Our desire is to create a country feeling in the middle of the city. Our 'urban farm' includes chickens, bees, a greenhouse and vegetable gardens along with beautiful seasonal flowers. Our friendly chocolate lab, Koko, will surely greet you as will Jeepers, our tuxedo cat. Not to worry, they are not allowed in the B&B area! You have the best of two worlds when staying at Gardenside B&B... your own private 710 square foot space (it really is ALL yours) where you can actually spread out and make yourself at home and at the same time have the opportunity to tap into the local attractions and offerings provided by your local hosts. How sweet is that?
Your hosts, Heather and Doug Johnson, are excited to share their home and love of alaska with you. Doug is the fourth generation of his family to live in Alaska. Doug's family came to this great land in 1898 to mine gold in nome. Heather, on the other hand, came from the tropics. A third generation kama'aina (local) from the Big Island of Hawaii, Heather came to Alaska in 1976 and immediately fell in love with the land and its people. Together they share a love of travel and adventure and have an appreciation for what travelers need.
Heather Johnson purchased this apartment in 1959
The Johnson family home was built in 1958. Doug was three years old when he moved from his 5th Avenue home to where we currently live on West 20th Avenue, which was then considered the boondocks and great moose hunting grounds. Our home was remodeled in 1998. After our children moved out to pursue their university studies, we decided to renovate a space for fellow travelers and officially formed Gardenside Bed and Breakfast in 2012.
Our spacious 710 sq. ft. executive suite has a cozy private bedroom and bath. Also, one can relax in a sitting room or take part in a meal at the dining room table.
We are within walking distance to downtown Anchorage and also are located in the quaintness of Spenard. Chester Creek is in our back yard, giving guests access to fabulous x-c ski trails in the winter and wonderful bike paths in the summer.
We left the RV behind and decided to backpack through Alaska utilizing the Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) and staying at B&B's. Our booking experience with Heather in Anchorage was straightforward and hassle free. We arrived at the airport and hired a car...................finding the Gardenside B&B was simple and we were greeted upon arrival by Heather. The B&B is the lower level of their suburban home. Access is from the street level carport via a set of external stairs to the accommodation. The large garden hosts chickens and bees; it is like a mini urban farm!
The B&B consists of a reception area, lounge/dining area and a separate bedroom. A second exit leads to the garden from the dining area via the storage/utility garage. The bicycles are stored in this storage area. Cycling around the city bike path to the park-lands near the back of the airport takes you through the earthquake memorial; a must do during your stay.
Heather and Doug were great hosts and they assisted us with some tour bookings in Denali - a big thank you!
Breakfast ingredients include the organic eggs and honey from the property - all very fresh and tasty! The location is quiet and we would say that, of the many B&B's that we stayed at in AK, the Gardenside was the best. We would highly recommend the Gardenside to visitors to Anchorage. We will certainly visit again.

This B&B was perfect for us, an older couple without transportation. The room was super comfortable, plus we had use of a private sitting/dining area. The breakfast is not a cooked one, but super-plenteous with all sorts of organic fruits and grain plus the advantage of being able to eat at any time. Without a car, we appreciated the fact that a bus stop was within a couple of blocks and restaurants were also close. We like to walk and managed to get all over Anchorage. Besides, Heather is a great hostess!!! Backyard is special, too!
Heather made us feel so at home with her delicious home made bake goods and well stocked kitchen which met all our needs. This lovely apartment was most comfortable for myself, my daughter and 8 year old grandson who especially enjoyed the spacious back yard with chickens to feed , a busy bee hive to observe and a wonderful ,friendly chocolate Lab to romp with. Fabulous collection of children and adult books , toys for any ages- all made for a wonderful stay in Anchorage. Bikes were also available for our use . Marvelous trails for hiking and biking were close by.
We were visiting my son, daughter in law and new granddaughter . It was a perfect place for us to hang out -close to downtown and family. I highly recommend a stay here if you are in Anchorage. You will not be disappointed. Hopefully our next visit will give us the opportunity to stay there again.
My husband, our 18yr old son, and I stayed at Gardenside from June 29 till July 3rd. The place is spacious, clean, and beautifully furnished. it faces the garden in the backyard, has a separate bedroom with a queen bed, a sofabed in the sitting area and of course a full bathroom. The frig was stocked with milk, juice, flavored yogurt, pastries, and hard boiled eggs (from their chickens). Also, fresh fruit, breads, Kona coffee and above all Honey from their bee hives. Heather recommended excellent hikes, site seeing cruises and fantastic places to eat. We also met her husband Doug and gathered around their fire pit and had marshmallows and a wonderful chat. Heather was always available for anything we needed and helpful in so many ways. Thank you for making our visit to Anchorage a memorable one.
The apartment was very clean and comfortable. the breakfast food was delicious. Heather was so very kind and generous helping us in planning our trip with her recommendations. Ate at Humpy's and the Moose Tooth while in Anchorage. Both had very good food and wait staff. Nice trail very close to VRBO
After our traintrip to Denali we arrived late in the evening. What a warm welcome in a beautiful house in a quiet neighbourhood of Anchorage. Plenty of space for just the two of us. Good bed and and big room for relaxing. We stayed just for one night but it is a great spot for staying more nights to explore Anchorage and surrounding. We read there are bicycles available so that gives a lot of oppertunaties for a relaxing time in Anchorage.
