* NOTE - our other suite, Casa Canuck Suite B (457116), has two additional windows overlooking the forest, and a larger covered deck. *
Casa Canuck has an amazing combination of proximity, seclusion and complimentary conveniences that other rentals just don't have! Located in West End, on the water at Mangrove Bight, you have only a short walk to the lively center of West End, or to some of the best snorkeling in the world at Half Moon Bay. At home, you can unwind in the quiet and peaceful setting of a tropical oasis, watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, geckos, and other wildlife.
You will be able to relax in your suite or on your private deck overlooking the mangroves and jungle greenery. You can also enjoy direct water access or an evening under the stars on Mangrove Bight from our private dock, and even arrange to be picked up right from the dock for many water activities.
A one-minute walk gets you onto the newly paved West End road where you can find the many dive shops, fishing charters, dining options, shops and nightlife that unique West End offers. We are also ideally located for people looking for accomodations while completing dive courses. If you plan on diving, we highly recommend Jackson's Dive Center. Rino (pronounced Reeno) and crew run a good operation and are less than a block away. You can find them easily on the Internet.
We live upstairs full-time, so we are close by if you need anything, but we fully respect our guests' privacy. We are regular friendly people and would also enjoy sharing a visit and a beverage on the dock if you like!
During our time living here, we have learned about good restaurants, things to do, places to go and people that can help you with your Roatan vacation 'bucket list'. Let us know what you are interested in, and we will do our best to get you in contact with the right people.
Each of our two suites has a queen bed, full bath, private east-side deck, shared west-side deck, ceiling fans, cable TV, internet, 2-burner cooktop, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, water dispenser and drinking water, writing desk, bistro table and chairs and AC. There is a nice hammock and two adirondack chairs on your private deck, and night security on the property.
Our guests' comfort and relaxation is our main priority! We want your stay to be restful and easy, so we have thought of the little conveniences for you. Coffee? Salt and Pepper? Cold beverages in the fridge when you arrive? We thought of that! Flashlight? Umbrellas? Clothesline? We thought of that, too. Liquid Tide for hand washables? Hangers? Laundry basket? You bet. Scissors? Baggies? Can opener? Yes, even those! Wine glasses? Corkscrew? Candles? Definitely. There is an extra rod in the shower for hanging bathing suits, etc, free snorkel gear for you to borrow, free access to kayaks, and a local cell phone for you to use while you are here. Personal laundry can be arranged for $5 per load. 'Yes, we thought of that!' And if we didn't, please let us know!
AIRPORT / FERRY PICKUP: Let us know your arrival details and we will be at the airport or ferry to pick you up. We include a cold beer or soda or water (let us know your preference), a stop at the supermarket if you wish, and a comfortable short ride to Casa Canuck. Pickup and return is FREE for all of our guests.
We have a generator and live on-site, so you will still have a working water system and fridge (once we start the generator) if the power goes out.
We also have an additional single mattress for a third guest for an additional $25 per night.
Please, no smoking in or near the building. We love animals, but guests must not bring pets. We love children, too, but our suites are not suitable for youngsters. And if you enjoy other music besides the birds, the breeze, the boats and the seas, we ask that you keep your volume low. (Unless it is Salsa music, in which case you just need to invite us to the party!)
We are from Northern Alberta, Canada and have four sons from age 21 to 29. Joan is a teacher, and Stan is 'Stan the Duct Man' - our HVAC and plumbing company in Northern Alberta.
Joan Cooke and Stan Wall purchased this studio in 2012
In April of 2011, we came to Roatan for a single day during a cruise. There was just something about this beautiful little island that drew us back, and in April of 2012 we came for a week vacation, looked at a few places with a realtor 'just for fun', and somehow ended up owning this fantastic house in this amazing location. We moved here to our main house to stay in July of 2013, and will continue renting our studios.
The two best feature of our studios are the location and our free amenities! We are a very short walk from the best diving and snorkeling in the world, minutes from famous West End, but in a very quiet and private corner of the neighborhood. We have a mangrove and a dock on the east side of our yard, jungle to the south, a banana-filled yard to the west, and wonderful neighbors to the north. And 'We thought of that!' is how we describe our free extras.
We recently stayed 2 weeks with Joan and it was a wonderful holiday. The studio is comfortable and it is obvious they had have put a lot of thought into making your stay with them enjoyable and hassle free. Starting with the airport pick up and grocery stop as well as all the great information of restaurants and island attractions, it makes your holiday carefree.
We particularly enjoyed having a cocktail on the dock with the great breeze and lovely setting.
Joan made sure you felt welcome to accompany the girls on their morning snorkel and swim. She was always available for any questions you might have. We have stayed at a lot of VRBO and this was one of the best.
A great advantage is the location , close to town and beaches , no rental car necessary.
Loved the island and would definetly stay here again.
