“This is a wonderful hidden away place. We had 15 people for my Dad's 60th bday and between the room below and the guest house above we had everyone in with no issues. Thyme was more than helpful and the house was more than anticipated. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. ”

Hawk's Nest Nirvana, a beautiful home set amongst redwood and oak trees has just been renovated for the 2017 season!!! New carpet, fresh paint, a new outdoor patio set and much more make this a fresh, inviting place to rejoice. Easy to excite with floor to ceiling windows and breathtaking views, this expansive home is inspired by Big Sur's Post Ranch and travels through Brazil and Thailand. An open floor plan with high ceilings, French doors, skylights and rap around deck, the home is ideal for most anything your imagination desires. The fireplaces and color scheme add to the romantic ambiance and with 3500 square feet, it's the ideal five bedroom escape from cookie cutter norm. A separated fifth bedroom feels like a second master and has it's own bathroom and path to the hot tub. A third master can be added for additional cost by including the guest CHALET located 150' from main house. This is only an extension to the rental of main home. Chalet includes a kitchen, bathroom, fireplace and wrap around deck. See pictures (23 & 24) The main house dining table seats 10-12 with additional seating at counter surrounding kitchen. There are both options of bench seating or cushioned wooden folding chairs, both comfy. The stainless kitchen and custom built-ins are great for cooking parties. Additional six person hot tub with two outdoor showers add to the experience. Hiking Garland Park, Point Lobos, wine tasting, world class golf, cycling and Monterey Bay Aquarium are just a some of the amenities within a few miles of this home. Indulge, live, love, eat and exercise! www.Refuge.com nearby for the ultimate in co-ed spa relaxation and rejuvenation. Massages, bikram, hot and cold plunges, meditation, ect ect ect. Then there's alway an eco ocean sea otter and whale adventure on Cptn. Lauren Henry's custom boat. A personal favorite on sunny days with sandwiches and wine! http://www.fastraft.com/contact.html
Please note there is a full time tenant in the second guest house on this property. Because of the unique design, it is unlikely you'll ever meet nor cross paths with the tenant, however it is imperative the garage breezeway never be blocked. Eight parking spaces have been provided for your stay: three on the left at green markers and five parallel parking tandem along cement retaining wall to garage. An EV charger is located just inside garage on left wall for your EV use if needed.

Thyme Lewis purchased this house in 2004
This unique feeling of Big Sur without the long drive. This property is ideal for those who wish to feel away, yet be close to all the action Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula have to offer. ATT Golf Championships, Concours de' Elegance Events, Laguna Seca, Pebble Beach Food & Wine, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Point Lobos, Nepenthe, Cafe Rustica, sightseeing, hiking on the property. We are in a dynamic micro climate rich with wildlife and very colorful vegetation feeling like Big Sur and Africa on this property. We are set against The Preserve which offers unlimited vistas and adventures.
The setting, the ease of access to everything, the delicious dinner parties, the warm sun on the mountain when downtown Carmel is fogged in, the star gazing from the hot tub or big rap around deck and a renovated Safeway just a few minutes away make this a great place to stay. Located next to Safeway, Jeffrey's Cafe is a personal favorite and has an always fresh, healthy, delicious menu for breakfast and lunch should you like to zip down the hill. Also Cafe Rustica in Carmel Village is outstanding for supper though seven miles further into Carmel Valley Village.
The owner, Thyme Lewis, was very organized with directions and instructions before we arrived at his beautiful house in the tree tops. The views are indeed stunning. The four bedrooms on the main floor and the bedroom suite under the house were perfect for our party of 9 adults and 6 small children (porta cribs for 3 of them and sleeping bags and couches for the older three). The kitchen was wonderful adjoining a great room and dining area - ample room for everyone to hang out in. It had just rained a lot so the outside was not conducive to deck time but in better weather, it would be wonderful with lots of seating and a hot tub.
Be prepared for a steep climb to the house and parking area, especially after the rain and in the dark, but once there, it was a magical setting. A few glitches were quickly addressed and we had a special reunion with all our family.
This property is one of the most amazing experiences we have had in our 40+ years of coming to Carmel. Firstly, to our gracious host: a huge thank you. The booking experience was simple, thorough, and informative. We had some questions that were answered and made us feel secure. This is an annual trip we take with our extended family so we hope for everything to be right. My elderly parents have specific needs and our young toddlers have other needs. All of these were addressed and proved to be true once we arrived. The property is as if someone plunked a beautiful, efficient, warm and cozy home in the middle of a forest mountaintop.
No shortage of blankets, fresh towels, fire wood, tp, glasses, kitchen wares; good working clothes washer and dryer, etc. TV and Inet are very strong with plenty of electronic oomph for the teenagers. The sprawling deck with incredible views and awesome fire pit was our favorite place to have breakfast and be with family. the giant family room inside with large table proved to be a very ideal spot for our long family games of cards. Our Charades game was perfect in the living room.
