Quaint, authentic 1850's vintage cottage in Galena's historic district. Less than 10 minute walk to downtown's many shops and restaurants.
A previous owner was a noted whiskey runner during the days of prohibition. Many of the cottages original features such as beautiful wood floors and clawfoot tub add to its charm. Enjoy your coffee on the screened in porch, or roast marshmellows over the campfire.
Cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, family room with electric fireplace and a comfortable front reading room.
Great place to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. The cottage is a perfect place to enjoy a laid back and relaxed weekend!
I have always loved Galena and its historic charm. My children and I have enjoyed the cottage and created many wonderful memories here especially over the holidays. I enjoy all the activities Galena has to offer, hiking, biking, kayaking and eating delicious food.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this cottage in 2002
Authentic and historic cottage that offers quests a comfortable and convenient home away from home. Cottage has a garage where you can park the car, and walk downtown.
Quaint, charming, in historic district, large wooded lot with portion fenced. Ample off street parking. Cottage brings you back to a simpler time, allows you to escape from your everyday routine.
The communication before our stay was pretty rough. We contacted the owner several times to try to get the address of the cottage and check-in info. I also contacted VRBO customer service, and they refused to give us the address because of "potential conflicts with current occupants." The owner responded 3 days before our stay to give us the address. This was inconvenient and stressful for us and for our travelling companions. She said she had computer trouble, so I want to give her the benefit of the doubt for that. However, it is essential to keep computer equipment functioning when running a vacation property through an online platform. An address is a very important piece of information to give guests in a timely manner.
The cottage is on the edge of town in very close proximity to the river and downtown areas. Very nice view, and we took several walks downtown. A+ for location.
We arrived at the cottage, and it was cute and cozy and as pictured in photos. There are 2 spacious, comfortable living areas. One of them has an electric fireplace and television with cable. The Wifi was strong and the password easily accessible, which was good for the one of us who was on call at work. There were NO BUGS inside. What a nice surprise in an old cottage!
Water temperature and pressure were good. The shower is in the clawfoot tub, and the shower curtain clings to you as is typical in this type of tub/shower setup. Great for baths, not the best for showers.
The kitchen was well stocked with basic staples and dishes and pots and pans. The gas stove works nicely. We were able to cook a really nice dinner.
There are 2 cute bedrooms with uncomfortable beds. The couple we were staying with described their bed as "squishy," and our bed was also kind of "squishy" and on an angled floor so that the head of the bed was angled very noticeably below the foot. We propped our heads up with 3 pillows each, and that was about right. All 4 of us slept poorly.
We had a nice time, but would not recommend this property.
The cottage is in a great location close to town. It was a cold weekend when we were there and the front bedroom remained cold at night despite putting the heat up to 78. The front reading room was not used since it was too cold. The front bedroom also had an uncomfortable bed. Otherwise we had a good stay.
We simply could not have asked for a better experience staying in this charming cottage. Meticulously maintained, we found no detail overlooked. Down to the door handles, the property’s antiquated appeal made you feel right at home in the 1800’s. It is everything a Bed and Breakfast aims to be, in terms of décor and personality, but with the convenience and privacy of your own home. And you could not beat the location. Steps away from all the hustle and bustle of Main Street, but with something many properties in Galena don’t have, an actual yard! You’d be surprised how stacked one-upon-the-other many properties in Galena are. I suppose it’s due to the nature of building in a hilly river town, but while this property is located right in the Historic District, it offers the private and peaceful serenity of a well place, and well sized lot. And it has a garage! Yet another modern convenience you will rarely find. We found the home to be clean and cozy, with a well-appointed kitchen even my gourmet husband could appreciate. We have rented many properties over the years and have dealt with every kind of agency and/or owner. I can honestly say that the owner of this property is by far the most pleasant, and accommodating person we have had the pleasure of doing business with. We will definitely be back!
My wife, two kids (10 & 7) and I had a very pleasant weekend stay at this cottage. Located on one of the major Galena roads, a short walk from downtown and 15 minutes from Chestnut Mountain, it was a refreshing break from look-alike hotel rooms and condos. The cottage was clean and spacious and easily could have slept six, though the single bathroom might then become an issue. The owner was very helpful and the listing fairly reflected the offering. The one issue we had was that there was a good amount of animal hair in the carpet (our 7 year old has some allergies) and the on-site vacuum cleaner was not up to the task. This is a great rental for someone who wants to be in town, wants basic amenities, and isn't looking for the oversized tub or TV screen.
Cottage is located within 10 minute walk of historic downtown Galena. Multiple golf courses, Chestnut Mountain Ski area, great restaurants and one of a kind shops all nearby. Biking tours available to Galena Winery. Weekend evenings feature Ghost Tours downtown.