We just finishing staying at Casa Canuck in West End, Roatan, for 5 weeks. Stan and Joan picked us up at the airport which, when entering a new country, took alot of the unknown and nervousness away. They then proceeded to take us grocery shopping, explaining the various local items along with how the money exchange works. They also returned us to the airport on departure. This may seem insignificant but it meant alot to Penny and myself.
In our apartment we had everything one would need plus an information booklet with helpful places to go and things to do. There is a regular cleaning crew and a security guard on from 6pm until 6am every night. This is a quiet area of town. Snorkelling and swimming is less than 5 minutes away in beautiful Half Moon Bay.
As for Stan and Joan, they are terrific hosts ready to help you enjoy your stay at a moment's notice. They had known us for only 4 days and invited us and the other guests upstairs for a games night. Bob had mentioned that it was Penny's birthday, so Joan baked a cake and they all sang for her. How thoughtful she was!!
Our experience in Roatan and Casa Canuck has been absolutely amazing!! We look forward to visiting here again one day and returning "home" to Stan and Joan's place.
We arrived at Casa Canuck as guests, but left as friends.
Thank you, Thank you for a marvellous vacation. This survey only allows us to give you 5 stars, but in our eyes you're both 10 star rated!!
Taking the time to write this review is a joy! The small details that Stan & Joan look after make all the difference, especially travelling to a country that you may have never visited.
From the start, Stan met us with a big hug and a cold beer. Taking us to the local grocery story, answering questions about what we 'should' get (over what is already in the room), and showing us the sites from airport to Casa Canuck started our trip off on a very positive note!
Joan greeted us with another hug and showed us the highlights of the rooms: nice big shower with a large space to hang wet bathing suits, loads of towels and toilet paper, 2 keys with a mini flashlights...just some of the highlights that they thought of - more than just a place to rest your head after a long day of diving or snorkelling!
There is also a helpful book with tips and suggestions: what to do if the power goes out, island life and food, people to talk to or just say 'Hi'! This was extremely helpful. A quick poll around the dock one evening, revealed that our male counterparts didn't read the book, but I do suggest that someone read the thing! Please!
During our stay in Roatan we stayed at three different places and we can say with absolutely certainty that this was by far the best place. Location, supplies, great hosts who love to get together on Taco Tuesday with their 'charges', and a wealth of information that is second to none! We got a chance to compare notes with another couple who went to Costa Rica, and they wished they would have had even a fraction of what we had at their studio suite.
Our stay was way to short sadly, but we would go again and stay here - again! What a great way to discover this crazy little island!
Avril & Lance
After a long & tiring trip (Plane delay), we started our journey with a friendly & smiling face at the airport--Joan greeting us . She took us to the local grocery store where she assisted us with not only our food but with the local exchange rate. Arriving at Casa Canuck was a delightful surprise---the studio far exceeded our expectations...size & private deck with cooling sea breezes. The purpose of our visit was not only to vacation but to search for housing for a potential move to Roatan. Joan went above & beyond not only to ensure a great stay but assisting us in our quest for housing. She introduced us to her friends and local business owners. The booklet she provides in the unit provided us with great places to eat & visit (Monkey Island restaurant, Gumbalimba Park, rum cake factory & snorkeling locations). Most restaurants, beach & snorkeling were within a five minute walk from our room. Everyone we met was very friendly & willing to assist in anything we needed. Joan played a major role in not only making our stay memorable but making us feel like family. We highly recommend staying at Casa Canuck not only to enjoy the great scenery, the beach & stars at night from the private dock but to feel like home away from home. We look forward to returning very soon.
We are two females in our 30's and love central America but this was our first trip to Honduras. We were greeted by Stan at the airport who was so great and friendly! He took us to the grocery store and we were able to get coffee, cream, sugar, cereal, milk, sandwich meat, bread etc. we then get to Casa Canuck and it was better than we expected! Joan then came down and introduced herself and was an absolute doll! They have a book in the room that Joan has created giving reviews on anything and everything on the island. It was very helpful and we were able to pretty much try every single thing recommended in the book! We were able to do quite a bit of sightseeing including Little French Key, Gumbalimba Park, and West Bay beach. We highly recommend all three locations! They were amazing. Make sure you book Little French Key when there is only one cruise ship at port so it won't be crowded! Overall this was one of our best vacations! Joan and Stan were fabulous and the apartment is fantastic! Joan literally has thought of everything you could possibly need! I tried to challenge her and find something that she didn't have and I was unsuccessful! The walk into town is about two minutes or less. It was perfect! We don't have one negative thing to say about Casa Canuck or Roatan! It was seriously amazing and we would return! And when we do return we will book with Joan and Stan no doubt!!
i have been to casa canuck with a friend and totally fall in love with the place.. very clean and equipped with everything you need. private deck to relax. close to everything and quiet area.
Joan and Stan are the best host ever..very very helpful. they intruced us to many person and place they know on the island. they are always ready to help if you need something.
