About the property

Contemporary Studio Floor Plan In Quiet Neighborhood With Parking

This newly constructed guest house sits behind our 1915 bungalow in the Chestnut Hills neighborhood on Liberty Street, an historic street referenced in Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel. At just under 500 sq. ft, your retreat sits high among the trees with a private, lighted carport below. This is a very quiet spot in a beautiful residential neighborhood. Lovely views surround you, featuring Sunset Mountain, and turn-of-the century homes, one of which is the gorgeous Beaufort Inn. The space offers the perfect balance of bright and shady, with a modern, fresh finish, all new appliances including washer/dryer, a Zinus green queen mattress, quality linens (down-free, allergen free, etc.) and towels, thoughtful appointments, speedy wireless, HDTV with Roku including access to Netflix and Amazon Prime, a generous closet, and an efficient Euro-style kitchen space. Our goal is to provide comfort, privacy, and convenient access to everything that makes Asheville one of the top destinations in the US.

A bit more about Liberty Street, one of the oldest streets in Asheville. Only nine homes populate this neighborhood passage - an assortment of simple bungalows, Queen Annes, Victorian Farmhouses, and fine Arts & Crafts homes, all surrounded by ancient white oaks, spruce and sycamore. Ironically, one of the oldest streets in Asheville is nestled close to the freshest entrepreneurial hives in the city. Two blocks away is the Wellfit cycling and fitness studio, the Asheville Yoga Center, Elements (a natural food cafe) , and Liberty House Coffee & Cafe, all run by energetic and passionate people who love their neighborhood. One block west is the fabulous Plant Restaurant. Three blocks north on Charlotte Street sits Taco Temple, Gan Shan Station, Bone & Broth, City Bakery, The Chop Shop Butcher, and Metro Wines (they deliver!) It's a 12-minute walk downtown, verified many times while going to concerts or street fests, shopping, or to our favorite cocktail spot, Sovereign Remedies. For groceries, you'll find our major regional grocery chain Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's and Green Life (a small satellite of Whole Foods) are all just a few blocks away.

Update July 2017: Please note that the guest house is currently unavailable but will be available September 2018 (30 days or more).

About Tara and John Lochen

We moved to Asheville from Oakland, CA in 2004 and immediately fell in love with this leafy, historic stretch of Liberty Street. WNC Magazine (Storybook Cottage) did a nice piece on our home in 2013.

After watching our son grow up (the guest house sits on the site where he played basketball) and head for college, our thoughts turned to "projects", one of which is this amazing space built just behind our home. We're a work at home couple so you're never too far away from some local recommendations or tips. We will engage with you as little or as much as you like. And if you need something in addition to what is listed here, just ask. We're excited for you to stay here and happy to help in any way.

Why Tara and John Lochen chose Claxton Community

The guest house sits among some of the earliest built homes in Asheville, and while it's just a short walk to all the exciting options downtown, and on neighboring streets, we enjoy a quiet neighborhood with majestic oaks and wide brick sidewalks. The yard is also home to all manner of singing birds, squirrels and rabbits. It feels very much like a retreat. Once we decided to build the guest house, our goal was to honor the neighborhood, but with a modern spin. Abundant light, high ceilings, and beautiful windows were important to us in designing the space, and with the help of an outstanding local architect, we think we hit the mark!

What makes this guest house unique

You know what they say about location! In just a few short minutes you can walk to neighborhood coffee, yoga, cycling studio, acclaimed vegetarian fare, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Take a 15 minute walk downtown and enjoy top rated restaurants of every variety, award winning craft beer of course! Just a short drive to the River Arts District, Grove Park Inn or The Biltmore House. Breathtaking national forests, rivers and waterfalls are just outside town. When you are done with your adventures, return to your calming retreat and enjoy a quiet breeze and the mountain views.