Time with family is a coveted time - we really only get to see each other once a year and the last thing we want to deal with is rental complications - for us there were none thanks to this gorgeous property
I am also a VRBO owner - so i know the time and care it takes to make sure guests are comfortable. it doesnt "just happen"
the owners obviously care. I read the prior reviews on this property. If you want to find something wrong with this place you will. But the same goes for the Ritz Carlton. Someone always complains about something. What can you do? In our case, this spot is perfect and hope to return.
PS The Challet is so cool - an experience on its own.
Thank you to Thyme and Hosts
Our family (13 of us) spent three days over Christmas at Thyme's Hawk's Nest Nirvana and we could not be more pleased. Upon arrival, we noticed how wonderfully secluded the house is, nestled amongst the tall oaks and thick forest in Carmel Valley.
The house was pretty chilly when we opened the front door but quickly heated up once we got the rustic fire stoves going...tons of wood for us to keep toasty for our entire stay (there are also smaller plug-in heaters in the rooms as well as an efficient a house heater). We cooked up a great Christmas Day meal in the very well laid out kitchen and loved the post meal food-coma around the fire. Woke up the next morning to frost on the patio and a quiet that was surreal...I could hear the flutter of the birds wings as they flew by, the chomping of nuts by a nearby squirrel, the calm of the beautiful morning...pretty cool.
Around you...there is a Safeway about 1.5 miles from the house along Carmel Valley Road as well as a larger retail mall about 10 miles to the west...Tablot's Wine tasting room is about 10 minutes to the east...Monterey is about 35 minutes away (went kayaking, cold but incredible).
All in all, my entire family thoroughly enjoyed Thyme's Hawk's Nest Nirvana and hope to come back during the summer to enjoy this great house (and location) during another season.
Thanks again Thyme for your graciousness and hospitality!
Hawk’s Nest shows beautifully in the pictures on VBRO. Some things proved to be as advertised – the location, views and deck. The rest of the experience was a huge disappointment and here’s why:
a. The carpet throughout is warn and stained/soiled.
b. Upholstery on couches and bedding are equally as soiled.
c. Lighting in the bedrooms is grossly inadequate
d. The first bedroom on the right doesn’t have any privacy/light block curtains
e. Dead toad in bathroom and there were more insects crawling and flying around than normal.
f. Way too much air freshener
The unfortunate thing about all if this is it makes you question the cleanliness of everything – do I want to walk around in bare feet, how clean is the bedding, are the dishes clean, etc.? To be fair, I am sure they were, but all of the above issues did not make for a good first impression.
Hawk's Nest is advertised as a 5 star property. As someone who has been fortunate enough to travel to many places in Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the US and stay at many 3 to 4 (and the occasional 5 star) star properties, this was the most disappointing property we have ever rented. I say this simply based on the condition of the interior of the home.
I have shared my concerns with the owner and found him to be very pleasant, but in denial. He has already told me he will challenge my review. So be it. If he is honest with himself he'll understand my concerns. It has the potential of being a great property, but is in need of a lot of attention. The sole purpose of my comments are that he will acknowledge the deficiencies and address them. Until that time I can not recommend this property.
I've never written an unfavorable review before, however, we were misled and in good conscience I feel I should respond to VBRO's request for review.
This was a perfect place for 6 adults. There was enough room where we never felt crowded at all. The house has a Frank Lloyd Wright feel to it as it blends into the natural landscape in a very cool way. It was easy to get to, great parking, and the owner was very easy to work with. When the hot water heater went out, he came out promptly and did not leave until the problem was resolved, which took up a large portion of his day and evening. He helped us with places to see, restaurants to eat at, and how to access beaches in the Big Sur area. Whenever we were at the house, we practically lived on the large deck overlooking the canyon...the house sits at the top of a canyon. There is a gas fire pit on the deck and plenty of chairs, so even at night it is comfortable. The back of the house is mostly glass to take advantage of the view, and the french doors open from the living / dining room and kitchen right out onto the patio. The kitchen was well-appointed and easy for many people to be in at once.
We used the 5th bedroom, which you have to walk down outside stairs to get to as it is below the house but still has a great view. We did not rent the separate housing unit which was above the regular house. It is difficult to get to, but for someone adventurous, I would highly recommend it as a super concealed hideaway for 1 or 2 people. It even has a rope swing that swings out into the woods...very cool.
This house is also only a few minutes to a Safeway, a liquor store, and several nice downscale restaurants...pizza, greek, meditteranean which were all good places, especially after paying the high rates to eat in Carmel and Monterey. The house also has good access to Carmel and Monterey, and the Big Sur coastline.
Came to stay at Thyme's place with some ladies to get out of the city and relax, and wow-this place did not disappoint! Not only is the house comfortable enough so that nobody was in each other's way, but the views and peaceful sounds were just what we needed. We all slept so well; every bed was so comfy! Waking up was easy, having coffee on the beautiful deck with views of nothing but tree tops and greenery. If you choose to stay in, cooking is a breeze, as Thyme has stocked the kitchen with anything you could possibly need. If you choose to go into town, it's only about a 10 minute drive into Carmel-by-the-Sea, but honestly, you may not want to. The only negative part of the house was leaving it! We could have stayed the rest of the month!!
