offer a wide variety of choices, including gardening, travel, recreation & more.
Lake Gaston hosts several Pro Bass Fishing Tournaments annually, if that's any indication of the fishing opportunity that awaits you here! Where else can you sit on the lower boat dock and watch the fish jumping in the lakeside cove, watch the ospreys, otters and other area wildlife from the lakeside pool, boathouse or main lake decks--even from the lakeside windows?! The upper deck is a great place to watch the Osprey perform their morning and late afternoon fishing survival routines! Photo opportunities include wonderful observation of both the Osprey and the fresh water otters jumping off the boathouse dock next door and playing in the beautiful, crystal clear water! Or catch a glimpse (or photos) of the row of turtles along the shoreline in the cove on the poolside If you like nature, you've got a lot waiting for you right here! It's not unusual when starting down the driveway to discover a family of deer grazing on the lawn, and watch them scurry off along the shoreline of the subdivision, hurriedly and frightfully scampering across the back yards of the other homes until they are out of sight! Discover the peace and serenity of Lake Gaston living, for a week or for a lifetime! (Dora is a licensed Realtor). This location offers privacy and serenity in an "off the beaten path" main lake location. It is centrally located on the lake, with wide water for optimum views down the lake, resulting in 2-3 miles of open view.
Virginia has an ideal year round climate for your enjoyment.
