'On the Rocks', our mountain getaway, is located just southeast of Fort Davis on top of a scenic bluff overlooking beautiful Muzquiz Canyon and Mitre Peak of the Davis Mountains. There are porches on all four sides of the house, each with its own view of West Texas. We are less than 10 minutes from the history of Fort Davis, 25 minutes from the art galleries of Marfa, and 20 minutes from Alpine, making it easy to explore what makes each town unique. The master bedroom has a king bed with its own fireplace and bathroom. One guestroom has a king bed and the other a queen, each with their own bathroom. There is also a loft with two twin beds with access from the west bedroom.
Hardwood floors, cedar ceiling and non-mortared rock construction with a basement dug into the side of the bluff on which the house sits, make for a very comfortable stay throughout the year. Central a/c and heat were added early 2012, along with all new stainless appliances.
The house offers two fireplaces, both gas ignited, along with full amenities. Trophies of magnificent elk, audad sheep and deer adorn the walls. 360 views, porches at every bedroom.
If arriving late, please notify us by phone or email prior to arrival date since gate to property is locked after 10:00 pm.
The house was built by my father, Dr. Royce Read, in the mid 1980's as a second home away from Lufkin, Texas. He gifted it to me in 2012 and my husband and I have been updating it since. John and I live in San Antonio, Texas with our 2 children, Cuate and Ada. It is our hope that others can enjoy our west Texas hideaway as much as we do.
Stormie McEntire purchased this house in 1983
Our 2 families loved the house and property. Sunrise over the mountains was spectacular. Having 2 king beds was excellent for two families. Great location. Loved all the wildlife, especially the Javelinas! We will be back!
We have already begun to recommend this place to our friends. Our family had a lovely time, mostly relaxing on the great porch and searching for aoudads in the distant mountains. The house was equipped with everything we needed and the details of the interiors were quite charming - the hunters in our family were very impressed. For hikers and history buffs, we recommend visits to Fort Davis and the Chihuahuan Desert Institute. For astronomy lovers, attend a Star Party at the McDonald Observatory, only half an hour away. If you're traveling in the summer and need to cool off, we recommend Balmorhea Springs, also half an hour away. We can't wait to visit again!
The owners and property managers of this beautiful mountain home were spot-on! We were thrilled with our comfortable and beautiful accommodations. The views, the comfortable beds, the monogrammed towels. No detail goes unnoticed at this stunning spot.
We will definitely stay here again. We vacationed with our four teenagers. The location is wonderful - minutes from Ft. Davis. Drives to Marfa and Big Bend are reasonable. The house has a happy feel and there is plenty of room for a large family. The dining table seats 8! The kitchen & laundry are fully equipped. Bedrooms are cozy and comfortable. Our teens loved the loft area - but it wouldn't work for young children or older adults due to a steep ladder to the room. One thing to note - the road into the house would be difficult in a vehicle with low clearance. A 4-wheel drive would be best in rainy weather. And there is no wifi. That said, we had a lovely time cooking, sharing meals and playing Scrabble in this beautiful house! And the views were divine!
In the vicinity is Davis Mountain State Park, Big Bend National Park, and Balmoreah State Park lending access to most of what West Texas has to offer.
CAUTION: Due to drought there is a burn ban in effect, so please no open fires.
